Report: Blackpool 1-0 Millwall

MILLWALL'S season reached a new low after they were beaten 1-0 by bottom club Blackpool.

Peter Clarke headed the only goal of a scrappy game to suck the Lions further into the relegation battle.

The visitors bossed the second half and had 16 shots in total but far too few of them tested goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

Ian Holloway made three changes following last weekend's 3-3 draw with Bradford City in the third round of the FA Cup.

Andy Wilkinson was passed fit to return after a back injury, while loan signing Dan Harding made his debut at left back.

Martyn Woolford also came into the side as Millwall lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with ex-Blackpool striker Ricardo Fuller the lone frontman.

Three points were a must for the Lions but Blackpool made the better start.

In the second minute, Jimmy Abdou gave the ball away on the edge of the area but, to his relief, David Perkins' cross-shot went wide.

David Forde was then called into action to palm away Andrea Orlandi's bobbling drive before ex-Millwall loanee Jamie O'Hara blazed over from distance.

The Lions were slow out of the traps but almost went in front when Martyn Woolford's 23rd-minute header was hacked off the line by Clarke, with goalkeeper Joe Lewis beaten.

When the ball was crossed back into the box, Woolford stabbed it into the side netting before Scott McDonald was thwarted by Lewis as Millwall showed signs of life.

But Clarke headed Blackpool in front minutes later from a set piece.

The centre back didn't generate a lot of power on the ball but it somehow bounced beyond David Forde and into the far corner.

After a half-time grilling, Millwall upped the tempo in the second half.

McDonald almost teed up Lee Martin for the equaliser but the forward's square pass was slightly over-hit and the chance came to nothing.

Fuller was withdrawn after gesturing in frustration to the away fans and Stefan Maierhofer came on to make his second debut for the club.

And Maierhofer made an immediate impact, chesting down Andy Wilkinson's diagonal pass before rifling over on the half volley.

The Lions then had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Martin's cross struck a hand but play was waved on.

Millwall's best chance to get level came in the 75th minute when a ricochet presented Maierhofer with an open goal from a tight angle, but he blazed over.

The Austrian sent two looping headers wide of the target in the closing stages and substitute Lee Gregory fired beyond the far corner as more chances went begging.

But for all their territorial dominance, the Lions failed to sufficiently test Lewis in the Blackpool goal and his side saw out four additional minutes to claim the three points.

    Holloway- Fall on your sword.
    Ambler-Go and do one.
JB-Get our club sorted. Contrary to popular belief it is OUR club.
    We want OUR Millwall back.

@NICKOLA: Four dislikes - what planet are some of our fans on? Holloway and Ambler are both useless - the only thing they excel at is self promotion. And yes, Berylson needs to sort this mess out. Maybe if he spent more time in the country he'd realise just how awful the last three seasons have been.

And Aldo, please get rid of this 'Dislike' nonsense - too many planks are making it more and more like a Palace or Charlton site.

@Micky Lions: I think two of these dislikes are from Ollie and Ambler ! The other two are from a pair of w****** who haven't got anything better to do other than hope that we'll stay up. Got some news for them....aint going to happen unless there's an almighty change in SE14 Starting with the removal of the manager. After that, Warnock in for the end of the season to keep us up. Personally, I really and truly think I would do a better job than Ollie.

The starting line up was woeful (yet again). The whole backbone of the team is missing.
    Goalkeeper
    center back
    center midfield
    center forward
Urgent surgery required on this team & the right team selections needed or it's a visit to the likes of Gillingham,Colchester & Port vale next season.

Today is about as bad as it can get. Can see no positives Holloway is rinsing the players confidence with his tactical lunacy and inconsistent team selection. I for one was fine to allow him the transfer window in January but he is struggling to attract any more quality. He prides himself on his ability to convince players to join us however, one player who everybody wanted in Pringle he was unable to convince him to sign and with him at the helm I can't see any more progress.
I couldn't see anyway we would get relegated this season or even be down the bottom of the league but I think he could win me back just by making a marquee signing that breaks our ridiculously low transfer fee to show that he means business and prove that the club aren't just resigned to defeat.
    BTW SIGN A GOALSCORER......

@Hathrill17: what to leave him on the bench until we are 2 or 3 down . we had 2 goal scorers and when they came on Blackpool had to hold on. You cant win playing 5-4-1- with out class players. this division need 4-4-2- wingers putting crosses in, making goalkeepers make mistakes, long ball if necessary not pass, pass, pass it until they score the change to 4-4-2- .go now Holloway . And yes I will waste more money this season at the Den not because of you but because I love my Millwall and the humour of my fellow supporters

This smells all to much like the 2005/6 season and we all know how that one went. Took over 5 years to recover from that and again we are in complete disarray at the club from top to bottom. Too many players can't be bothered and don't want to be here, management is inept and the board are clueless. This is all going to end very badly. Do we stick with Olly and his terrible match day line-ups or do we send out another SOS and get Warnock in shake things up and try and save us for this season while the transfer window is still open...

I await another cliched response from IH.

Sad fact is that in these cases the manager has to take the blame and do one.

A likable guy in many ways, and that is what he has traded off for sometime.

Defeat at Bradford would finish him off imo. Sure the league is the big one but any remaining support he has will vanish if we are denied a trip to chelsea.

Its the same s*** every week and the same lame excuses time and again.

Great that IH helped us stay up last season but we need someone else to do likewise this time out.

we are now in a bigger mess than when Lomas was here. team selection, formation, everything is wrong. how can a team prepare for games when they dont have a clue who they will be playing along side or what formation it will be this week. this has all gone too far now, we are clearly the worst team in the div and we're going down. whats even more worrying is most of the squad out of contract (most of em rubbish anyway) and , wont give a to-- cos they wont be here. and we'll be skint! forget about league one we'll be in league two or out of business! if someone does'nt get a grip now. If Holloway has any feeling for this club like he says he has, he'll quit, not take the big pay off and give us some self respect back and a fighting chance of turning things around. Though i fear that will be from league one. GUTTED

His arrogance and vanity are a real threat to the future of this club.
I know it will cost us to get rid, but i would rather try to save ourselves with the squad we've got and another manager and spend the money on showing him the door.
If you love this club mr holloway, admit you have lost the plot and resign.

I think that's 11 wins in 47 league games and only one win by more than a single goal (Leeds first game this season). I've been Holloway's biggest critic on here from the day he was mentioned as a candidate for the job but even I couldn't have imagined things would get this bad. Even up until recently I was giving him more credit than he deserved by saying that he is probably just about a good enough manager to keep us up but that seems more and more like wishful thinking by the game. When does a managers position become untenable? He must be close?

He has to go now if we are to have any chance of staying up.

S.h.i.t C******.s the lot of em. When is jb gonna realise that this is not working ever since we come up we've gone from bad to worse and we show no ambition what so ever can't even beat our transfer record whilst s.h.i.t teams around us spending money they ain't got. We have a transfer I'm bar go next Jan so why not bite the bullet and really go for it now and make a statement of intent.
As for ih saying he wants "his" team on the pitch cause it ain't good enough well why the f.u.c.k. would you leave "your" players on the branch you C****** I'm sure your taking us for mugs and taking the p.i.s.s out of us
Please f.u.c.k off so we have a little glimmer of hope to get our club back
What a hateful bunch of C******.s every last one of you.
I want my wall back fed up of this s.h.i.t and it's only down to you jb to get it back
Oh I forgot fuller, p.i.s.s off you goby no good for nothing money grabbing C******

Oh well another sad day for the Lions, hey that's what it's like supporting the Wall isn't it ? I know it can be frustrating for us I've had it for a 50 stretch, but I reckon we will get out of this mess ! Now we are starting the rebuilding process. We could do with some support down the Den, don't get me wrong I'm not a Holloway fan, but I think that we have got some good players at the club, and looking at the table there's plenty of time left for things to start going our way. I suppose I will get slated for this but I'm to old in the tooth for that to get me at it. Belief is hard when things are going so wrong for us! I'm not gonna say think positive because I'll be coated. We at wall fans and have been treated badly over the years they the management think they are so millwall but in all honesty they are not they and don't really understand us and our love and commitment for our club. @lionrampant: This side is playing some of the worst football I have in fifty years of supporting Millwall, but I am in agreement with you.

Now is the time to be brave, get out of trouble and then have a good clear out

I have supported my club long enough, seen good and bad managers go, but Holloway is amongst the very worse. He lives a charmed life and should have been fired well before Christmas. Not only do we have a totally clueless manager we have an incompetent board willing to sit on their a***s and do nothing. Ambler only makes a comment when something is going well but remains silent the rest of the time. The coaching staff are useless, we have players picking up injuries constantly in training, donkeys have more brains than the scouting department, the club is now in deep crisis and it will take a miracle to get us out.
I feel for youngsters like Fred who must be wondering about their futures. JB must grasp the nettle and remove Holloway, every week he is there he causes more damage. If Holloway had any sense of pride he should resign this weekend.

can anyone tell me if any yes any of the board of directors are millwall fans, because none of the physio staff are.i know this fact as one of my younger brothers applied for the job and got it.was told the yearly wage he would receive which i am ashamed to say was a pittance,he asked all he met during working his time at the training ground.2 f***ing charlton fans working there no one else supported mfc but are happy to take our money,i think our board of directors and the ceo are all to blame for our sad demise as they control the purse strings and make all the decisions which affect the club.our chairman and the board lack ambition which has filtered through the whole club otherwise if they had shown real commitment we would have the right players would we not.and perhaps a more elevated position in the championship.if you have bland ingredients you make bland food.off to the kitchen.

I realised how bad it was ages ago, making Dunne Captain- but fully saw it at the end of September, I think that's when we were beaten by Birmingham. I clocked what Ollie was doing, playing a rotational squad formation, & just playing any player out of position, so it could fit into his 'track back' football. I saw him continue to favour players like Dunne, McDonald, Woolford/ Fuller- so you know what I did, I lay'd Millwall everygame on Betfair since then. I won 15 out of 17 games since, actually I laid them from a few before that-think it was after watching Ipswich, but only risked £250 a game. I won't let this deluded fool ruin my weekends anymore, I deserve some happiness! I've had my Millwall mates call me Judas, but now they are just copying me. Its beyond ridiculous.

He must go now, or take it from me, we wont just struggle in this league, we will struggle in League One. You think I am joking. He has no idea about why results have been so bad, and like a weak victim, he's continually looking at bad decisions, and not seeing the big picture. I hate to say it, but he looks like someone addicted to painkillers or medication, and he could have a full mental breakdown very soon, and no-one wants to see that. Someone should step in, he wont want to step away again like Palace, and remember he's in the friend circle of Jackett/Ambler/JB, so wont be sacked. It could all end very ugly. Its quite sad.

We all like Ollie, but someone needs to put an arm around him, and walk him out of the spotlight. If you think its bad now, you wait, and no I'm not a pessimist. I can just see that since 1990 we have been a 'kick and rush' team, with just scattered class across the pitch. This season our only class players are Edwards, Powell, Nelson, Maggie, Gregory & fit Martin/Chaplow. If you don't have class, you'll be found out eventually, especially if you even play these class players out of position. I'm going next home game to shout to get him out of my club.

I would like to especially thank the 'dislikers' of me on here, for making me so rich in the last 3 months- Thank You again.

to me it just goes to show that lucky gloves reg burr was the best chairman we ever had.the yank, and the rest are woefully short on ideas.true financial backingetc, remember mr holloway has not got a championship team to pick from in his undermined squad.his budget to buy must come from the board.or the sale of good players(HA HA HA ) on that one .our gates will not improve and under this bunch we are sliding towards div one.

ok this is how i view things i may be wrong. to me when holloway arrived we all had the view if we go down we go down que sera etc. we stayed up ny skin of our teeth and for some reason we now feel were gonna suddenly become premier league level it just doesnt happen to me if we go down this year i wont be happy but i feel like holloway does have a plan and the releasing of easter shows he wants to free up money to get better players i will be there every week wether its championship or league 1 and in my view holloway deserves time and i think it will pay off. forever a lion in holloway i trust

well we understand the sentiment john BUT what is to say IH can get more out of better players - he is not doing much for the current lot - it is my belief players are playing below their ability because of him - see Malone for one example - therefore regardless of who he gets in why will performances improve

Another week another mess. I want to see the kids get a run. They'll play without fear.. Get Fred and Goodman back and with Paris the team will feel fresh with a bit of hunger.
Gregory will benefit from the Hoff with him and it should be 4-4-2 all the way til the end of the season.
Ollie and the boys can still turn it round - theres still time. Our greatest weapon, as its always been - is making our crowd of 8,000 odd sound like 20,000 - this season, the noise from the stand is going to be the difference. If we shout down the players, we'll shout ourselves down to league 1. If we roar, no matter what -we'll have a chance. the fightbacks this season have been down to us. I was at the Boro game and I knew before kick off from the stands we'd get hammered - we were far too quiet at the off and their players grew in confidence and ours wilted. If we want to stay up, we better start sounding like it and be the 12th man - and make the den a cauldron. Theres some around me at the ground that need a slap - always on at our lads. always. shut the f up - its not easy supporting Millwall and if you're not up for it - stay home - you're not helping. Everyones frustrated but everyone - all of us - have a role to play. when i leave the ground my voice is hoarse.. is yours? thats how we'll turn it round.
Now lets have it!! COYL no surrender! Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

@munson68: yeah the chopping and changing is a nightmare.. what I'm saying is that we need to get behind the team and influence the result by supporting them. when the atmosphere turns toxic we have no chance of winning. The chance of a win are slim enough at the moment - lets not add to it. Totally with you on the lucky dip mess - the team sheets are unfathomable... buy I bring my little boys to the game.. I'm desperate for them to have what all their mates have supporting the Chelseas of this world - a team to be proud of... failing that, I at least want them to see that we've got the best fans in the world.
Ollie will be here til the end of the season - so as much as I dont like the formation and selections, it is what it is. Best we can do is make some noise.

@Mullwall: agree mullwall , i think ollie will be here end of season , i think the board like him, and i will carry on cheering the lions on, what worrys me the crowd is dropping week after week , he needs to be cute to bring in a player that fans can have as a focal point , and church is not that, prev managers have done it , like big mick done with witter, hurlock, came back, and when clarage came in , we need a leader and a focal point, timmy cahill ,would be a great signing but i dont think that will happen,

Many of you can't seem to see past holloway when it comes to these bad results, I'm surprised that many people haven't realised that this was always going to happen at this club since the season KJ left? Our structure/ financial structure is one of the poorest in the league and yes i am p***** off just as much as everyone else, but I believe that any manager in this seat would be getting these results and struggling like this. So no, i don't think we should change manager as this transition we are supposedly going through will just restart with a new manager, and the crap results will go on for longer. lets focus on survival for now

I agree with all the comments about IH. What potential signing during this transfer window ares going to come here after seeing this result. How many of the starting eleven were his signings? Why sign Webster when he is not even on the bench and he plays Dunne who is not even a first choice right back in his position? Why isn't Upson in the team?. I know some of his signings are injured or suspended but even if he makes more signings this month will he play them from the start of a match?. We need to win as many games as possible for the rest of the season to have a chance of staying up so even if he won't play a 4-4-2 formation please at least play 4-1-3-2 with TWO STRIKERS FROM THE START OF THE GAME AND NOT BRING ON A SECOND STRIKER AFTER WE ARE A GOAL BEHIND!!! ALSO PLAY THE SAME FORMATION AND PLAYERS FOR MORE THAN OE GAME AT A TIME!! Even though we only played one up front I thought he had finally picked his best team away to Bournemouth with the exception of Dunne at right back because I think Wilkinson was suspended.
