Jamaica plot international recall for Millwall striker Fuller

MILLWALL striker Ricardo Fuller could be faced with a dilemma if he is recalled to the Jamaican national team later this season.

Reggae Boyz coach Winfried Schäfer wants to bring Fuller back into the fold and intends to name the striker in his next squad.

Fuller, who was raised in Tivoli Gardens, Kingston, has scored nine goals in 73 appearances for his country but has not be involved in recent fixtures.

And the 34-year-old is unsure whether travelling to the Caribbean for matches would be detrimental to his club career.

Lions manager Ian Holloway told the Southwark News: "Jamaica might want to call him up soon and I've had a chat with their national team manager about that.

"I think they saw him come off the bench and score those two brilliant goals against Wolves the other week, and now he's in their thoughts again.

"All that flying might not be good for him and I think Ric himself knows that. He is not ready to fly over there just to come off the bench and play 20 minutes.

"Fuller is gradually getting fitter and fitter and with him, Lee Gregory and Lee Martin up front, we've got a good balance to our forward line at the minute."

    If fitness/inuries is his issue, he has a very simple decision to make, prioritise club career and prolong it.

      @glyngo: If he turns out for Jamaica and club, then we shouldn't hear any more excuses about giving him rest to recover.

    As an American, I sadly am going to say they will call him up for a few reasons. 1. Jamaica will be in qualifying for the Gold Cup (Euros for CONCACAF) during this break. 2. The squad has to play up to 4 matches in 7 days, and will need plenty of subs (Yes our qualification system is s****). 3. This qualifying tournament doesn't really require Jamaica to bring their best squad, and may look down the line at a fringe player like Fuller. All they have to do is finish top 2 in a 4 man group and they advance to the main tournament this summer.

      @Rusty:

      I'm Jamaican and I'm a big Fuller fan. Let me correct you on a couple points. Jamaica only has to finish in the top 4 to qualify for the Gold Cup. We failed to qualify last time because we underestimated the other teams and fielded a weak squad made up of local based and MLS players. This year we can't afford to take any chances. Fuller is still regarded as one of our best strikers and would be asset in this tournament even if he is used as a sub. We've also invited other UK players like WesMorgan (Leicester City) and Adrian Mariappa(Crystal Palace) this time around.

        Fuller didn't appear during the 2014 WCQ for Jamaica, he can't be one of the best strikers, at least in the managers mind. As for the Carib Cup, just gotta finish top 2 out of yourselves, Martinique, Haiti and Antigua and Barbuda and you qualify for the Gold Cup. Granted 2 of those 3 sides made the 2013 Cup, you really should be fine to qualify
