Philpot has earned the right to be in squad – Millwall boss

JAMIE Philpot was included in Millwall's senior squad for the first time against Brentford on Saturday after impressing for the U21s this season.

Interim manager Neil Harris named Philpot, 18, on the bench at Griffin Park.

The schoolboy's involvement with the first team came at the expense of veteran Ricardo Fuller, who travelled to west London but did not make Harris' final cut for the 2-2 draw.

And Harris explained: "Jamie is the nearest player we've got to Lee Gregory in terms of the way he plays.

"We've got a nice combination of strikers in terms of size for winning aerial balls, some pace and some link up play, and Jamie fitted into our game plan.

"I said to Jamie, 'I'm not really fussed how old you are or how many games you've played'.

"Whether you use younger players or older players, the most important thing is who we need at the time and what suits the team best.

"That's how we're going to pick our squads.

"Jamie has earned the right to be involved because of his U21s performances and the fact he's scored goals, but also because he fit the type we needed on the day.

"He's quick, strong and works the channels well. He's got good pace so he fit the bill.

"Ricardo travelled with us and was as good as gold.

"We decided to go for Jamie for this game, having pushed Aiden O'Brien up front and put Gary Taylor-Fletcher on the bench, to give us something slightly different."

@Jim28: agreed jim. I'm actually excited about next season regardless of what division we are playing in. If we can hold and develop these youngsters then Neil could be our future. Fingers crossed eh

Bring the youngster's in,with a number of more experienced player's to guide them, that is the way forward, under harris we have already seen O'Brien and gregory playing with confidence and without fear so bring on the youngster's and let them play their natural game (not playing them out of position that is ) and i am sure we will see some good exciting football, and with that an upturn in our results.
Keep it going chopper,i for one will be with you all the way,THE MILLWALL WAY.

@Jim28: Your right jim,he does liven things up,and i think gregory and O'Brien can learn a few things from him,he may be a bit podgy but he does get into good position's also he can see a good pass.I dont think he is a 90 min player, but the time he is on the pitch he does well.

@jim1222: If we don't win another point this season would you still keep him? I agree the team looks much better but we're only 3 games in and a fair few are getting ahead of themselves!

@TheBermondseyBomber: The thing is bomber we have the luxery of wait and see as far as chopper is concerned,if he carries on with this team ethic i would go with him,he has got gregory and O'Brien working together and is thinking of back up for them,if he does the same with the defense ,then all well and good.as i say we can wait and see.

@JIM28: yeah couldn't agree more, Taylor fletcher is a really decent player, looks awful but with all the youngsters coming through we need a bit of older quality like fletch, so I hope we hang on to him.

Harris talks sense ...each player has a role so they play their own game not changing their game every week like Holloway wanted.....the only problem I can see is teams trying to sign up our youngsters....we have to put them on contracts NOW....they are our future.....Ambler needs to listen to Chopper ....and probably bring back Webster Marquis and anyone else who Holloway ruined.......yeah and chuck that stoopid data base away......weve got the players we need......all the loanees can leave...COYL

@SE17 Lion: since when has ambler ever listened to anyone but himself. Also agree with keeping fletch & glad to see the back of fuller. I can see Williams getting dropped if he doesn't man up a bit more. Other than that things looking a lot better.

@block 28: I agree with you about William's,he has gone off the boil,he looked class when he came, but he does not get involved as much as he should, some times the game goes on around him, maybe his confidence has been hit by IH stupid tactics,Hopefully chopper can build his confidence back up.

@SE17 Lion: Databases is my job. Someone always comes along with a "better database" all the time. This might work for multinationals who can afford to pay for what they get. But when you are small, it is better to get someone to do this job from within.

@SE14: Databases....statistics....are we not talking human beings....would these players play better with higher wages or better players around them...would they fit in to the style of play....scouts come a lot cheaper....The coach needs to watch them play....no offence to you but I.T is not the way ....its just a job for someone to eek more money out of our club

we havent won under Harris yet and this is a results based industry, you need to defend well ,as well as an end product ,were playing better but without those previously mentioned which we are still in search of ,you cant jump to far ahead, that will then look promising for us which ever leaque were in next season .

One thing we should not overlook is the contibution being made by fitzgerald with the youngster's,as well as making sure we tie these young uns to millwall for a few year's,it is must that we keep fitz onside for a few year's yet.
Fitz showed he had Millwall at heart when he turned down Fulham to stay with us.

WE MUST NOT TAKE HIM FOR GRANTED,so get him tied up as well.

Alex ferguson wouldnt be able to sort this s*** out so lets get behind harris till the end of the season and prepare for league one which is where we will be stuck for the next couple of seasons at least by the way. Forgot to mention i just finished 6th in the prem on football manager and signed zlatan ibrahimovic so really i should be manager ... some of u have ur heads firmly up your asses
