Report: Millwall 0-4 Coventry

COVENTRY did all the damage inside the first 24 minutes to inflict a devastating defeat on Millwall at The Den.

After Lee Gregory had missed a penalty just four minutes in, two goals from Adam Armstrong and a Ruben Lameiras strike put the Sky Blues three up at the break.

Jim O’Brien added a fourth with ten minutes left to make it an utterly depressing afternoon for Neil Harris’ side.

Coventry boss Tony Mowbray had spoken before the game about weathering an early Millwall storm before settling down to play a passing game, and that’s exactly how it turned out as his side made it two league wins in a row.

Millwall were simply much too naïve after Gregory’s penalty miss, handing the midfield initiative to the away side and they didn’t hesitate in taking maximum advantage.

Armstrong had given notice last week of the damage he can cause in behind defences with his pace, but Millwall seemed not to heed the evidence as they persisted with a high defensive line in the first half.

The Lions also looked like they didn’t know how to deal with Coventry’s formation, with James Maddison a really dangerous presence behind the on-loan Newcastle forward.

Millwall will have to consider their approach to the game, but will have little time to make the necessary improvements with Barnsley visiting The Den on Tuesday.

As expected Harris stuck with the side that won 2-1 at Shrewsbury last weekend and that decision looked like it was going to be immediately justified three minutes in.

Lee Martin picked up the ball in the inside left channel to feed Mark Beevers whose shot was spilled to the feet of Gregory by Coventry keeper Lee Burge.

There didn’t look to be much contact as Gregory went down, but referee Andy Woolmer didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot.

The striker went to the same side as he had last Saturday but this time, at a nice height, Burge palmed the ball away for a corner.

If Millwall fans were stirred by the bright start, that was as good as it got as they watched their side run ragged for most of the rest of the first half.

Coventry went ahead after just six minutes when Armstrong, such a quick and menacing player, picked up a loose ball 40 yards out and, spotting David Forde off his line, expertly chipped the keeper for his third goal in two league games.

The home side were desperately struggling to get to grips with Coventry’s slick midfield trio of John Fleck, Romain Vincelot and Maddison and when the latter engineered some space on the edge of the box on 19 minutes he played a sumptuous though ball to Lameiras.

The right winger had an ocean of space to cut back inside Beevers and he beat Forde at the near post to put his side two up.

If that was a bad goal to concede the third, on 24 minutes, was worse.

With Millwall keeping a high line, Lameiras delayed a pass to Armstrong before releasing the striker and the on-loan Newcastle youngster raced away unchallenged to lift the ball over Forde.

The closest Millwall came in response was a speculative Shaun Williams drive from 25 yards that scraped the outside of the post with Burge beaten.

Harris brought on Shane Ferguson and Ben Thompson for Beevers and Martin at the break and there was a marginal improvement at the start of the second half.

Still, Millwall created nothing clear-cut; Thompson’s shot was well saved by Burge before the midfielder found Morison in the box, but his volley didn’t have enough on it to trouble the keeper.

Harris introduced Paris Cowan-Hall with 14 minutes left but it was Coventry who added a fourth, Jim O’Brien finishing well after combining with Marcus Tudgay.

And Millwall’s misery was summed up three minutes from time when Gregory somehow contrived to miss after Morison’s cross had found him inches from the Coventry goal-line.

I have seen some poor Millwall sidesover the years but today was the worst I've seen. We have a squad of 24 of which 18 are simply not good enough. It's alright clearing out the poor performers from last season but not replacing them is simply suicide. In a nut, we had no hunger, no game plan and no decent players. What a total f****** disaster......

@eddielarge: Proper PONY.... We need a strong midfielder who can tackle and hold possession..... Woeful Upson and Willams are not strong enough.... Someone tell NH there's a player called Jack Powell on our books who bossed in the Carling Cup a year ago against Premier League Southhampton. It's not rocket science we are just playing every first teamer left from last year... That won't work.... p*** poor today only positive was Thompson looked good! @mewall62:

Beevers needs to start at centre back as he is not a left back and better than Craig and Webster. Craig had a shocker today but that was overshadowed by the worst centre back performance at the den in years by Webster. Cummings is a liability. Williams and upson must learn how to tackle. As for Gregory, I am running out of patience. He has played over 40 games now and has 5 goals that aren't penalties.

@MillwallChorister: Like you read my mind Chorister, Beevers is the best centre back at the club, Upson and Williams can't play together, we need someone, like Bailey when he was fit, to get amongst them. Gregory? Look at Armstrong for them, that's what a natural striker does. Only one who had a good game was Morison; he must wonder what he's let himself in for. Midfield was non existent.

Let's face it, we have not had any kind of solid defence for
the past three years. The amount of hammerings tells the story.
Lomas, the Clown and now Bomber, have not built from the defence upwards.
All the talk has been about forwards (and rightly so), but not much work
has gone into defenders - The Hoover and Edwards are the only quality we have had in that period.
Most of the rest have been a joke.
A top manager who knows what he is doing, will always start with a solid defence and
spew out hard earned results without conceding. I am sure Harris must be thinking this
way, but with no money, I am afraid he is up s*** strasse without his paddle.
It could be another long season ahead (I hope I am wrong), judging by the
way Barnet and Coventry easily sliced the defence up.

That ain't money by todays Football standards.
My point was, little has been spent on quality defenders,
three years worth of hammerings (mainly at the Den) proves that.
A p*** poor squad with only a handful of silver linings.

I have been repeating saying for 6 months that I don't think that Gregory is good enough .5 goals ( not including pens) in 43 appearances is just not good enough!! However he may actually be the answer to all one of our other problems. We should play him at Centre Back showed great potential today with a superb block on the line from Morissons shot and with his record in front of goal he is never going to score an OG !!!

    Come back soon Aiden !!

After 4 minutes I thought, lovely. 3 points. After 20 mins a pen missed and two goals down I despaired. Forde was caught way off his line which was an embarrassment for a keeper. Then beaten too easily at his near post. Every time Armstrong got the ball I was worried and quite rightly when he chipped it over Forde foe the third. We were dire today. Thompson did ok when he came on but hoof merchants at the back, nothing in midfield whcih puts a stamp on the game. We need a new Rae or Cahill. Upfront tried but again hoofing up to both of them is not what we want to see. Totally and utterly demoralised after that. If we had scored the pen it wouldn't have changed anything. Archer needs a start on Tuesday as Forde needs competition for his place. It's only the start so I won't write off my Millwall yet. Armstrong is potentially one foerthe future 4 in 2 now, which begs the question why aren't we shopping for loans in the prem youth???

What ive learnt is away from home playing dour players like martin and upson works. But at home you need to have creativity and abit of know how to break teams down. Cowan hall on the wing tuesday night with fred on the other side. Pace and skill to get the balls in the box then see what gregory and morrison can do. Ferguson needs to start aswell. Beevers centre half with craig and lets pray we get edwards back soon. Webster played well against shrewsbury but what ever happened today i am in shock. 1 step fowards then 1 back. Typical as usual

New season at home and the same s*** dished out. Forde you do yourself no favours. Supported you over the years, but must be dropped for thst display.
Bomber give us an honest assessment of that game and not with the spin that we have had in the past.
We were totally destroyed in that first half, and no one should be deluded to think that penalty would have changed anything other than us getting a goal.
It's going to be a long season!

Firstly, you're right southstand he is a bit odd.

As for today's match, de ja vu. I hoped we would win, expected us to lose but did not expect us to be as (for the sake of the do-gooders who question my allegiance to my football club if ever I post something that isn't blindly positive whatever the situation) as non-fantastically brilliant at they were today (hope that wasn't too negative). I'm off to catch my flight back to Spain to rejoin my family who I left there yesterday so I could watch my beloved lions today. The worst of it isn't over, - when I land she'll ask "how was the match?"

Ah well, at least wet sham lost at home today as well and the yids drew at home from 2-0 up. My hatred of those clubs and their fans and knowing they are not happy tempers my huge disappointment at today's performance (forget the result!)...the p e r f o r m a n c e ffs

After 3 nondescript seasons ,I base millwalls home form this season as to see where we end up. If we don't get anything out of the Barnsley game Tuesday , it's gonna be another hard road to endure,I still personally think it's not a great league with more poorer teams than good teams ,Coventry have done good business in Armstrong and Murphy ,being in this div you could see the hunger from our counterparts, what we all can't take is the damage limitation excersise rafter only 30 mins!!,Harris has got a lot to think about.

I've always been a fan of forde, and i was sure that after the off season break, he'd snap out of his dreadful form from last season. But enough is enough. Forde has to be dropped. Archer has shown what he is capable of, so it's not like our only backup keeper is bywater. Archer must be our number 1!!!

Forde - useless. What a shame to watch someone's career fall apart the way his has. Time for a really long break.
Cummings - not seen much from him tbh but again today was found wanting.
Webster - got torn a new one from Armstrong who in my opinion was head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch. Great little player.
Craig - slow, leaderless and flat footed was at useless today.
Beevers - nowhere near a left back. Not good enough and at fault for their second very bad positioning all half.
Fred - showed glimpses of what he can do but lacked a leader around him to guide him along. Shame.
Williams - shocking. Went missing all game. Weak.
Upson - nothing from him. Worthless runs and high balls which their CBs gobbled up for fun. Fred should play there all day.
Martin - don't know who I dislike more him or Forde. Just a pretty fancy dan who puts us under pressure everytime he gets the ball.
Gregory - ran his nuts off. Took and missed a terrible pen and missed the the easiest chance I can ever remember in all my 38 yrs.
Morison - offered little, got little.
Thompson - changed the game when he came on but at 3 down they just sat back and soaked it up.
Ferguson - was brought in for cover on the left, so why sit him on the bench.
Looked better than beevers but game already lost.
P C-H - pointless sub. Gave no different than most.
Management - is it fare to judge ? Not sure. Give the man some money to spend and let him spend it. 3rd biggest budget in the league ? Then prove it.
Thought today's performance was actually worse than I witnessed all last season.

But apart from Fred, it is a very similar looking group to last season.

    My team going forward

    Archer

    Cummings Craig nelson and Ferguson

Powell abdou when fit, Paris and Fred

    Morison and Gregory.

At least if they are as bad as the pile of s**** out there today they would have an excuse.

Well fellow Millwall supporters. Lets be fair first half totally torn apart by Coventry. We wre a shambles all over the park defence to slow midfield overrun and forward line only Morison is worthy of any praise. One again another season of lack of investment in the team spells disaster. I just hope their are worse teams than us in this league or we will be fighting relegation again. I will give Bomber 10 games and e will be calling for his head. Does not matter if you have Lomas, Coco or Morinho if you do nit invest in qualty players you are doomed. Furst game at home and it was pretty dire. Unfortunately the wrting is on the wall this squad if players are not good enough and our manager does not have the money or the experience. KJ is a god what he did at our club on a shoestring now at Wolves he has an open cheque book and look our far they have come from when he took over money talks. JB please wake up and smell the coffee before it's to late. No mote ad beens or past Millwall players KJ outed TC has not good enough now his back. I've just got back from the den , who tells players to lump a ball right down the middle for asix foot six centre half to mop up all afternoon , players not playing possition football from the back webster he's no more to blame than Craig less if any, forde got no confidence at all . I actually though Coventry were an excellent side played football very well pass and move good player's on the ball and obviously listen to there wildly old manager they will be there and there about playing like that . Has Harris got the ability toget this lot going?

I'm going to get slate for this but before I I'd like to say that I'm not calling for heads to roll.

The opening half screamed of managerial and tactical naivety. Playing 442 with 2 out and out wingers and strikers and no pacey full backs to counter their pace and counterattacks was rookie. That was clear from the second half when Upson was pushed out wide and we improved (albeit slightly).

Forde had a mare! being caught off your line from an awful centre of the goal shot is poor. Distribution was woeful.

Beevers is not a LB so I cant blame him wholly but we need pace at the back Ferguson helped with that and Cummings is suspect. I think TC needs a pacey partner and I'd put Nelson in.

We miss Abdou's hustle in the middle of the park he stops that first goal IMO.

We were really poor at times and ran out of ideas which was a shame so early in the season.

'we practice penalties' really? 2 misses out of 3 is poor and I've seen Gregory miss before at charlton (very similar penalty)

That being said I'm looking for positives. Fred Onyendinma is a top prospect and we need to tie him down to a long deal with a big release clause. I think Morison and Gregory will still score goals in this league there was a disconnect with the midfield and them today. Ben Thompson looked lively coming on as well. We have some real gems in our youth team. Its early days onwards and upwards. I Harris I believe! COYL, NOLU, MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Millwall do not have the players to play a high defensive line, the defenders do not have the pace and the midfield does not exercise enough control. And no one seems to be organised.
So NH either makes wholesale changes to personnel or changes tactics to use what he has and plays to their strengths - although it is more a case of avoiding their weaknesses.
I hope and expect NH will make the grade as a manager, but in the short term some seasoned cover might help him succeed. This may not be popular but what about Big Sam as a "consultant"?
The struggles of Lomas, the cretin Hollowhead and now NH together show what a star was KJ.

We are a mid-table team at best, we're not a bad side as Shrewsbury proved but we have been exposed today and it will happen again. It will take a while for the youngsters to impose themselves but the likes of Forde, Cummings and Webster need to take a very long look at themselves. Also, Williams needs to be dropped to give him a kick up the a**e, had zero interest in getting involved. Jimmy coming back will help, as will the return of Carlos. Would like to see Beevers back in the middle of defence with Ferguson getting a run as left back, we might steady the ship

Harris may have been the Manager when we got relegated but the damage had allready been done by the clown I know I will probably get a few dislikes but the big feller Shittu could have done a job in this Div he would have frightened the life out of that little forward unlike Webster runs like a nodding dog when under pressure I left the game early yesterday day thru pure embarrassement I will go Tuesday night because we can't play like that again surely felt sorry for Morrison what you meant to do if your feeding on scraps we also need a leader Bailey type there must be someone out there . Two games in Will judge this Team after six. And please give Harris some help Mr chairman before we get into the same predicament as last two years . Harris needs a older head to talk to what ever happened to the coppell rumour or give Mr George Graham a ring to sort out the defence

Biggest Regret letting go of Shittu but I reckon he will do though we need Carlos Edwards back aswell as Jimmy Abdou and Obrien as soon they recover we be out in no time. By the look of things it seems is going slowly. Await the outcome for next Tuesday we will bounce back after that 4 goal heavy defeat
