18 players released by Millwall as Harris clears the decks

MILLWALL have released 18 players following their relegation to League One – including long-serving captain Alan Dunne.

Of the club's 20 out-of-contract players, only Jimmy Abdou and John Marquis have been offered new deals.

From the first-team squad, Dunne, Nicky Bailey, Matthew Briggs, Richard Chaplow, Carlos Edwards, Ricardo Fuller, Magaye Gueye, Justin Hoyte, Stefan Maierhofer, Angel Martinez, Danny Shittu and Martyn Woolford have been let go.

Edwards, who has been sidelined since last September with a horrific knee injury, has been invited to complete his rehabilitation with the Lions.

Youngsters Dylan Casey, Sofiane El-Bekri, Denzel Gerrar, Jake Goodman, Josh Siafa and Callum Webb will also be moving on to pastures new.

Dunne's association with the club has come to an end after 22 years and 338 appearances.

Chairman John Berylson told the club's official site: "It is always sad when a member of your family who has lived with you for a long time, leaves home.

"Like Neil Harris and Paul Robinson before him, Alan leaves us with our thanks and very best wishes for the future.

"He has written his own chapter in Millwall's history and he will always be very welcome whenever he returns to The Den.

"While Alan will continue his playing career elsewhere, it would not surprise me to see him back here in some capacity further down the line."

If Abdou and Marquis agree new contracts, Millwall will be left with the following squad for the 2015-16 campaign:

Jimmy Abdou, Mark Beevers, Paris Cowan-Hall, Shaun Cummings, David Forde, Lee Gregory, Tom King, John Marquis, Lee Martin, Sid Nelson, Aiden O’Brien, Fred Onyedinma, Alfie Pavey, Jack Powell, Mahlon Romeo, Ben Thompson, Ed Upson, Byron Webster, Shaun Williams, Keaton Wood, Jamie Philpot.

    I feel refreshed.
Only gutted about Edwards, thought he would have run rings around L1 standard players.
Thanks for your service Dunney, all the best.
    Ship out Forde too please.
Can't wait to see the starting XI Bomber is going to put out come first day of the season.
    Nelson as captain please.
    Big year for youth. MIIIIIIIIII.

@HenryBaird_: hope Edward's stays on after his recovery as a coach, showed a great attitude, we should cash in on Forde now, and Gueye will want to stay in the championship at the very least, but gutted we couldn't keep hold of him, with another solid defender, a workhorse holding midfielder & a quality proven League 1 striker, maybe JET perhaps as another option to what we already have, buzzing for next season & a much needed clear out COYL's

@HenryBaird_: in Harris we trust. Only sad to see big Danny Shittu leave would have been a good partner for Nelson in league one with direct football need someone who can put a firm head on the ball and motivate the young players in a die hard style of play. Thanks Danny for some good memories and passion despite the criticism. ⚽️

@TheBermondseyBomber: Cos Gueye is too good for league 1, he will want to play a high standard so why stop him. He's a good player but not a millwall player like some of them are. Gueye is high championship to low premier league quality in my opinion. Shame though as I obviously would have had him on the team sheet!

@TheBermondseyBomber: I am gutted we have let Goodman go! Had a bright future and think he could have been a good CB in league 1, even if just as a back up to begin with. Gueye would have been good in League 1 but he wants consistent 1st team which we were not giving him, even when harris took over. Very good that so much dead wood has gone, I think Shittu deserves a good send off, was solid for us over a few years and ready to go but still a good servant of the club

I don't especially rate him but as it happens he played through most of the end of season run that got them out of trouble including that last game win against Preston when he looked an adequate left back at that level, which puts him one up on all the others on the retained list.

Fair play to Harris though. The emphasis on youth is really coming through.
Powell, O'Brien, Gregory, Marquis, Cowan-hall, Sid, Onyedinma all retained. Very exciting times ahead. I'm sure the likes of Abdou will show the way. Never been so excited. I said I was before both Lomas and CoCo but knowing the squad lies in the hands of Bomber I can rest assured. MIIIIIIIII.

Not sure Gueye would have the right mentality for League 1, he was a bit fairweather for my liking. As for the rest, I am sorry that Goodman doesn't get another chance, he seemed to have potential. Really interested to see Webster and Beevers still on our books. I heard many rumours that both were looking for other clubs, but to be honest I would certainly keep both of them. Marquis deserved his chance, weel done..

The thing that really sticks out this time, is Harris has sorted it all now. Players know where they stand. Holloway made out he was "the man" but obviously didn't have the balls to let players go and left them wondering if they had a contract or not. Proper man management by Harris, respect has grown further!!

@Block 8: His attitude in many games has sucked. One game in particular, Middlesbrough at home on 21st December sticks with me. He gave up, sulked like a child and offered nothing to the team, made me sick.

@Block 8: I trust Harris's decision, but I think it's a shame about Dunne too. He's been found wanting too many times this season, but how many players atually played well under Holloway? Despite all the grief he gets, he stayed 100% Millwall and I thought he was one of our best players at Wolves. Him and Robbo were the last of our long-standing players. Good luck to him.

I will be amazed if Marquis doesn't decide to sign for Gillingham (he is out of contract) or if Forde doesn't leave for a Championship club. I am surprised Dunne has been released but it's the right move and kudos to Harris for a big decision. Would have liked to keep Gueye but his wages are probably ridiculous as we signed him from Everton. All in all, very happy with this news

The only player I am gutted about is Bailey. If he could get fit, (which I know he wasn't) I think he would have been a great leader in Lg 1, but if he wants Championship football, then fair enough. The rest, including Maggie are well rid, especially my old mate Dunne. I hope Shittu comes back as a coach in the future, he would be great with the youth team I reckon.

I think (haven't checked) they are all out of contract so Bomber has probably had the decision made for him to some degree ( as in had to get rid he may have wanted to keep some but don't have the money). As for Forde isn't he still under contract? Then we are stuck unless someone comes in for him.

Some proper football brains can sit back and view options available, and learn from all those pieces of sh*t we have just let go. Shame re Goodman and Gueye, but theres plenty more talent out there.

Can not argue with any of the releases. Those going are either in search of championship football or just not right for our club. The only thing in my mind is that the squad now lacks experience. We need an experienced centre back and midfielder, someone like Bailey. Williams looked the part at the beginning then faded away. Well done Harris, he has had the courage to do what previous managers failed to do. Can not wait for our first game. COYL

Its a shame about Gueye, a quality payer who was underused imo. Perhaps they are waiting for someone to make an offer for Forde, Dunne ought to find another club somewhere in the lower divisions. The only name missing is Ambler's,. The club is too lose £3 million if they had just invested a third of that in some good players we may not be in div 1 now. Lack of foresight and brains.

Good luck to Neil hope he can find a few decent players to fill the gaps, they definitely need a good CB and a good striker. Hopefully young Fred will be putting a few away next season.

If ducking every time you challenge for a header, walking back as the opposition player breezes past you, shooting only when you dummy it 20 times and having one good shot out of every 400 attempts is what it takes to seem like you're giving it a go, then woolford is the most committed player on earth

Mass cull by Harris, he's showed some balls getting rid of the likes of Dunne, would loved to have been a fly on the wall when he told him can you imagine his reaction "but we were teammates"!

Shows that Harris means business and doesn't believe in sentiment, Dunne has been a great servant to the club but probably time for a change.

Magaye leaving isn't a surprise didn't think he'd play in league 1 same with Woolford, Bailey was injured too much.

Goodman is a surprise, heard lots of good things about him but obviously didn't feature in his plans.

Of those retained I don't think Forde will be at the club come August or Williams, with the Euros next summer both will want to be involved especially Forde who's Irelands number one

Very disappointed about Edwards, Gueye and Woolford if I'm honest. Gueye could have been a key threat for us this year, Edwards was our best full back for ages and Woolford was starting most games and putting a shift in. All the others, including Dunne, were good decisions. Personally gutted about Goodman as well, I thought he was a prospect and can only have been on peanuts.

Very swift and decisive, it also demonstrates a signal of intent.
    Smiling assassin springs to mind.
The wage bill has been cut as a result of the players that have been let go and also as a result of the pay cut the players that are remaining will receive.
I'm not going to give an opinion on who has been let go of who is staying because Neil Harris now has to go out and bring in players that can win us promotion.
We need to hit the ground running from day one.
We need to make the Den a fortress.
It is a huge challenge but it is possible to bounce straight back up and we need to play our part by getting down the Den whenever we can (personal circumstances permitting) to support the Lions.

How many times in previous years have we heard the old chestnuts about "we're not rushing anything", or "there's no point doing anything until July" only to find ourselves playing catch up when going for players before the season starts. We're a completely different proposition in L1, good players at that level will want to sign for us instead of being 20th in the queue like we have been for the last 3 or 4 summers.
It is a shame about Goodman but I guess Harris felt we could only afford 1 regular young player in that position as it needs experience and Sid is clearly ahead of him in the queue, I'm sure he'll be fine though.
    looking forward to August already!

Surprised by a couple ie: Wollford and Goodman but I've seen enough of Bomber to think he knows what he's doing. Goodbye especially to Dunne, Hoff, Shittu and Hoyte.
New players coming in, season tickets up from last season, a new manager who has a lion in his heart.
    Looks good to me.

@keamers: Yep, bound to happen but a chance we'll have to take I guess. Would be typical of our luck if whoever signs Bailey gets a full season out of him. I think the Goodman situation is like when we had Leon Court and Joe Dolan. 2 really good young CBs who came through the youth ranks together and both highly rated but Dolan made it into the first team first and was nurtured by Dyche and Nethercott. Cort was released, went to Southend and ended up making some big money moves and playing at a high level. It's better to be ruthless though and take that chance.

Surprised about Siafra and Goodman but it's obvious now that Romeo was signed to replace Siafra and has someone has already said it was thought that there was no place for 2 inexperienced centre backs in the team but we have to hope Beevers stays to partner Nelson. Nce to see a clean ruthless sweep this early in the close season giiving us 3 months to strengthen the squad especialy in view of the January 2016 traansfer embargo.eraly

Is Beevers the right partner for Nelson?

@detroitlion: Harris spoke of bringing in a experienced powerful Centre Half no doubt to partner Nelson. Would love us to sign Aden Flint from Bristol City, 25yrs old, ~6'6" and scored 15 goals in League One. Outstanding. But that would be major coup of a signing and show of intent but obviously they have been promoted so would he want to drop down a league again... Not likely, but Henry did when he sign for Wolves when they were L1 and we were in the Champ so who knows!

Great to see Bomber and the club act so quickly of everyone that's on their way out im gutted to see Maggie, Goodman and Edwards leave and Yes Dunney has been a good loyal servant to the club but if im honest should have gone a few seasons back it would be good to see him back at the club in some capacity in the future so good luck to him .
A fit Bailey would have been a good leader in Division 1but im sure he will always be injury prone so onwards and up wards ,now just looking forward to see who we bring in can anyone tell me has that Ronaldo talk gone cold ?

Yes I would like to see members of the Queen Vic's Walford's football team being given a chance at Wall and Alfie and Kat on the board they have just won 1 mill on a scratch card in case you do not know - makes sense to me. Jimmi will not sign as his mate Maggie has been released nor will the Gills loanee John Marquis after Wall and all the slaters on here slagged him off. thanks

Im gutted wooly and Maggie have gone as I feel they could have done a job in league one, also Goodman and siafra were highly rated,I just hope this not come back to bite us on the bum

Im also worried that we are going for the cheap option again and we know that does not work.

We have brought a manager from within so no cost there and we are bringing a lot of kids through so again no cost, I just hope this does not back fire.

Also I would bring someone with experience as a director of football to help bomber, as bomber has said he is in regular contact with former managers for advice so why don't we bring someone in to help him.
