Video: Millwall striker maintains goalscoring form for Gills

MILLWALL striker John Marquis scored his second goal of the week to help Gillingham to another win in League One.

Marquis, who is on loan at Priestfield Stadium until the summer, when his Lions contract expires, sealed a 4-2 victory over MK Dons with a cool near-post finish.

The 22-year-old now has five goals in seven appearances for the Gills. He was also on target in the Kent side's 2-1 victory at Peterborough in midweek.

@333lions: tricky, he's looking half decent in league 1 with 5 goals in 7 appearances.

Compare that to 5 in 42 appearances with the Lions!

Yes I know it's at a lower level, same argument with Fred at Wycombe.

The harsh reality is we might be a league 1 side next season so if Marquis happens to be a late developer and we we choose this season to let him go the club, not for the 1st time, end up looking like mugs.

@MFC Lion: How many of those 42 games were as sub? Averaged 5 starts a season at 'wall. For the first time in his career he's in a team capable of putting the ball at his feet when he's in a reasonable position and is getting a run of games. Don't think he'll ever be up to the championship. We should be chasing the players giving him the ball.

@333lions: No, unless we are in League 1 as that's his level. He is not the player we need, but what we need is very rare, especially for a club our size.

John marquis has openly stated his time at Millwall has come to an end. What is the point in showing him scoring goals for that bunch of hillbillys? Will we get clips of the likes of Malone and Easter if they score for their new teams?

@norris: wouldn't mind a clip of Malones own goal the other week.

Tell you what, millwall should be having a good look at the gills number 23 ,BRADLEY DACK, each time they show us marquis's goals the 23 keeps catching my eye, setting up marquis or scoring himself from midfield. He's only 21 from Greenwich , seems full of running and can deliver a pass/ goal. We look like being in div 1 next season so could need both.

      @bordersarebest0170:
Pal at work who knows his stuff and is a season ticket holder at Gills told me this about him borders.
He reckons Dack is a headless chicken at the moment. He runs around giving stupid fouls away and is nowhere near ready for the Championship. He reckons he has some potential but loads to learn.
Not what we need right now by the sounds of things but who knows further down the line.

People who banged on about getting the likes of Doyle, Hanson, Bradshaw etc should be hoping we get Marquis back! People keep saying they want goal scorers and look at who is performing in league 1 and hope they can perform in the championship. Well Marquis is showing he can do it in League 1 when given a run in a team consistently. So rather than splash the cash on a risk why not bring Marquis back and give him a run in the team. He could be a gem!

If we don't get a goal scorer we are down, its been like for a couple of years. What does Ollie do? Get more midfielders and now Pennant from an Indian League, says it all really.

@SE17 Lion: You're right, last season we had Jackson, Campell and McDonald all who had previous impressive scoring records but were totally impotent here due to lack of or wrong kind of service. We had 3 strikers who looked like midgets against the Championship defenders and the only service they were getting were hopeful high balls into the area instead of putting it where they needed it. Some things never change.

First time he has had a run in a first team and he is improving. The last time he got a run in the first team was under KJ and he was injured the next game so didn't get chance to do much about it. I still believe he is a decent player and maybe Championship standard. Good age and showing a scoring instinct in League 1, a player with those stats would cost a lot of money. Lets see if he can continue it till end of the season.

@glyngo: problem is he's out of contract so at the end of the season he can go to whoever offers him the most money!

It's ridiculous really that he now looks half capable of scoring for the first time in his career. His contract is almost up and when he never scored we kept giving him contract extensions!

Believe he's a wall fan so perhaps he would stay.

Don't know what to expect next with our striker related problems.

@MFC Lion: maybe we expected too much from him at an early age..? Always shown good strength (for his age) when I've seen him play. But it still always looked like the odds were heavily against him to score... The answer could simply be that he has moved down a division.. Same with Fred.. Plus a change of scenery etc. Sometimes players just click elsewhere...

Agree with your above comment on whether or not to keep him... Tricky indeed... It'd be just our luck he starts to get really good just as he's walking out the door...

Seriously, how did we end up with all these players out of contract. Surely with a year left you have to decide whether to let them go and get a fee or extend their contract by a year. If no buyers then you send them out on loan for a year. My view on Marquis was that he was still an unknown. As someone rightly pointed out he has never had a significant stint in the first team to develope. The Norwich game was a joke selection, i.e he gets put into the first team with what effectively was a reserve side because we had another game in the coming days, so he plays one game where the team gets not unexpectantly thumped and is sent packing again. His selection for that games makes no sense. What we should be doing is saying right, this lad has 1 year left, can he make the grade, if yes but we cannot afford to put him in our starting eleven then extend his contract by a year and send him on loan for a season and see how he gets on. Then make a judgement at the end of the year whether to sell or not. If no, then sell him with a year left on his contract. As things stand we cannot win, if he plays well then it's unlikely he will re-sign for us since no doubt he well enjoy life at the club where he is performing. I think we have to back our own opinion. I'd see no issue with paying a youngster a wage even for an extra year if it was on the basis that we believed he could come good but it never materialised.
Team selection this year has been odd to say the least. One minute you're great starting 10 games the next you're not good enough for the club let alone a squad member.
How do we expect Gregory to get up to speed and score consistently from the bench? We cannot afford to buy a decent striker, fact. The chances of finding a decent striker who can hit the ground running are ski, another fact. So Gregory is our best bet and therefore must play in my opinion.

I have to say I never rated the lad but he is doing the business at the Gills, so hats off to him. At twenty two he should have been a regular for our first team by now but Ollie, Kenny and all before never rated him enough to put him in. I saw lots of enthusiasm and effort but not enough to think he would make it at this level. I really wish him all the best but personally I would move on.

Marquis and Fred could be an excellent partnership 4 us next season in league 1. I dont understand every player millwall lose or loan end up do better at the club's that snap them up. Confusing. I dont believe all that rubbish about there not championship material or there league 1 players at best it's rubbish.
