Preview: Scunthorpe vs. Millwall

THIS is a meeting of two sides who will be desperate for three points that could put a totally different gloss on their respective starts to the season.

A win for either side would leave the other with a record of three defeats from four games and talks of an unfolding mini-crisis.

Both were also knocked out of the League Cup in the first week of the season and, though that is hardly cause for deep concern, another defeat would darken the complexion of their respective seasons.

Millwall manager Neil Harris will want to halt a run of three consecutive defeats, and he’ll have to plan without both first-choice left-backs as Shane Ferguson is likely to join Joe Martin in missing this crunch fixture through injury.

That decision alone will require serious thought. Harris will have to decide whether to split the centre-back pairing of Sid Nelson and Tony Craig – which looked solid in open play against Barnsley, even if Millwall’s defence of set-pieces requires some work – and recall Byron Webster with Craig slotting in at left-back.

Jimmy Abdou adds more security to the Lions midfield but Shaun Williams was withdrawn against Barnsley after a lacklustre last two games and it is his position that could be under threat with the emergence of 19-year-old Ben Thompson.

Up front Lee Gregory and Steve Morison must rediscover the scoring touch that brought them three goals in the first two games of the season.

Meanwhile, Scunthorpe boss Mark Robins was quite frank in his assessment of how his side played in the 3-0 defeat to Wigan on Wednesday night.

He said: "We were beaten by the better side. We gave them, I think, too much space and certainly too much time on the ball. We were miles off – miles off it and miles off them.

"We played against a good side, we conceded early doors another penalty and we've gifted them a goal.

"It was a disappointing night and again it's one of those that we've got to take on the chin and learn from, and learn from quickly."

It’s a game after which neither manager will want to be repeating similar sentiments.

Sky Bet match odds:

Scunthorpe 7/5  Draw 23/10  Millwall 19/10

Probable Millwall team:

Forde; Cummings, Webster, Nelson, Craig; Onyedinma, Abdou, Williams, Upson; Gregory, Morison.

As long as Archer starts in goal we got a chance! Would be nice to keep a clean sheet along with a hopeful 3 points

    Mornong all.

Gone for 3-1 to us for some mad reason despite our form maybe just maybe, playing away will help us and by god we're owed a result (and Bomber) from these players. NAD's team prediction makes me smile regarding Williams' performances, competition for places ain't making him perform with Thompson up his a***.

Archer in for Fordey as well but you just know that ain't going happen!

COYL you owe us a result

@Millwallsteve1972: think you meant 1-3 but I recon you were right first time I'm afraid Steve. Prediction lively first 10 mins with wall bossing the game. Scunny break away goal then total collapse. Kids brought on late in second half and a conciliation goal 10 mins from time

I have a good idea about who should be playing left back.some on here are putting Romeo at LB ,i thought he was a right back,so if i am right then play romeo at RB and cumming's at LB,because against Barnsley Cumming's was so out of position at time's he was playing nearer LB than he was playing RB.

If Webster does play along side Nelson, then i hope sid will show his captaincy quality's that i think he most definetley has ,even though he is young i think he could help Webster.

If people on hear think the Forde is the reason for all our problems, then in my opinion you are deluded.

@NPEgentlemansclub: He is a Large part of our problem's,and as a goalkeeper the biggest part of our problem's,he is not the sole reason for result's that have gone against us over the past two season's,other player's like William's,Webster,Lack of goal's injury's are just a few more.
If you think Forde is and has been doing good over the past two season's or so,then you are the one who is deluded
The last two home game's are case's in point,Coventry caught way off his line, beaten at the near post, two goal's that should not have happened,Barnsley their winner Forde should have at least come and got a hand on that cross.
I say again you are the one that is deluded, and i can only conclude you know nothing about goal keeping, and before you ask yes i do know quite a bit about what it need's to be a good goalkeeper,
if you would like an in depth conversation about it i will only be to pleased to oblige.

@brooker: brooker if NPE is Jim Leighton, then as a goalkeeper himself he should know that Forde has become a little bit past it,and if we do not give archer his chance now [when our number 1 is making so many mistake's],it cannot be doing Archer's confidence any good in as much as NH is saying Forde is making a lot of mistake's but i still think he is better than you.

@jim1222: you alluded to knowing lots about being a keeper and your name is Jim I was just implying to NPE that you are Jim Leighton as he was the first "Jim" Goalkeeper that popped into my head :)

@jim1222: I am certainly not saying Forde is blameless, far from it. But just look at the rubbish he’s had in front of him. He has no confidence in our defence and his hesitation in making decisions means we are leaking goals. This team has far bigger problems than Forde. Yes put Archer in and give him a chance but for fu#ks sake sort the defence out first or we will destroy the poor guy.

@NPEgentlemansclub: He is a professional who is lacking at the moment and making big mistake's and has been for some time,if we are not going to give Archer his chance now ,when will we ?
In all seriousness if the other side take a shot from outside the box my and most of the fan's have their heart's in their mouth's.
To be fair i have posted that i thought Forde was the best shot stopper in the championship.
Commanding his area and dealing with shot's from outside the box are poor, and being a good shot stopper does not out weigh his failing's.
I do not want to be part of destroying anyone, but if Forde keep's getting second chance's and muck's up,then in my view he is destroying himself.

@NPEgentlemansclub: he isn't the reason for all our problems but he is definately one of the biggest. Did you not see the 3rd goal Tuesday?! Diving in slow motion to catch a ball that was never gonna clear Nyatanga that was floated in from around 50yards away and landed in his 6 yard box.
His command (lack of) of the area is one of the main reasons we consistently concede from set plays the last 3 seasons, the back 4 have absolutely no confidence in him when its a set play which is why we end up defending so deep.
The other main reason imo is Cummings. My god he is toilet. Ends up ball watching and marking Webster/Sid whoever is playing right cb leaving 2 men spare in acres of space with fred trying to cover him. He is no better than Hoyte was really, cant even kick a ball cleanly. Shows just how much we miss Carlos' ability and calmness on the ball.

Harris can't play Webster alongside Nelson coz there both right footed. So u either play Craig or beevers. Romeo is also right footed so u can't play him at left bk. I would play Keaton wood natural LB. abdou & Powell in midfield & AOB & Morison up front. Sorted c all u boys up there tomorrow coyl

@block 28: It must be time for a change?, to bring in the youth now, AOB with Moro and Fred behind, experience with youth, Thompson, Powell & Jimmy, Experience with youth, Back four Romeo, Nelson & Beevers, if we are paying Beevers wages then he should play, TC @ LB
Archer is a must for me, thought he looked good against Barnet,

Anyway how are you and have a good day tomorrow, 3pts hopefully .

Seriously find a replacement on the wing for fred
get Joe Martin and ferguson back, play a LB a LB put Ferguson on LW, PCH on the RW and put Fred up front with Moro instead of the part time electrician

@brooker: or attacking midfield, but i think he will be wasted out wide, get him more central and see the goals fly in.

@jim1222: I think fred is our best prospect and feel he can make a bigger impact in the game brought inside, if he has been having such a positive impact out wide, he will make things happen in the middle

No signings then? Thought they were on the horizon. This squad as it is will not make much progress. Another two defenders and a striker is essential.

I know its a change from 4-4-2 we wanted but that isn't working so we need to change it up a bit
I'd like to see 4-3-1-2 - if we need to drop back into 4-4-2 Fred can go back on the right or left.
Full backs can get forward to help attack and 1-2 midfielders drop back when Full backs are forward.
    Cummings/Edwards - Nelson - Craig - Ferguson
    Powel - Abdou - Thompson
    Onyedeinma
    Morison - O'Brien

we need a Plan B as we are currently playing kick and run

@brooker: I agree with your post but Ferguson is injured, it would be nice to see Carlos back, worried about lack of real height at CB, need at least one 6' plus CB, not Webster though! Hope NH signs someone

I'd give romero a go..he was playing for his country a couple months back, and havin a young player playing there would be better then a old or slow player at full back..beevers got done against Coventry cos of his lack of speed and Craig or Williams ain't gonna do no better there and will prob end up gettin sent off against a fast winger..
Forde (would prefer archer but bomber ain't gonna drop him)
    Cummings,Craig, Nelson,romero
    Fred,Jimmy,upson,Cowan hall
    Greggs morrison..
Don't like upson playin on the wing we alway have no width, and then wonder why teams who hold there width pass the ball around us..can we get a update on beevers??? Looks like he's going but I'm still hoping he don't...
