Leeds United midfielder Michael Tonge joins Millwall on loan

MILLWALL have agreed a loan deal for Leeds midfielder Michael Tonge.

Tonge, who is known to Lions assistant Nigel Gibbs from their time together at Elland Road, will join the Lions until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old will not be eligible to play against his parent club when Millwall travel to Yorkshire a week on Saturday.

A combative midfielder, boss Ian Holloway believes Tonge can act as a defensive shield in front of his back four.

Holloway had been looking to strengthen his engine room with Nicky Bailey continuing to receive treatment on an ongoing calf problem.

@sadlier89: Martinez/Upson are very different players to Tonge. Tonge will get stuck into a tackle and do that Nicky Bailey job of allowing players to get further up the pitch like Williams, Upson and Martinez to create more chances....

I'm not sold on Tonge, we will have to wait and see!!

@Bradders: Tongue was a great young player in his Blades days. He is a proper Millwall type of player. Good signing.

I always liked Tonge. He has always stood out when he has played for us. Some cover for Williams is not a bad idea. We missed him terribly when he has injured and he picked unother yellow on Saturday so a ban is probably on the horizon. It can't hurt to have players of Tonge's quality around. 31 - what is the problem with that? As an athlete he should be in his prime.

Could be a good player but one that we don't need right now. Upson looked good again Forest and with Williams, Jimmy, Martinez, Powell and Bailey to come back I don't think another CM is a priority. Really in need of a Striker, I for one would have rather seen Varney or Church than Tonge as it would have given us more choice up front in an area we are struggling. O well, Welcome and hopefully this will end up being a great signing but it reminds me a bit of Derry last year who was awful!!

@whiteliont: I think we can forget about Bailey because even when he has recovered he will not be match fit for ages and if he ever does make it to the pitch he will not be around for long before he is injured or sent off, he cannot be relied on so get shot. Then there is the invisible man Martinez, another total waste of good food. Seems to be made of the same stuff Bailey is made from (glass) and along with Hoyte the 3 of them have given so little for their wages and are a waste of our valuable resources (cash). I would love to see a breakdown of the cost per minute of their playing time.

Only at Millwall! We miss out on a young Dutch striker with potential & get a 31 year old midfielder instead ( to go with the other 7 or 8 midfielders we have already ).

@the verminhater: Miss out? The guy was a proven in the Dutch second league...so similar level to league 2, he signs for a team that were intrested for ages, and we just tried to jumped in last minUte, what we're people expecting to happen.

I agree this isn't the right signing for us and we nneed a striker, just fed up with so many people acting as if no one at the club can do anything right

i read into this that bailey aint anywhere near playing - we do need a proper holding player, when williams has to go there we lose his passing and i think Upson is better going forward too - didnt Tonge used to be a winger with Sheffield Utd - i always hated him as an oppo player

Not sure but he's here so welcome.
We do need a bit more b***** in the middle beside Williams especially if ollie reverts back to his 4231 formation. Jimmy bless him done nothing wrong at all when called upon but is not a permanent fixture. Ollie right to bring someone in to share that responsibility but not sure if Tonge is that man for us but good luck to him anyway.

Makes me laugh how everyone seems to know the ins and outs of every player mentioned. Our manager, and surrounding staff have a good enough football knowledge to make signings that may be of use. As much as I love jimmy, this makes sense to me. Lets get behind this bloke, as long as he puts in a shift i'm fine with giving him a chance.

the good thing about this is that IH has at last recognised we are too open through midfield - Tonge may not be great but it signals his intent to be more compact - Tonge's been around the block - he knows his role and has a good touch if i remember - if he gets a clear role of protecting the back 4 and establishing possession he might have the legs for 10 good games - williams abdou and upson should have the legs ahead - chaplow and martinez to me are also not natural defenders - we are getting experience - you have seen with Powell it is not an easy position to learn - i'm giving it 7/10

As much as i love the work that Jimmy does, i think he has got this fella because, he is comfortable on the ball, can pick out a pass and can put his foot in when needed, we do need to be 'clever nasty' . played alongside Williams, with Upson as a more attacking midfielder ?

Have been missing a ball winner/hard tackler in midfield all season. Seems as if Nigel Gibbs is having an input (was assistant at Leeds), so he must know that Tonge is the man for the job.
This will free up Williams to be more adventurous, so all things considered a good loan signing.
It is all coming together now, and I expect a strong finish to the season now, with a comfortable mid table finish, with Nottm Forest and Charlton in freefall and Scott Malone dragging Cardiff down, I confidently predict that we will not go down !!!!

@mikeco73@aol.com: must be something do with Holloway not having £750k available to bid for the player. Cardiff meanwhile have millions in parachute payments.

But yes you're right of course Holloway is a joke and should have bid for him even though he hasn't got the cash.

@MFC Lion: The fact is on a number of occasions(normaly during season ticket renewal)John Berylson has publicly stated money would be made available for the 'right player. There clearly is no money so why b******* us? On another note i fear Tonge will spend a lot of his spell suspended,he is an aggresive player and once he is wearing the blue of Millwall the refs will be flashing their cards like crazy.

@norris: may have something to do with not selling many season tickets. The right player becoming available probably means the unlikely scenario of a quality player being available for very little money.

Even the so so players tend to cost way more than we ever spend. Considering how little is splased out and that we survive on loans being in the championship is actually quite an achievement.

Why have we got Upson( not a bad player) and waste of space and proper sick note Martinez?
Welcome aboard michael Tonge, hope you prove that there is life in some 30+ year olds!

I greet this news with the same enthusiasm I had when Sean Derry joined us from Palarse. Fact of the matter is that he is beyond his best and cannot get into the Leeds team, so something really special is going to have to happen for him to change our season. We only have three central midfield positions depending on formation, so Tong will only play if we play three defensive midfielders because he wouldn't beat Abdou or Williams into the first team.

As I read it was Tonge in part exchange for Woolford so Tonge comes in as more midfield cover, I would like to see Beevers along side Hoovield, play a strong midfield Williams Jimmy/Tonge & Upson and let Fabbrini, Gregs & Gueye/Martin try and win the game

People criticsing a 31 year old in place of signing young potential. We cannot afford to buy young potential. We must develop it. Until then, IH can only have stop-gap solutions as he tries to keep us up and hope he can keep keeping us up until younger players break through.
