Exclusive: Scott McDonald discussing his future at Millwall

SCOTT McDonald could make a surprise exit from Millwall in the coming days.

NewsAtDen understands that the Australian has been discussing his future with manager Ian Holloway and the Lions' hierarchy in the past 48 hours.

McDonald has been almost ever-present in the side this season but was an unused substitute during last Saturday's defeat to Ipswich.

The former Middlesbrough and Celtic striker is out-of-contract in the summer.

Five players have left Millwall already this month.

Paul Robinson, Josh Wright and Jermaine Easter cancelled their contracts, while Scott Malone and Matthew Briggs joined Cardiff and Colchester respectively.

    To be fair, his attitude on the pitch has been very good, battled hard and never stopped running. I personally think he will be missed.

      @glyngo: It's a fair assumption that anyone getting their contract cancelled is one of the trouble makers, so if he goes, good riddance!

          @mfclions: his was different, he wasn't getting in the team, same with Robbo, whereas there appears a role for Mcdonald, so either he is trouble, or Ollie doesn't want to hold onto any player that won't commit their future to the club & he won't sign a new contract, in which case f**k him!

            @coldblowlane87: You're making a lot of assumptions there Coldblow, I can't prove you are wrong but I can comment on his performances on the pitch, and they have been very good. It was only a few weeks ago when IH said taking McD off changed the game and lost it for us. I can't imagine he is going with IH's blessing.

            @glyngo: it might just be that holloway don't rate him, can't imagine he's a problem or he wouldn't have played so many games . Personally I think he's a trier but just not effective enough but no one can have a go about his work rate .

      One of our better players IMO. Holloway should be the one discussing his future.

      @glyngo: McDonald would probably fulfil his full potential if he was ever played as part of a front two with a big physical like Hanson who can hold up the ball as his partner. Looking at some of his goals for Celtic that's how it was and his small enough to be an awkward 'fox in the box' type of player.

      I see we have Jordan Archer playing for us against QPR yesterday, ex-Tottenham keeper could very well be the answer to adding some competition for that position. Progress being made, we get there!

    The real problem is that all this shitt is happening halfway through the season, i cant imagine how a club could be managed any worse than this , and thats from the top down .

      @thecolumbusblock: you are of course, absolutely right. However the one thing that must be accepted is that we are where we are and the season has just one plain objective-staying in the championship. If that means decisions must be made now then so be it. All normality has to be put to one side while everything is geared up to achieving that objective.

    Will be a shame to see him go as he is a very hardworking player and been one of our better performers this season... However, he cannot hit the target, and holds on to the ball for far too long to be effective in playmaker role he has been played in.
    If Scott does go then I wish him all the best, but it will free up a lot of wages as he is one of the highest earners at the club.

    Scott McDonald again is another player who will leave and join a league1, 2 or even lower league club. We (as a club) need exciting players that other clubs want etc. He's the wrong side of 30 plus he's been part of a team which is sitting in the relegation zone at present so Holloway is right to weild the axe. For me, the lad from Watford over McDonald after what i saw last weekend

    I said this when Fabbrini signed and when it was rumoured another departure was to be announced, I immediately said it would be him.

    Personally, I am not sad to see him go. I think he is on big money at this club and has a lot of influence in and around the dressing room and he's not the sort of player who I want representing my team. I also think he's a greedy sod and hasn't been the player/investment we expected when he signed. Top player in his prime but not a Millwall player.

    Free's up big wages too for someone to come in next week!

    Oh no!!! How will we ever replace his goals?

    Sorry Scott, you're a tidy player on the ball but for the money you're supposedly on we have plenty of cheaper options already at the club to pass the ball sideways and not score.

    Why do people get sentimental when someone leaves , i think hell be missed and worked hard,look at the bigger picture ,he was brought in by lomas as an experienced goalscorer and one of the highest wage earners who was responsible for us nearly going down last season ,his goals for was abysmal last season ,why did they then move him to midfield ? played more than any other player this season and again so far his goals record is poor ,and on top of that he keeps the ball to long in midfield ,just worried they might sign him up again!!.

      @The Roar:
      He played in midfield last season !!!? Don't let the facts get in the way though. I'll tell you a real fact, if Scott McDonald started 30 odd games per season IN HIS ACTUAL POSITION, he would score at least 15 goals. We have been crying out for a goal scorer for 3 seasons now and we signed a man who had a career record of 1 goal every 3 matches including in the champions league. He comes down to us and all of a sudden he's an 'attacking midfielder' , it's b******* and we as a club have held him back in all honest because he's a better striker than we should of been able to afford, typical Millwall that we've played him out of position for 18 months.

          @Big Millwall:
          He averaged 1 goal every 3 games before he joined us, also scored 13 league goals the season before he joined. All scored playing as a striker. Then we use him as an AM and he's got 6 in a year and a half. We have started him upfront once this year vs bradford and he scored. Unless you've got a few million pound, or you get lucky, you will struggle to find a striker whos scored 138 in 336 appearances, that is a very good return for anyone. This has been my major problem with holloway, as I feel playing him up front could of solved our problems on the goal front and also allowed more opportunity and game time for upson/gueye/Chaplow to play that AM role as i feel they'd all be able to play there more naturally than McDonald did. Oh well, all irrelevant now as he's gone! My guess is he will score a few for whoever he joins next, as I'm sure he won't be signing for anyone ever again before getting guarantees about what position he will play!

    He has a lot of quality but doesn't make enough of an impact on games(perhaps it is the quality of those around?)We are shipping them out much faster than we are bringing them in,are we preparing for life in league one?Will we start next season like Blackpool?unable to put out a full squad? If Fabrinni is a success,is there a deal in place?I am sorry to be so negative but these are worrying times.

    No great loss in my opinion. Average at best in the grand scheme of things and if we can not find a better option than a "trier" then things are bleak. We need cutting edge, he does not possess that and he was also one of the players who took too long to get on board with IH's vision for progress in the early stages.

      @lionrampant: Agree. Hatfuls of goals for Celtic which showed he knows where the net is and I expected him to be a 15 a season man at our level. Whilst he's been messed about positionwise, hasn't delivered with any consistency and as a high earner it's got to be the right call. Shame.

    If he goes, it frees up a ton of funds, which might go towards the elusive half decent striker we've been looking for...
    But there's a possibility he could stay... He has been a regular in the squad, kept up his fitness and you can't fault the fella for work rate.. Also, Ollie did say in one of his interviews that 'maybe one or two players might have to realise that they won't be on the same wages they're on currently, with the situation the way it is..' (something along those lines..)
    So maybe a squad player contract with lower wages?? Might work for Scott if the length of contract sees him through...?

    cant see how people can say were freeing up funds contracts are probably being paid up in full only thing we would not be paying are win bonuses which we haven been paying anyway and they only apply when we are a top 10 postion so its just squad reduction really
