Millwall boss optimistic striker Marquis will sign a new deal

NEIL Harris is optimistic out-of-contract striker John Marquis will sign a new deal with the club.

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh had declared his interest in securing the permanent services of the 22-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the Kent club.

Marquis scored ten goals in 21 appearances during a successful loan spell.

And Harris has said the offer to Marquis is there and conclusions to contract talks can take their time.

“John’s been offered a contract and it's ongoing,” Harris said. “It’s the same situation with Jimmy Abdou.

“The offers have only just been made and what tends to happen is; the offers get made, then the advisor goes back and talks to the player.

“Then the player wants to talk to his family so it tends to take a week or two to pan out but we’re certainly hopeful both players want to commit to the club.”

I can't see Jimmy will have that many choices, but Marquis has, and after the treatment he had at Millwall, wouldn't be surprised to see him go. I was never a fan, but he must have something that Gillingham and Bomber like.

@beedoscores: I think it's the fact that john will score goals in div 1,as he has proved with the Gils but gregs will also do well in div I,so will john want to sit on the bench again baring in mind of the recent gregs and obrien partnership.

@DANGEROUS: If you have to choose between Gregory and Marquis then you have to pick Marquis. Gregory has proven that he is not Championship quality and we must remember that he is not young. He will be 27 at the start of next season and Marquis will be 23 and at least has the potential to improve. We need to build a team that can compete in the Championship . We know that Gregory is not up to it and may be no better in League 1 . We at least know that JM scores in League 1 and may develop into a Championship striker.

@Kinet: why all this talk about the championship? What we actually need is a team able to compete in league 1!

Greg managed 9 goals in his first season not playing in non league for a team with no goals in it. Not actually that bad considering and he was starting to look much sharper for the spell under bomber no doubt helped by having a strike partner! Also he spent months sat on the bench as part of Ollies inspired tactics.

Expecting 15-20 next season from minimum.

Marquis is not better and I can only imagine he's being considered as a backup striker to cover injury. Personally would have that philpot as cover for Greg or obrien, 1 touch 1 goal, doubt even messi managed that!

@MFC Lion: yes and out of Gregory and Marquis only one has proved himself at League 1 level . Gregory played over 41 games last year starting more than 30 he got 6 goals from open play !!! 3 penalties with 75% success rate . What strikes me is all the absolute sitters he missed , poor control when in great position and the missed one on ones. All strikers miss opportunities and he will improve but he is no spring chicken . If you had to buy one surely a 22 year old who has scored 1 in 2 games in League 1 rather than a striker who will be 27 next season and has a better than 1 in 2 in NON LEAGUE football

@LionforLife: Don't get me wrong I don't think Marquis is going to be a world beater but at 22 he has more chance than a 27 year old Gregory. Marquis has got 23 goals in 65 games on loan as real youngster which ain't bad and maybe he just needed to mature physically like Harry Kane to come into his own. There will no doubt be some improvement in Gregory but there could be a lot in Marquis and I would hate to see another Grabban a multi million striker who we let go because he was not good enough when he was younger.

Hope we keep both of them, they both bring something different and unique to the squad, and both know what playing for Millwall is all about. I will say today that I believe JM has the potential to score 20 goals next season if he avoids injury.

@glyngo: Both very hard working, no one is gonna be playin every game, o'brien can barely pick he's feet up towards the end of games, JM perfect to come on and close games out. Lookin forward to seein what forward we bring in cos we clearly need one.

If anyone knows marquis it's Harris. He knows what he wants and if he didn't there would be no contract offer. So for that reason I hope he signs

Its horses for courses. Marquis has better hold up play, wins a bit in the air and has strength. Gregory and O'brien are of a similar mould. It would be nice to be able to swap between them three and let them grow their understandings of eachother. But at the same time we need a fast greedy power house who will score 15+.

If Marquis re signs i hope Harris can get the best out of him,but i worry Millwall are going for the cheap and easy option as usual!I would be very disappointed if we don't recruit another established striker.

The championship was a step too far for John at the present but back in league 1 he will do a job for us
always gives 100% and at the Gills he has proved he has goals in him...give him ago he deserves a chance which is something we havnt really given him,

I dont see it myself, but Harris must as he knows how he wants to play and set the team up. But in this division i agree with some posts on here, we need some 'bullies' in the team, i really think Webster should be given a run, i know young Nelson has come on leaps, but we have got to start the season strong and on the front foot. We have the nucleus in the squad, we just need a few experienced,( but not passed their sell by date), 'winners' to bring our younger players on. just my opinion!

I think this is a massive backward step. I hope we show a bit more ambition with the rest of our summer signings.

Marquis would only be on the bench for us but at Gillingham he will get more first team starts. Better for his own professional development to stay there. I would rather us go and re-sign Jon Obika up. We know he is effective as L1 level and now he look quicker stronger and more powerful going by last nights game, also suppose to be a very nice respectful lad to boot.

Early days I know - but I am already starting to become disolusioned - low cost options or what.
As someone has already said - retrograde step. If we are honest with him (- we should be looking for better) - the best he should hope for is sub - in which case he would be better off with the Gills.
We have released better players in the last week or so.
It will be very very difficult in Div 1 - the sooner we wake up to that the better.

I think the best thing to happen is for Marquis to sign for a further two years at our club and go back out on loan for the first half of the season, gaining some confidence. Hopefully he'll come good and we can sell him for a decent amount. However I think he's done well this season because he's trying to impress a new manager and convince him to a new move away from The Den.
In hindsight he should have gone out on loan sooner so we could try and get some money for him instead of (probably) being released on a free transfer.

we need a strong, quick, hungry striker with lots of stamina... Personally I don't think marquis matches them orders, but on the other hand he can obviously put the ball in the back of the net as he as proven at Gillingham...
