Millwall "make new contract offer" to Gillingham loanee

GILLINGHAM manager Justin Edinburgh has revealed that Millwall have offered a contract extension to on-loan striker John Marquis.

Marquis scored his eighth goals in 17 appearances for the League One club in a 1-0 victory over Bradford City on Saturday.

Former Lions boss Ian Holloway was prepared to let the 22-year-old leave on a free transfer in the summer but Neil Harris has been closely monitoring his performances.

The Gills had hoped to sign the forward on a permanent basis.

But Edinburgh, speaking to Kent Online after Marquis' match-winning display, said: "It is difficult because he is not our player but there have been talks.

"I think Millwall have made him a new offer of a contract.

"When players like John Marquis come to the club and have the impact that he has, then you are going to be interested in him, there is no doubt about that.

"We have spoken to John on numerous occasions. He is comfortable here, has fitted into the group well and he has eight goals now.

"If there is something we can do then we are trying hard to do it. When you have someone on loan, if they have a spell like he is, it becomes a different equation."

Marquis Gregory and Obrien plus one more new signing hopefully a target man....that should get us goals but we need midfielders to get in the box too.....Cowan and Fred on the wing....Upson is good not sure about Williams he dont seem strong enough for a battle would be good to sign up Jos but Harris has to buy 3 or 4 and ship out the deadwood we all know who they are its basically a good team which would have stayed up comfortably without Holloway ....so its not all doom and gloom.....Harris and Livers are definetly the men for next season

@baz2262: totally disagree, his performances were good when he was on the pitch. Can't blame a guys attitude when injury seems to be the problem.

@kyran_nicholl07: Im not slagging him off at all but we need to boss the midfield.....October to February he was our best player in a confused team so that wasnt really hard.....not sure hes right for a Harris type team....our team went through hell with Holloway You could probably been our best player

It's telling of the decline of this club that we are now viewing a John Marquis as the answer to our prayers.

@malcolm03: In more ways than one! Paid over a million to get shot of the players in January and he cost us 1.4 million to pay his contract off!!

@wongo: Kevin Braniff in disguise. Every time we get close to getting shot of him, some fool comes along and gives him an extended contract. When will we ever learn.

Marquis bleeds Millwall. With Harris backing him he may yet flourish. Certainly no worse, and perhaps a lot better than a succession of journeymen players who appear content to collect their wage packet.

O'Brien has shown he is a class act in recent games, Gregory will do well in League 1, Marquis has demonstrated his ability.

    Give the boy a chance.

Yep, if we disassociate ourselves (the club) with the player and have no knowledge of him at all, then if we drop to league 1 we would be looking at a guy who is young and hungry (22) who knows how to score regularly 8 goals in 17, half the games 23 goals on average for a whole season (that's good) and wont cost a lot (he is ours already FREE).
I think if Harris gets the job next season then young Phillpot will definitely be around the team
with powell in the middle with experienced bailey and abdou, upson, williams, 2 wingers in fred and PCH (if he gets fit) we have a decent
I think Magaye is off with Woolford but Martin still an option we have a good L1 midfield capable of dominating.
Harding gone so LB is a priority with regular games would Briggs be decent in League 1 still young and technically ours so free??
Cummings Nelson, Beevers (hoov not gonna stay for L1), Goodman back, Siafa RB, sell on Forde and we need a decent L1/championship keeper.

So for me, GK-LB-Striker, 3 players NEEDED, and lots of crap to offload

      @JoeLewis:
No chance, he isn't good enough. And he is a left sided midfielder or left back, not a centre back. He Used to play for cray wanderers and Bromley.

Good news I know he has his critics but he really hasn't had a decent run without the team being in bad form or getting injured himself. Get him signed up and work on his undoubted talent.

No brainer, showed he can score goals in the division we are most likely heading to and costs nothing. He showed signs of this ability at that level in his first season until he got injured. What is there to lose other than potentially selling a 20 goal a season striker to our rivals.

What's obvoius to me is that if we're offering Marquis a contract extension at this stage then Bomber has been given the job permanently.

Marquis leaves us for Gillingham bags 1 goal every 2 games and people are still saying he isnt good enough lol Gillingham have given him a fair chance and he has took it with both hands and is doing the business. Loves Millwall maybe he will do the same for us if we give him a fair chance...If we go down we must give him a fair crack IMO. think we pi55ed him about enough....

IF we go down we need players proven at League One level. 17 games might not be exactly proven but there is evidence he has the ability so surely we'd be mad to let him go to someone who could be a promotion rival next season?
If the worst happens, we need to start preparing as quickly as possible and if we're going to mount a serious push next season we need as much strength in depth as our budget will allow. It's no good relying on just Gregory and O'Brien for goals - if one or both gets injured or suspended we need the competition for places.
Personally I'd sign him up - remember we almost cut Teddy adrift in similar circumstances, if it wasn't for The Doc and our tight budget back in 86 who knows where he'd have ended up?

And, if Southend miss out on promotion from L2 I'd try and get Barry Corr. He's the big, strong but skillful sort of front man you need at that level, a sort of Paul Moody type.
