Southend make loan approach for Millwall keeper Mildenhall

MILLWALL goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall could be making a return to former club Southend United after the two clubs opened talks about a loan deal.

But the Shrimpers cannot afford to pay for all of Mildenhall's wages and so would need the Lions to contribute a percentage each week.

Reports in Essex on Monday morning claimed the Shrimpers' first offer was rejected but negotiations are likely to continue. The two clubs meet in a pre-season friendly at Roots Hall tomorrow evening.

Mildenhall is on the transfer list at The Den and boss Kenny Jackett would ideally arrange a permanent exit for the 33-year-old.

But so far Preston are the only other club to make an approach for him and that was also with a view to a loan switch. The South London Press reported last week that the shot-stopper rejected the chance to move to Lancashire despite spending a day on trial with the club.

A return to Southend, for whom Mildenhall made 89 appearances between 2008 and 2010, remains the most likely outcome.
