Millwall's Upson: We won't panic in bid to bounce back

Ed Upson is calling for calm heads as the Lions bid to recover from the 4-0 defeat to Coventry by making it two league wins from three tonight against Barnsley.

Upson also believes Millwall have to get used to playing against sides who attempt to outnumber them in midfield.

“I don’t think it’s going to help us if we start to panic,” he said “We’ve just got to stick together as a team and a club.

“We came in on Sunday to put a few things right. We want to put it behind us as quickly as possible.

“It totally ruins your weekend, it’s the same for the staff and the fans as well. We’re all in it together and we all feel the same pain.

“It was a culmination of things against Coventry. There were a couple of incidences that could have changed the game.

“They’re a good team but we have enough to be able to deal with that and we should have been better on the day. It’s how we deal with it and respond and prove ourselves to everyone really.

“They did have three in the middle. A lot of teams in this division play with five in midfield. We play 4-4-2 so it’s just something we have to learn to deal with.”

Upson felt there were some positives to take from the game, including the performance of Ben Thompson who made his league debut.

“Young Ben did well when he came on and there was more energy in the second half,” Upson admitted.

“The thing you can’t do is lie down and take it when you’re 3-0 down, you have to show that fighting spirit and try and come back from it no matter what.

“You can hear the fans’ frustration at the game and we can feel it out there but we’ve just got to deal with that, it’s part and parcel of football.

“If you don’t win games fans aren’t going to be happy and as soon as you do you’re all dancing together.

“We want to put right what went wrong at the weekend. We want to get a good reaction and get a good result.

“We’ve watched Barnsley and we know what they are all about, we know their style of play. But it’s going to be more about how we impose ourselves on them as the home team.

"We’ve got to make The Den a fortress and we’ve got to make our mark on them rather than worrying too much about what they’re going to do.

“With the greatest respect to them we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves more.”
