Stefan Maierhofer to re-join Millwall on short-term contract

STEFAN Maierhofer could re-join Millwall in time to play against Blackpool on Saturday after agreeing terms on a short-term contract.

Maierhofer, an integral part of the club's Championship survival last season, has accepted an offer to return to The Den until the summer.

The 6ft 7in giant will snub potential moves to Australia and the Middle East to come back to south London and be reunited with Ian Holloway.

When Maierhofer's first spell with the club came to an end last May, he priced himself out of a longer stay by asking for too much money.

The 32-year-old was without a club until November until he signed for Austrian club SC Wiener Neustadt.

But he has remained in regular contact with Holloway during the first five months of the season and a January transfer has now been agreed.

He is expected to fly into the UK on Thursday to complete the move.

As much as some people have slated the Hoff I think he could be a great signing. He will score the odd goal but more importantly I think he will be able to provide the flick ons and passes to Gregory that will result in Gregory starting to bang in the goals more often. This signing combined with the signing of cummings and another decent winger and we should hopefully start climbing the table. NOLU COYL!!

A good move if he can hit the ground running this time. We got the results we needed with him in the side at the end of last season. Now it's time for him to show us what he obviously thinks he is capable of. Give him a chance, I say.

I've been waiting for this article to appear on NAD. Since is was made clear we were interesting in re-signing him I've wanted him back. Most people probably think I'm mental but I like the bloke and I actually wanted him to stay in the summer.

Leave whatever happened in the past behind and get behind him. As a previous poster mentioned, he is match fit, remember that when he come to us previously without playing for 11 months!

Welcome back 'The Hoff' graft hard and grab some goals!

I am pretty chuffed about this. Hof is unfashionable but brings a vital option to the team that we are lacking. He done well last season and I was disappointed that we couldn't sign him the summer. We have to face facts, we are struggling big time and on current goalscoring form we are going to have to chance things up. Think we can expect a much more direct style of play and The Hof is perfect for that. He gives an outlet where we can pump long balls up to him with confidence that he will be first to them and the plan will be for Gregory and our midfielders to get on the end of his knockdowns and layoffs. Another option is a good thing, let's face it lads things are broken and they need fixing!!

A big plus to this is that he wants to play for us which is more than can be said for quite a few to put the shirt on this season. Hopefully that can lift everyone around him and get some confidence into the team because that is our biggest downfall at the moment.

People need to be realistic, we're not going to get anyone amazing with our wage cap, small crowds, relegation zone position and reputation, this is a good signing, finally we have a target man, all season we've complained about the lack of support for gregory and fuller, now holloway has signed a pacey winger to whip the balls in & a big c**t to knock them down for fuller and gregory & as we've got him cheap and short term, I think this is a smart bit of business.

He could be what we need up front and this time he should be more fit. And do remember that this is a deal for sixth month on Millwall terms not his. Should it turn out to be a bad signing he could be out the door in the summer. However leave what happened in the past and get on with it. Can hardly get worse than it is now.

I will now go to matches with a bit more hope, as fuller has done little to help gregory, now i have a feeling we will see just how good gregory is .
I still cannot believe the knocker's on NAD as he played a big part in keeping us up and he was only half fit
To all the knocker's on here ,i have recently highlighted the good points on here,so come on highlight his bad and i bet percentage wise he comes out on top.
So no statement's like he is useless ,unbelivable or the like, explain why you think he is not the man for millwall.

We are not going to sign up players who are scoring freely. Why would their current clubs want them to go? Be realistic. The best we are going to get are players with potential to score who may not be fitting in at their current club. That doesn't mean they won't click with us. IMHO the Hoff was a vital part of the escape plan last season, adding another dimension to the side. No reason why he can't do that again. Playing next to Gregory he could do well. As for those critics who have commented on his refusal to sign up in the summer, wouldn't we all (and haven't we) tried to get the best deal out of an employer? As long as he does it on the pitch I couldn't give a t*** about what happened last summer.

The thing I find so frustrating with the transfer targets, is that we're looking after the same old s*** again and again! It's really unimaginative! Church was linked back with Jackett and thankfully he turned us down for the train spotters. Hoff although effective isn't a step up, and was with us last season. Cummings was also linked with us in the past although I can't remember whether it was under Lomas or Holloway. Surely there is better out there than the Hoff and Church! Isn't there a better and cheaper options in the lower leagues? What have Harford and the rest of the other scouts been doing the last few months other than having holidays to France? The incompetence in finding a player is shocking. How is it that we never make a profit on players but teams of the same stature seem to do it with ease. We'll never progress unless a proper policy is put in place which is beneficial to us. How much did we sign Malone for originally? it sure as f*** was more than 100k! 750k + McQuoid if I remember right. Frustrating to say the least.

it gives us an option of long ball play we don't have - he is neither useless nor great - get things in perspecvtive - we cannot afford anything more - we could get lucky on a loan of a kid from the prem but i don't see why we cant do that aswell

how can we score less goals with him - these players are constantly underrated - peter crouch has done a great job at stoke - you need a way in when teams go defensive - I can see it - Paris up to Hof and knock down to Church - 1-0

I thought the last thing a struggling team needs is a billy big bollocxs but I suppose we have to trust in IH.

Physically this guy has some potential. I'm a big fan of the crash forward but wonder if this guy has the minerals to bother defenders in this league. Champion football is a lot more physical than the stuff I've seen in the Austrian league.

I cannot believe that some Millwall fans think this guy is some sort of panacea to the clubs problems. Don't they remember the likes of Teddy Sheringham or Tony Cascarino? Compared to them this guy is an also ran. The proof will be in the pudding over the next few weeks. Why is it no other League club wants him? This is not building for the future just an attempt at filling the holes in a sinking ship.
No doubt all the mysterious IH lovers will disagree. I hope he proves me wrong but someone with a lot more pace and clout is required.

Despite his over ambitious beliefs (premier league player?) you cannot complain about his passion and effort he put in. From watching him last season he tried his hardest despite his physical and, at the time, fitness, flaws. We look like we are in the same situation as last year so Not a bad signing imo

Of the realistic options available to us, I'm not too unhappy to see the Hof back.

For me , he was a major factor in us staying up last season. He offers a lot in my opinion.
He's 6ft 7" so clearly 100 meters in sub 10 seconds is out the question but he's handy on the floor and very awkward to challenge and defend against in the air.
Play to his strengths and we'll A , stay up and B , he'll contribute with assists and goals.

@Adsy77777: no worries mate. Bob peeters reckons CHURCH will not be joining us and will stay with charlton until the end of the season. Seems to me he should just stay there then and jog him on

5 things weve learned about our club since jan 1st
    1,NO AMBITION
    2,NO HOPE
    3,NO DECENT STRIKERS
    4.NO DECENT SCOUT
5, NO HOPE OF STAYING UP.
This bloke is nothing but a donkey, i watched him alot hes only good in the air just, here comes the long ball game we might aswell not have a midfield, fordey will be in his element hoofing it all day bypassing the midfield, ffs go get a decent proven striker pay the money !!!!!, with this bloke & possibly church we are doomed !!!, remember this greedy git tried to out bid us & wanted to go to fulham, they obviuosly saw what we can`t & bought mcormack from leeds, even brentford with gates of 8,000 have better players than us it really pee`s me off

@mfcjon: you sure , as fans of millwall we have to hope of staying up , or whats the point , we have to back ollie , NOTS HIS BIGGEST FAN , but he has told us he will give us a better group , and i for one applaud him all ready ,
      EASTER GONE ,
      JOSH WRIGHT
MARQUIS OUT ON LOAN, MALONE GONE , HIS HEAD WAS TURNED
he has brought in a decent winger , a full back in harding who knows about winning games and is a good full back , hoff will get us points like last season , ollie will bring more players in , and i think we should back him , KEEP GOING OLLIE I AM BEHIND U

You can't compair millwall with BRENTFORD as they have millionaire backers, sort of a poor mans chelski slinging money in. Come on HOFF prove em all wrong..

I actually think this could work out in the short term. Gregory is crying out for a partner up front to feed off, one thing we didn't have during the Hof's last spell here was a goalscorer playing off his hold-up play so this could be a good combination. With a pacey wide man already signed in PCH and hopefully another on the way in Cummings we might finally find the more traditional formation we've been crying out for?

Is it me or has the club not got any money. Why are we going for church when there is way better strikers out there I don't mind the Hoff he will cause a lot of problems because it his height. What happened to that 25 man striker list that we was looking at , afobe , Doyle , Sears , Reid , garner , Hanson , smith etc we should be going for one of this strikers especially afobe , smith , Doyle or Hanson. We can at least afford one of them

@boblion: Relative to other clubs in our league the answer is probably no. We've always made do with signings like this - probably not what we want but the strikers you mention are out of our price range in as much other areas of the team also need strengthening. The Hoff is probably short term but if between he, Gregory and Fuller they can score around 15 goals, that might just be enough to keep us up. Sorry in a way that Easter has gone - has never had a consistent run; we now need to look to Aiden O'Brien for game time when possible as next season in whatever league, he must be up there with Gregory.

When we played birmingham 2-0 down IH brought on o'brien i thought they looked good together, they started to pull the brum defence apart and linked well for our goal, good assist by o'brien and well taken goal by gregory,we were looking good for at least a draw untill our defence let us down yet again.
I cannot understand why IH did not play them together more often, rather than opt for the more static option of Fuller.

I don't know where I am anymore, I haven't sl**ged off Holloway anymore because I think the club is gonna stick with him anyway so therefore I need to back the team no matter what.
However this boy says he's doing one for better things, falls on his a**e and comes begging back and you lot all go this is great?? No it ain't it shows how poor a state we really are in!! This is where we are after all the speculation this is the only one that gets us up?? I'd of loved him to come on here and say what he was saying at the end of last year about moving on to bigger things and the Dislike Mongs could have had a field day.. But no your all loving it now...Throw a CHARLTON RESERVE in as-well?? F**king honestly?? cant do it no more. Good wishes to all the real Millwall on this site but for me I'm done. i'l just keep spending a fortune every month to drag my a*** from cornwall to watch the boys, the team and the club which hopefully will keep going for years after I'm gone,
And for all the Hollaway lovers, He said not me He'll get young players bring em on, get a good sell on fee Blah,Blah.Blah . A 31yr old Forest boy and the Hoff don't really add up??

If what you wrote is how you feel then why would dislikes bother you? Stand by your opinions because that is exactly what it is.... YOURS. This place is in danger of becoming a family friendly/needy/watered down/sanitised arena.

Maierhoffer is a joker and a tourist but brings things to the team that we need. His size and ability to deliver the ball around him is very good. At set pieces he drags so many defenders on him that he frees loads of space for the rest of our chaps. As long as they didn't pay too much for him this is a good move. Besides, which decent striker would come to Millwall at the moment anyway?

You say he is a joker, then go on to say all good thing's about him and the very reason's why we should have signed him.
I cannot understand what point you are trying to make, maybe it's me but his size ,ability to receive the ball that is put him ,dragging defender's out of position and freeing up space for other's are the very reason's that i want him at the den, also we know he can do it,because he did it last season when helping to keep us up.
Then why is he a joker?

@jim1222: Maierhoffer's career is full of gaps and his fitness and work ethic have not been great. His demands for more money in the summer were unrealistic as were his dreams of playing for a bigger club. Under other circumstances I wouldn't want him back nor is he an investment for the future of our club. However he does have skill which we desperately lack so I think signing him is a good move under the current circumstances. I hope this makes more sense.
