Video: Millwall loanee on target again in Gillingham victory

MILLWALL loanee John Marquis scored one goal and created another in a match-winning performance that helped Gillingham to three points at Peterborough.

Marquis has found the back of the net four times in six appearances for the League One club, where he'll remain until the end of the season – and the end of his Lions contract.

And the 22-year-old does not expect to be handed a new deal.

Speaking to Kent Online, Marquis said: "I think my time at Millwall is done. I had a brief chat with the manager there and I am not in his immediate plans.

"I'm here until the end of the season and my contract is up. It can all change very quickly but I think my time is pretty much done there.

"I just want to be playing and showing people what I can do. I want to be playing football and scoring goals in a winning team."

Good luck never really given the chance to improve...nobody realises that he needed to go out on loan more and learn his skill properly instead of throwing him in the deep end and expecting him to score...even those that have been in the game a while have scored about the same amount!

Kenny jackets biggse weakness was youth development and if we loaned out marquis earlier he might be ok at championship by now. Lomas did 1 good thing for us 1 which was getting free in a decent contract when bigger clubs were sniffing araund and holloway a seems the best at this but still SIGN A DECENT STRIKER HOLLOWAY

6 goals in 53 games for us. 19 goals in 53 games at League One and below.

Only 6 of those games were in League One and he's banged in 4. Typical of a player in today's game, seeing as he is out of contract in summer.

He's not good enough. He had plenty of decent runs in the first team, both with us and in lower leagues. Regardless of runs in the first team, Stevie Wonder can see he is out of his depth in our division (and I'd be interested to see his goals to game ratio for Gillingham if they do sign him up). He is a grafter, I'll give him that, but his technique and decision-making is so poor, it looks as though he's just been plucked from the crowd and asked to play.

@spartacus: What is wierd is that Kenny Jackett was a youth manager at Man City before he came to us!!

He has started scoring at last, this could give him the confidence to improve, four goals in six is a good return in that division - I think he should be given a contract for at least another year.

@Jim28: I wouldn't say he's been given loads of chances. Look how many games Gregory has played and he's still finding he's feet at this level.
I hope Marquis gets some confidence in front of goal this season then comes back to us next season.
Could be like a new signing for us.

Never had a decent run in the first team due to injury and manager selection, glad to see him take his chance when it came.

John's words are typical of someone who has not in his plans to return, and Ollie does not have in his plans that john return ...
Thanks anyway for the effort you have always shown, and good luck for the future ...

@alpha_dogg: It should be noted that half of those 53 games were as sub, often for less than fifteen minutes. That said he does seem to have found his level and a team capable of putting the ball at his feet when he's facing goal.

Personally I don't think he is up to it but you never know and while he is on our books lets see what happens. I would like to see Fred get a chance though he looks the part.

Shame about the timing of Marquis' decent spell at Gillingham. As he'll be out of contract they'll get him on a free and we won't be able to do what other clubs do to us - crank up the price and start a bidding war (i.e. Puncheon and Wood). Maybe could have got a £100k for him last season.

Why pay players struggling to get near the first eleven and let them leave for free? Possible lack of foresight by our coaching staff that he was never going to make it at Championship level?

Now that Marquis has had a decent spell on loan,

Can someone tell me what prolific striker was being kept out of the team by John over the last couple of years ??
Sherringham was loaned to Aldershot back in the day, so why ditch young players who have come through our ranks, just so that we can get in the geriatrics who haven't done any better anyway and are on at least 3 x the salary ??
Why send Fred out on loan to get experience when he is better than what we are using.. who is beating defenders/crossing/scoring in his place ??
If we were in the Top 3 i could understand it !!

    That's a fair point 24seven.

But you could also ask the question what did Marquis do to stay in the team. Like others have already said, he did get chances and the effort was probably there on his part. Sadly, for all of us, he just wasn't up to standard.

I'm all for youngsters getting their chance - in fact I'd love to see Goodman and Fred back from their loans and I can't understand why O' Brien hasn't had more game time - but even for all the dross we've had up front in the last couple of years I don't think more minutes for Marquis would have improved anything.

I'll reliterate my concern that why did it take so long for our coaching staff to realise he wasn't good enough - now he gets to go on a free!

So John is a half decent League 1 striker, who would have thought? Good luck to the lad, just wish he was banging em in for another club. £150k Mr.Scully, final offer. NOLU
