Cardiff still keen on January deal for Millwall defender

CARDIFF City remain keen on a January deal for Millwall left back Scott Malone.

NewsAtDen revealed in November that Malone was on the radar of Bluebirds boss Russell Slade. Crystal Palace have also scouted the 23-year-old this season.

Blackburn were monitoring his situation too but have been placed under an embargo.

Cardiff, though, could be the first club to follow through on their interest when the transfer window opens in the New Year.

Malone's deal at The Den expires in the summer and an extension has not been discussed, so he would only command a nominal fee if he did leave.

Asked about interest in his players, Ian Holloway said: "I wish my phone was ringing off the hook because then you've got some swaps you could make, but it certainly isn't."

On Malone, he added: "I've had a lot of thoughts about Malone, not just to do with January.

"Why did he choose that pass? That was a good one, or that was a bad one. What about his hip?

"He's trying to play through a slight problem and he's having a scan this afternoon. After he's played, it locks up and that's pretty unusual. We'll get to the bottom of it."

Doesn't sound like we can even try selling him January if he's carrying a mysterious injury......

@steveomfc5: His hip may explain why he has not been as good as last season...so we are scouting in France for a left back as oppossed to a striker then...the plot thickens (much like the bullplop that comes out of IH mouth after every loss!!)

yes his form has dipped - he took some bad shots against Bolton and isn't as mobile or quick as he was - I don't understand why when this injury is knowledge why Cardiff would be interested

@timchimes: I'm under the impression that Cardiff might be stocking up on the leagues best players before the ffp kicks in, especially if they are young and have potential. But I'm not the Cardiff manager, so these are only my opinions.

One of our few really exciting players when he's in full flight, hasn't been near his best this season. We really will need two wingers if he goes, though, because most games this year he's been the only player offering any width at all.

i am unsure on malone probably our quickest player and attacking wise is very good his final ball is suspect ,:defensively naive bt with fk all help from the midfield he gets exposed. Me personally i would keep him as he is still very young

I hope we don't lose Malone he is a pretty decent player at Championship level, I bet we don't get much for him either as his contract is nearing its end. If he does go it will just be another player in a long list that we have lost on the cheap!

@block 28: @block 28: couldn't agree more mate. I don't see how people can says he's one of the best if they watch the games. Positionally he's awful and lacks awareness of whose around him, can't pass in the final third and doesn't want to take anyone on. Most of which I'm sure is to do with madcap manager tactics. Bolton and Brighton he was oprobably our worst player. It shows how poor our team is when people think he's brilliant.

In total agreement with both of you. If Malone never pulled on a Millwall shirt ever again, it would be the best Christmas present ever.
He has no positional sense, no football sense, he cannot defend, he cannot tackle, so why oh why all the praise from some supporters.
Cardiff manager has a good track record in signing Millwall players, Lowry, Wright, Batt and a few others !!!!
Lets get some money in now, and/ or do a deal with Cardiff to take one of theirs
Briggs at left back will do for me, a far better defender than Malone will ever be, which is what we need. With a defender who can defend, our left wing back will not have to drop so deep to cover for a non existent left back, giving us more options going forward, and the left sided CB can concentrate on his job rather than covering the LB position

Its interesting that Jackett signed him but he never featured in any games while he was Manager. I think this is because he realised his defensive weakness. He is very good going forward but last season in particular he left us very exposed on that side of the pitch and Woolford often tried to cover for him. He would be much effective playing for a team where the defensive set up allowed him to operate as a wing back.

@denslions: He is young enough to be retrained into a winger and get a player who is more adept to playing as a left back...he has potential and should be nurtured and guided. This also depends on whether he wants to stay and whether management want him.

@dpendet: They leave everything to the last minute and by then other clubs are sniffing round with improved offers, they need to get in quicker but they drag their heels over every transaction, and with the ultra decisive Holloway in charge things are not going to improve. With the crap ones I can only think that the club were preparing for the drop and wanted to cut the wage bill and fill the team with cheap div 1/2 players. It's all a total cock up.

Although I said in an earlier post that I thought we should cash in on Malone I was thinking of a reasonable fee but this nominal fee nonsense just means we lose yet another of our more promising players for a bag of peanuts. Everyone seems to take us for mugs, nicking our better players for nothing whilst unloading their expensive dross onto us. Sort it out Millwall stop being taken for a bunch of c's

He does not want to be at Millwall, or he would had signed longer term with us. I hate hearing about players getting a better deal elsewhere. sign with us now or get lost now. Tell us about players like Forde, Shiitu, players who want to pull that shirt on. If we going down this season start playing some youth, they would give everything. A fighting team not wage cheats. If Malone goes good luck to him but please don't make him sound like a very talented player he just a championship player, and I cant see him getting any better. Anyway Holloway will probably play Dunne there LOL. Anyway to keep his captain in the team.

    Strange comments by ollie.
You either want him or you don't
Pointless trying mind games with potential customers by talking about a hip injury cause you'll probably put off any potential buyers and be left with an unhappy player who'll end up disrupting the rest of the squad.
If you want him extend his contract if you don't then let the other clubs medical department find out for themselves.

Get rid of the crap ie mcDoald Fuller Dunne Easter all over the 30 totally useless bring nothing to wall Dunne been a good servant but his best is behind him, the rest payday Robin hoods bleeding us dry
Look to the youth with potential get em signed up and settled and splash the cash on 2 decent wingers and a proven goal scorer . Stop F .....g with the team unless injury prevents this and get down to playing football and produce a second half of the season that resembles Millwall in mind body and fighting spirit
Sick of reading all the Crap that every player and IH comes out with just do the business on the pitch we can then see the evidence you won't need to publish anymore excuses
Get on with it Wall Lions or Pusses you choose what you want to be seen as ????????

I still think Malone is one of our better players, but if Briggs really was ready to step up, wouldn't he be playing already? and Ollie mentioning Malone's injury is either a cunning way of putting potential buyers off, or the worst possible way to get a good price. If Malone does go, that means we are light at left back, not a good situation either. I say keep him, he holds the place in the first team currently, so must be the favoured player.
