Ed Upson: Promotion experience will aid Millwall's chances

ED Upson believes prior promotion experience will be of help to Millwall next season.

The 25-year-old is one of a number of players in the Lion’s ranks who have the honour of winning promotion from League One.

Upson played alongside Byron Webster in the Yeovil team to triumph in the League One play-off final in 2013.

Tony Craig, David Forde and Jimmy Abdou, as well as manager Neil Harris and coach Andy Frampton have also won promotion to the Championship with Millwall back in 2010.

And Upson feels the collective experience from players who have made it out of England’s third tier will bring the necessary knowledge to mount a promotion challenge next season.

"Hopefully we can help,” Upson said. “We’ve got the experience of getting promoted from this league. Anything we can pass on to the rest of the team will be helpful.

“When Byron and I were at Yeovil and got promoted, we had other lads who were in the league before and had gone up and it helped us.

"I've got to take on that responsibility, being one of the more senior players, albeit at a relatively young age. It's something I've got to take on as we have quite a young squad.”

Each season, Upson writes down his aims for the campaign in a book and keeps them to himself. This year the midfielder admitted one of his aims is to score more goals after netting twice last season.

After the constant changes in team personnel under former boss Ian Holloway, the midfielder feels this season, a more settled side is needed to yield the desired results.

"One of my targets is to score more goals,” Upson explained. “I've written down other targets that I keep to myself but I do want to score more goals.

"A big part of that will hopefully be playing more games.

"Last year the team was chopped and changed every game so it was difficult to get a run going and build up some confidence.

“This season, it will hopefully be a settled side. Then we can put a run together, build up some confidence and play some good football."

We need all the midfield to write that down in there book, I know cocco chopped & changed but that's not the only reason we didn't score more goals from midfield. Even when Harris came in the players would pass instead of having a shot. You was scared of getting a bollicking from the crowd the midfield need to grow a pair & don't worry about us. Coz score or not we appreciate the fact that you had a shot in the first place coyl.
