Millwall and Cardiff chasing Palace midfielder O'Keefe

MILLWALL are battling Cardiff to sign Stuart O'Keefe from Crystal Palace.

The combative midfielder, who played under manager Ian Holloway during his time in charge at Selhurst Park, is set to leave the Eagles this month.

O'Keefe's contract expires in the summer so the Lions' south London rivals want to cash in now before they lose him for nothing in six months.

The 23-year-old featured in nine of Palace's 13 wins in the Premier League last season but has played just three times this term.

He made a handful of starts after going out on loan to bottom club Blackpool in November but is back training with Alan Pardew's side.

Millwall are now waiting to hear whether O'Keefe is interested in joining them, with Championship rivals Cardiff also chasing a deal.

Holloway and chief executive Andy Ambler have been working tirelessly to secure other targets this week.

And while a number of deals have broken down, the Lions remain confident of bringing in more fresh faces before the close of the transfer window.

Millwall thought they had reached an agreement to sign a player from the Belgian leagues but talks collapsed suddenly on Tuesday.

The Lions do not have a game this weekend so Holloway could travel to the continent to scout another target.

"I'm determined to get people who definitely want to be here," Holloway told the Southwark News.

"We've hit lots of buffers. Things were happening that now aren't. We need more targets than anyone else because we get turned down a lot.

"When you get so far down the line with something and then all of a sudden it collapses, it's very frustrating. This window is the worst because clubs change their valuations of players.

"The lads won't be training on Saturday so that gives me a chance to possibly watch a game overseas. Our market in England is very difficult because everyone wants the same players."

Left back Matthew Briggs is close to joining Colchester United on loan and the deal could go through today.

That's the trouble we are in and our reputation when it states a number of targets have fallen through plus the wages we just can't get quality have to look around lower leagues for hidden gems they must be out there.

    Another midfielder!
What about a defender or two, or a centre forward?

@SE11 Lion: Agreed, but we do need another combative midfielder. We have too many jack-of-all-trades players in the likes of Woolford/Chaplow/Upson/Martinez and could do with releasing a couple of them at least. Specialists like Williams/Macdonald and Abdou play specific roles in the team and none of them are the tough tackling types, such as Austin (Leeds).

@glyngo: If he's a like for like replacement for Bailey all well and good, we've missed Bailey loads.
What I wouldn't give to turn the clock back and have Terry Hurlock in the side now, I don't think he'd be too pleased with a few of his team mates letting his and our beloved club down.

@DELBOY64: Bailey offers something different to the other when fit, but I agree that those four must be preparing to move on soon. I personally would keep one of them; Woolford, as a jack-of-all-trades player is very useful in the squad and he can play wide midfield (not winger) or attacking midfield if required.

@TheBermondseyBomber: Fret not. With the squad being given a thoroughly deserving day off on Saturday it gives Holloway and Ambler a weekend in Antwerp. Ambler will take the time to 'see how they do things over there' whilst Holloway will down a few Stella Artois and then complete the signing of three more midfielders who will gel 'immediately' with the rest of the squad. You couldn't make this up.

getting on the players backs normally comes from them being ineffective on the pitch , which often comes from the manager's coaching and tactics - making average players look bad - that is the Hollway effect lately - why deny it

of course to s*** players before they even play is just stupid

BUT when you see a conveyor belt of players come through the club and start to underperform after sometimes a promising start, you have to ask why - and posters see the next player as being the same
last year we had more than 50 players didn't we - a situation IH recognised as unhelpful and was determined to stop - well have we had 40 plus this year again ? - it is an utter joke - IH has to get players he believes in and motivate them and coach them to improve to create a functioning team (not world beaters) but compettitve in this league - but he hsn't done that - it cant always be the players fault

You are 100% wrong. I could name you 2 players that I know, personally, who are both championship players who have been approached by Millwall in the past 5 years and both turned us down because of the fans reputation. People really don't want to go to work and be called a c*** every 5 minutes. Just because we love Millwall more than we love our wives doesn't mean everyone else does! Too many people forget it's just a job for most players.

Being a practising lawyer is one of the things I am least proud of, but as one I am able to look at all sides of an argument, and based upon everything I've learned in business, life, relative success and failure plus being football and Millwall mad all my life - my opinion is that IH is not doing a great job and our beloved team are in total disarray. IH has brought in more than 20 of his own players and he can't put out a team to compete with Bradford and we lies every week and little sign if progress, with 12 wins on 52 games - That's progress and makes him beyond criticism? Players don't want to come here due to the constant barrage of abuse directed at our own players, think fans need to take some responsibility, for the players confidence issues on the pitch screaming at them is not the answer, players from other teams must talk to each-other, we all need to support this team and new players will need to gel no be afraid to make a mistake.

I think we have goalscorers in Gregory and Gueye, with the Hoff playing up the middle, they combined for the goal against ipswich very well!, but Gueye should not be on the wing, him and Gregory should be interchanging, with Fabbrini alternating on either wing. we miss a 'Bailey' type player along side Williams and this fella could be the perfect fit!! as for the back 4, well holloway has his fullbacks and Nelson who he has said will remain skipper against reading so a tough experienced CB required. IMO i would give Webster a run , but i know i am in the minority.

@LETEMCOME: @SE17 Lion: Your both your rockers, no one is a fan of IH we're fans of MILLWALL. You've watched thousands of games have you, well a monkey can listen to a thousand pieces of opera but not know how to compose one or indeed understand some of the subtles.
It's needed for people to keep reminding you negative people that we need to keep behind the team, club (including IH) and all the players to get out of this mess, I do think it's better you nay'sayers don't go to matches as your negativety would be felt around the ground, specially when the first pass goes astray.
