Video: Millwall striker scores twice for Gillingham in win

JOHN Marquis bagged a brace for loan club Gillingham as they recorded a 3-2 victory over Oldham Athletic in League One on Saturday.

Marquis joined the Kent club on an initial month's loan at the start of January but that deal looks likely to be extended following his recent goalscoring form.

The 22-year-old was also on target in Gillingham's 3-1 win against Coventry the previous week.

      @Millwall1979: loan him till the end of the season. He's still only young and still learning. He may not of done it yet for us but he's got his best years ahead of him.

        @Aaron:

        Disagree he has been around the first team now for around four years ? Correct me if I am wrong in my view should have developed and time to let him go and let the likes of Aidan and Alfie pavey see what they can do

          @Millwall1979: So what you are saying is Marquis would be good for us IF we get relegated since he is scoring goals in League 1?? That's not a bad thing to have then??

          I agree he has been around for years but he took those goals pretty well, could be a late developer or could score loads of goals in league 1 get some confidence and come back here and score goals... remember he is a Millwall fan, so will always give 100% and you can't put a price on that!!

            @Bradders:

            If I was saying that I would be saying that I am prepared to accept league one next season

            Can we afford to keep paying wages to someone who may make it in a few years or use that money on someone who can come in and do a job ?

            I think the likes of pavey and o brien deserve the chance(s) he has had and not took

            Agree he is millwall mate but then so was robbo, dunne etc are they good enough to keep us up or take us to the next level no they are not

            We haven't got the money to be sentimental with players contracts

            @Millwall1979: I'm not by any means accepting relegation but what if we sold him in January to Gillingham for 250k (for example) and we end up getting relegated??

            Marquis is a different type of player to OBrien and Pavey, Marquis is a lump of a forward, like a Hoff.... isn't pretty but does a job, if he can score goals and get confidence then no reason why he still can't do it here!.... He isn't on a lot at all trust me!

            @Bradders:
            Firstly if they offered 250k bite there hand off

            I wouldn't say he was a lump he don't win much in air either

            Clear the decks and start again it's only way out of the rut the bald idiot needs to be ruthless and fair play (I been his biggest critic) he seems to be doing that

            The squad needs trimming and for every three midfielders say (Chaplow, bailey , Wright ) he needs one player of quality in and someone who will push to get in squad same goes for upfront and defence

    This is disturbing,before you know it we will be abandoning any attempt to sign a decent striker and Holloway and Ambler will be on here telling us Marquis is the answer to all our prayers!

      @norris: Too true. A goal-scorer should be No 1 target.
      But that will mean spending money.

    Tidy finishes for both and good footwork for the first. Half a season of regular games will do him good, still young and could develop as an asset but remains to be seen if he can improve enough to do it at championship level...

      @lucusmckeus: and Hoyte will turn into a world class left back and Bailey and Chaplow will be ever present in the squad, injury free.

      He's scored 3 goals for Gillingham for gods sake! Amazing, so he's equalled his Millwall record for a season then.

      Time to let him go, a fee would be fantastic but I would just be pleased to be rid to stop reading about his potential to be good at some point in the future. It's not going to happen!

    I can see us grabbing a new striker on deadline day but will it be a goal scorer probs not. Usually a 32 year old who had one good season back in 2007/2008 but we all have that hope we will grab chris wood or someone similar

    He has surely found his level then. He has been given lots of opportunities at the club. He's got a lot of running in him but has never quite impressed me enough as a striker he needs to find the net. It's a gamble with his future now. If we go down he could be useful to the squad. If we keep him on but stay up, we'll lose him for free. Tough decision.

    Quality goals especially the second. Not many would of chose near post in that position. Top finish.
    Always want him to do well Marquis as he's one of our own.
    Hope you can start banging them in regular.

    Both those goals look great in terms of movement and the finishing, but as has been said it is against League 1 defenders and the second one came from a sloppy error. It is possible for players to improve at his age and playing in a 4-4-2 is obviously better for him, but can he cut it at Championship level? based on several seasons' evidence I don't think so. Two swallows don't make a summer as they say.

    Who is Gillinghams No.23? Seems a handy player! Was involved in everything there, set up Marquis with both goals, brought a player down for the penalty and scored the winner with a crack volley. Sign up the fella with Volley Olly!

        @junkmale: Thanks! Just had a look at his career thus far, a Greenwich born lad still learning, raw talent but with that mane of hair and style of play, he has got a bit of the 'Warlock' about him. Definitely one of those types of players the club should take a closer look at...

    JM has previously worked under managers that never really gave him a run and at the time Millwall was not investing in the youth system. under IH he is actually getting a chance in a team which is asking questions of him and his ability. I would say, forget what he did before, it's only really now that he is being given a chance and judging by results at Gillingham he is responding. At 22 he can still develop into a good player.

    Anyone notice that Marquis finished both goals left footed ? He's right footed.
    That's a young man who's not afraid to have a swing at it and good luck to him.
    Maybe at the Den he would've bottled it due to us judgmental sods in the seats !!
    Give him a break.

      @Block 8: or he's actually realised he's left footed and I've been mistakenly thinking he's no good for all these years.

      Please let it be true Marquis, as a fellow Leftie I will forget the school boy error of not knowing which is your stronger foot.

    I'm torn on marquis as holloway is really plugging the youth he could ups do well but mRquis has had unknown chances now and I'm up for giving him one last chance but players like obrien should be tested first.
