Philpot has earned the right to be in squad – Millwall boss

JAMIE Philpot was included in Millwall's senior squad for the first time against Brentford on Saturday after impressing for the U21s this season.

Interim manager Neil Harris named Philpot, 18, on the bench at Griffin Park.

The schoolboy's involvement with the first team came at the expense of veteran Ricardo Fuller, who travelled to west London but did not make Harris' final cut for the 2-2 draw.

And Harris explained: "Jamie is the nearest player we've got to Lee Gregory in terms of the way he plays.

"We've got a nice combination of strikers in terms of size for winning aerial balls, some pace and some link up play, and Jamie fitted into our game plan.

"I said to Jamie, 'I'm not really fussed how old you are or how many games you've played'.

"Whether you use younger players or older players, the most important thing is who we need at the time and what suits the team best.

"That's how we're going to pick our squads.

"Jamie has earned the right to be involved because of his U21s performances and the fact he's scored goals, but also because he fit the type we needed on the day.

"He's quick, strong and works the channels well. He's got good pace so he fit the bill.

"Ricardo travelled with us and was as good as gold.

"We decided to go for Jamie for this game, having pushed Aiden O'Brien up front and put Gary Taylor-Fletcher on the bench, to give us something slightly different."

@Jim28: agreed jim. I'm actually excited about next season regardless of what division we are playing in. If we can hold and develop these youngsters then Neil could be our future. Fingers crossed eh
