Millwall and Cardiff chasing Palace midfielder O'Keefe

MILLWALL are battling Cardiff to sign Stuart O'Keefe from Crystal Palace.

The combative midfielder, who played under manager Ian Holloway during his time in charge at Selhurst Park, is set to leave the Eagles this month.

O'Keefe's contract expires in the summer so the Lions' south London rivals want to cash in now before they lose him for nothing in six months.

The 23-year-old featured in nine of Palace's 13 wins in the Premier League last season but has played just three times this term.

He made a handful of starts after going out on loan to bottom club Blackpool in November but is back training with Alan Pardew's side.

Millwall are now waiting to hear whether O'Keefe is interested in joining them, with Championship rivals Cardiff also chasing a deal.

Holloway and chief executive Andy Ambler have been working tirelessly to secure other targets this week.

And while a number of deals have broken down, the Lions remain confident of bringing in more fresh faces before the close of the transfer window.

Millwall thought they had reached an agreement to sign a player from the Belgian leagues but talks collapsed suddenly on Tuesday.

The Lions do not have a game this weekend so Holloway could travel to the continent to scout another target.

"I'm determined to get people who definitely want to be here," Holloway told the Southwark News.

"We've hit lots of buffers. Things were happening that now aren't. We need more targets than anyone else because we get turned down a lot.

"When you get so far down the line with something and then all of a sudden it collapses, it's very frustrating. This window is the worst because clubs change their valuations of players.

"The lads won't be training on Saturday so that gives me a chance to possibly watch a game overseas. Our market in England is very difficult because everyone wants the same players."

Left back Matthew Briggs is close to joining Colchester United on loan and the deal could go through today.

That's the trouble we are in and our reputation when it states a number of targets have fallen through plus the wages we just can't get quality have to look around lower leagues for hidden gems they must be out there.

    Another midfielder!
What about a defender or two, or a centre forward?

      @SE11 Lion:
Agree, no sign of a decent forward yet. Holloway really does seem to be looking in the wrong positions.

@SE11 Lion: Agreed, but we do need another combative midfielder. We have too many jack-of-all-trades players in the likes of Woolford/Chaplow/Upson/Martinez and could do with releasing a couple of them at least. Specialists like Williams/Macdonald and Abdou play specific roles in the team and none of them are the tough tackling types, such as Austin (Leeds).

@glyngo: If he's a like for like replacement for Bailey all well and good, we've missed Bailey loads.
What I wouldn't give to turn the clock back and have Terry Hurlock in the side now, I don't think he'd be too pleased with a few of his team mates letting his and our beloved club down.
