Gillingham boss hopeful of signing Millwall striker Marquis

GILLINGHAM manager Justin Edinburgh is hopeful of signing out-of-contract Millwall striker John Marquis on a permanent basis.

Marquis’s contract expires in June but he has been offered terms on a new deal at The Den.

The 22-year-old scored ten times in 21 appearances for the League One club during the second half of last season.

And Edinburgh is keen to add Marquis permanently to his side this summer after a successful loan spell.

Speaking to his club's official website, Edinburgh said: “John’s contract expires at the end of the season and over the next couple of weeks we will have a greater idea of the situation.

“But John loved his time here and having spoken to him he wants to come back here and we want him here so we are hopeful something will happen.”

“Millwall has been the club that has given him an opportunity but I perhaps feel that he think it’s a realistic one here and he’s had a real good go at it.

“He’s found some form, he’s taken to the club and feels part of the team.

“Until deals are concluded there are always opportunities of it not being successful.”

To be honest can't see him coming back to the den unless he wants to go back to the subs bench gillingham offering him 1st team football week in and out. Can't see they he would want to turn that down. Good player don't get me wrong just never has shined for us

Would you play him in the first team in front of Gregory or O'Brien... No, me neither. I think that answers it.
We need a striker, but better than what we've got, forcing Gregory and O'Brien to play for their place.
We need to make a new striker the top priority, and it has to be someone proven at this level and in form, may have to be a record signing. We've already got the up and coming youngster, and we've already got the gamble that may pay off, we now need in form proven quality to complete our front line and Harris given the realistic means to acquire it.

Do we get any money for him? I know our situation has changed, but I think Marquis coming back here would be a backward step for Millwall. He might have scored goals for Gillingham, but if we want to get promoted from League One we need to start setting our standards much higher.

If hes got 10 goes in 21 games, the i don't think we should sign him back up. If he can do that, what kind of return that Greggs, Obrien, etc get us

He spent a lot of time on the Gills. bench after his brief purple patch,i think we should be looking for better players if we are aiming for promotion.Marquis's relationship with Harris may have some bearing on his decision aswell as who is a offering what.Although he is out of contract are we entitled to compo because of his age?

Gregory, o'brien, marquis, and push the boat out on bringing another one in. I'd be satisfied with that, regards marquis last time I see him in millwall shirt @ Norwich he put a proper millwall shift in and was only one that day that I think could be satisfied with he's performance ! So get lost gillingham !

he was also very good in the cup game against Southampton at the den.. Scored against villa... Would cost us nothing apart from a contract... We are a div one club now and not many strikers will come to us unless we break the bank for Matt smith

@dinsdale: I agree mate, o'brien & greggs need competition for places up front & with only his wages to sort out, we should be looking to get him back and build a good young squad, an earlier post said he'd prefer starting at gillingham but he didn't always start for them so is used to squad rotation

@dinsdale: Exactly, nothin to lose with marquis, matt smith is the one in my mind also but maybe bit expensive, cheaper version of him or get him on loan for whole season with a view to a perm signing

He's had the contract offer from us but hasn't signed. If Harris is demanding 100% commitment then there's no way he's coming to the Den now. Just as well, we've got better forwards already and there's still one or two to come in.

I think with the two youngsters we already have we need a proven goal scorer to add to the squad Good luck to the lad its a shame that it never really worked out for him .

He's been offered a contract and still hasn't signed, so that says it all really. I know he's a Millwall man at heart but I don't think we'll wait too much longer for him to make his mind up especially if we've got our eye on other better forwards.

If marquis goes to me it shows we can't keep our players. And without forward cover we could easy be the wrong side of the league one table marquis for me is well worth keeping enougher option who can add goals

We have been a Div 1 Team for the last 2 or 3 years.. for me Marquis is a Millwall player and this is now his time to show us his potential. We've shunned our youth in favour of the wage theif donkeys who have hardly scored a goal between them but now Harris has forged a new Youth / Academy based strategy.
With Marquis, Gregory and O'Brien we have 3 decent young strikers hopefully getting good service from Fred and Cowan-Hall. Lets see where we are at Xmas and take stock of the squad v position in the table.
    COY(young)L !!!

not sure why we would offer a team in our division our home grown plYers, we gave him a contract in the championship so why not league 1where he is better suited

The Millwall style under Chopper suits Marquis and if Chopper wants him thats good enough for me.....the problem hes got is the rubbish comments from a few fans......Gills fans love him.......come back John and show them what you can do

let him go, he had a little run then as before here went off the boil.

Rather sign Curetton to support the young ones.

To me, he is one of 'those' players.
They have purple patches, then go off the boil for games/months at a time.
The initial enthusiasm of first team football disappears and makes way
for an orgasmic ninety minute dream about chillies in Nando's.

To be fair, from his point of view, he may well see Millwall as possibly a lot
of bench warming and fancies his chances more with the travellers.
Jury out for me at the moment.
