Millwall boss wants four new signings before Portugal trip

MILLWALL boss Neil Harris expects to have two new signings on board for the club’s first pre-season training session on Thursday.

Harris has prioritised bringing in a keeper, left-back and striker, but the Lions boss stressed the need for patience as transfer negotiations continue.

Millwall held talks with Brentford centre-back Alfie Mawson last week and the club have been determinedly pursuing Bradford City target man James Hanson.

Harris also hopes to add at least two more players before the squad go to their training camp in Portugal on July 5.

He says he is satisfied with how the squad rebuilding work is going.

“I’m delighted. We looked at the mainstays of the team and wanted to keep them with us, which we’ve done. We let a lot of players go because we had one hell of a big squad. We’re looking to add a few more to what we’ve got.

“All the players that we wanted to sign new contracts have done that. A couple of early additions will hopefully be with us on Thursday. We might get over the line with them on Tuesday or Wednesday so hopefully they’ll be with us for the first pre-season session.

“There are a couple of other targets that we’ve had to be patient with, we have to sit tight and hopefully have them with us before we go to Portugal.

“We’re looking to get in good solid pros, players at good ages. We’re looking at some players who’ve played at the level we’re at and want to push on to the next level, and in some cases we’re looking at young players.

“We’d love to get them involved in the group as soon as possible but we’ve had to be patient, that’s football.”

Jordan Archer, who was released by Tottenham this month, is another player who has been linked after he spent part of last season on loan with the Lions.

Harris also expects a left-back to join the squad before Thursday and dropped a hint that the departure of David Forde is not a foregone conclusion.

“We’re looking for somebody to come in and push Fordey for the number one position,” he said. “We’re certainly looking to add another striker. We need four and we’ve currently got three options at the moment. I’d like to have someone who offers something different from those three we’ve got.

“Left-back is a position we want to fill this week. In the modern day you want athletic full-backs who can get up and down and someone who has real quality on the ball.”

@gman: Yeah, I thought that too. Obviously not. Just a question of being patient I suppose. It's going to be a long summer...

@gman: I think Martin is seen as back up, not necessarily first choice of the 2 left backs NH would like. The last Millwall manager with this '2 players per position' philosophy was Rhino/Macca back in 98 and it helped lay the foundation of one of our best ever squads, but it took 3 seasons so we're going to need to be patient about a lot more than this Summer's signings I reckon.

If we're looking for someone else who is different from the three strikers we have, we are we not looking for a forward with pace. We're not exactly blessed with pace upfront and has been something we've lacked for ages. Someone pacy who could play on the shoulder of the centre halves and run onto passes from Williams and Upson is exactly what we need.

@jacktk: Although I agree with you, I do think Gregory will do very well next season with what you are saying. Playing on the shoulders of the centre halves and running onto through balls etc. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does next season.

Not bothered if we don't get Joe Martin (Personally, I don't rate him what I've seen and heard); Mawson, Archer and Hanson (or A N Other target man) would be good to get on board - come on chaps, free trip to Portugal, I know a really good bar in Vilamoura!!

Thats not the way i've heard Martin described, having never seen him play i can't comment but no one else has been linked in that position?

It will be Archer and TONY CRAIG - Wall can't get rid of Fordee so he will be our No 1 next year - so same old story nothing changes. Fordee will be here for another 2 seasons. Perhaps AA has got a discount on their hotel having just been there - great a jolly to Portugal THEY SHOULD ALL GO ON A 3 WEEK COMANDO TRAINING PROGRAMME AT LYMPSTONE - jollies in Portugal I ask you and you think I am mad. Alright for some. End of ROLL ON CREWE AT HOME.

Don't want to be negative but heard a rumour that Alfie Mawson is going to sign for Oxford United. Apparently he wants to play a midfield role rather being a defender. Hope it's wrong.

@mfcjake: Oxford Utd, do me a favour. If that's the level of his ambition he can stroll on.

The Squad Neil has is going to be hungry for every game and that means they are all going out to win every game possible on every blade of grass they step on...believe me or should I say Neil, he has the best youngster this club have had for a long time, we might be in division one, but a good start for this group of players to gel together ,watch them ,once they are in the starting line-up they will not want to lose there place.
After the gloom of last season, this season looks exciting.!!!!!!

"Jordan Archer, who was released by Tottenham this month" Harris said on Lionsword yesterday we had to work very hard to persuade Tottenham to let him go.
