Millwall manager Harris outlines pre-season arrangements

NEIL Harris has said more of the academy starlets will get their chance ahead of a return to pre-season.

The Lions come back off their summer break in two weeks and Harris has said the first team, along with some of the U21 players, will be taken to a training camp in Portugal.

And Harris added that the young players who don't travel will have a chance to impress when they return to Calmont Road.

“We’re going to have ten days at the training ground where we will work physically with three sessions a day," Harris said.

“Then we will go over to Portugal to do similar, but in an environment where they're living together and spending twenty-four-seven together as a group to build a spirit and a bond between themselves.

“Some of the young lads will get a chance to go. The first team players will go, some of the U21 players, too.

"When they come back they will get an opportunity and, throughout next season, they will be in and around the first team.

“Some will get an opportunity to go to the pre-season camp, some will get a chance when we get back to play a part in first-team games."

Harris also dispelled rumours of a lack of spirit last season, and reiterated his plan for a smaller squad to help limit any frustrations that might develop with players being left out.

“I wouldn't say there was as spirit lacking last season," Harris added. "But I think that, sometimes with a big squad, it brings disharmony at times.

"Everybody wants to play, so it becomes difficult to manage a big group.

“If players aren't in the team they can get frustrated.

"At Millwall, you've got to have a team spirit and a bond within the group to be successful.”

Are we likely to have any new faces/signings plus others finally tied down by then to take away with the group I we're looking to build team spirit?

We need no more than a 28 man squad last year was 45 including loans, no wonder we went down.

Forde will be a Fulham player by Friday so expect the next news to be the signing of a goalkeeper.

I hope this trip to Portugal will produce better results than the last two. No news of Fred extending his contract yet? We still need another striker as well as a goalkeeper.

@junkmale: we loaned archer from spurs till end of season and now his spurs contract has expired. However as he is under 24 spurs would be owed compensation so I assume we will try and negotiate a sensible deal

@sadlier89: the thing about archer is that he looks tied of waiting to make a decision on his status at the club..he couldn't even get in eire ' s side and they used 2 keepers

@Jim28: a young keeper like archer is what we need. To grow as the team grows

Not a great fan of these Portugal trips would rather see them get ready for L1 in a tougher environment. Places like Ireland Scotland or Russia now that would test there team spirit.

Totally agree. A team spirit will be vital next season with all those long journeys up north. The Scottish prem bar Celtic and Hearts is about the same standard as league 1 I'd say so would have been ideal.@block 28:

Better to train in warm conditions than some rain soaked windy s.hit hole, less chance of injury and you get the opportunity to get more important work done. It wouldn't of matterd where we trained under IH but hopefully under bomber things will be different.

@LETEMCOME: The thing is those exact lousy weather conditions you described are exactly the ones we shall be playing in. Not the glorious weather of Portugal.

@potty1: @potty1: oh yeah I forgot that we have s.hit weather in the country that I've lived in all my life. It was stupid of me to want our players to train somewhere warm and sunny to prevent injury and be able to work on set pieces without being intruped by the weather that I did not realise exists. Think about it you mug or are you an anroak in disguise.
