Ex-Stoke winger Matthew Etherington training with Millwall

FREE agent Matthew Etherington was at Millwall's training ground this morning ahead of a trial stint with the club.

NewsAtDen revealed last month that the ex-Stoke City winger was a player on manager Ian Holloway's radar as he looks to strengthen his wide options.

The Lions have also run the rule over Jermaine Pennant and Chris Eagles in recent weeks.

But this is the first time Etherington has been given a chance to impress. The midfielder has been without a club since leaving the Potters in the summer.

It is understood the 33-year-old's agent reached out to Holloway ten days ago to request a trial and he has now been offered the chance to win a deal.

Too old for my liking, willing to give him a chance but would much prefer a young eager winger from the premier league

@Millwall1994: hang on I'm 34 years old, weeks away from being match fit and lost my killer first touch, can I get a trial?! ⚽️ Tell you what, I would pay for the opportunity and bring down my samsung flat screen for the scoreboard/highlights. Come on Oli I'm reaching out with both arms !!!

So if we sign him i take it he won't be match fit and will need a couple of months to get fit (like some of our other signings). I don't see the point,we need people that can make an immediate impact.

Personally I think we need someone who can play wide right naturally..... pretty sure Etherington is a lefty! and at 33 I doubt he'll make much difference, might be a good head to have around the training ground, isn't Lee Martin back in training now anyway?!

Does Ethringtonreally wanna play for the club or be another wage thief? I am sure he has seen our track record and thought 'hmmm could use a few quid before I retire and go into retirement limbo!!'. All I can say is of all the players we have had that have been of this age only 2 were good enough to warrant a contract; Edwards and Claridge, so I am sceptical

Dont understand Ollies thinking on all these past there sell by date players, all looking for one last pay day, if as he says he loves it here and wants to building then signing a 33 year old possibly on 5 to 10 thousand a week is not the way forward.
Get scouting and find gem or two in our catchment area and also further afield like other teams do, and rather than waste money on the three players that were mentioned in this article Ollie can try to bring on a couple of the under 21 lads. I am sure we would all support that way of going forward for the team, its a gamble but so would be raising the avarage age of the squad by serveral years each time he signs a player who is 30 plus not fit and gets injuried stright away.

@Millwallpad: Exactly. Give our own players a chance - and spend the money we save on repairing the big screen. Everyone's happy.

FFS!!! ok he was once a good player, like 5 or 6 years ago. but yet again we're going for 30+ yr old players! wtf is the logic in that? look at clubs higher up the table they have tapped into the young prem players for loan deals and they are the sorts of players we need to keep us up and head towards a playoff spot! if we keep aiming for has beens we will get results to reflect that imho. we need to start tapping into our own youth system rather than f****** about with these oldies.

I keep hearing 'Keeping their fitness up' and '3 Matches in a week is tiring', I assumed some of these guys are meant to be professionals! Surely if your 'Out of Contract' and looking for a Club, you should be keeping yourself bloody fit anyway, and as for being tired! What about Proffessional cyclists on the 'Tour' their doing 4-6 hours a day in the Saddle for upto 3 weeks, with only 2-3 'Rest Days', that's being fit! I know it's 2 totally different sports, but I would still put either Bradley Wiggins or the Sprinter Mark Cavendish, who are completely different builds to come out on top on general fitness levels!

Didn't Holloway promise to reduce the average age of the squad when he took over? We might even have gone the other way since then. Although, to his credit, he has given starts to the youngsters this season.

I suspect that the overall strategy is to wait until next season to make them full first teamers. The way in which Fred Onyedinma and Jack Powell have been dropped so readily suggests that Holloway doesn't think that they are ready just yet. We have something like 17 players out of contract next summer, so there's an opportunity to rebuild the squad then. A generous interpretation of the club's transfer strategy would be that Etherington, etc. are a stop-gap until that point. And I would be disappointed if we don't bring in younger players from the academy and lower-league teams as part of that.

In the mean time, we've got to accept that this another transitional season. Last season should have been that, but Lomas and the board ballsed it up big time. I just hope that a transitional squad is good enough to keep us up. We should be in a much stronger position next season if we do.

This only makes sense if we have a more long term target in mind who we cant sign right away, therefore plug the gap with a journeyman who will do a job for a few months. Injuries are a concern though, players over 30 that aren't match fit seem so fragile in this league.

Must admit that every one of our home grown youngsters who have played this season has at worst been as good as the rest and at best MOM. I think I would hold my nerve and continue to play the youngsters with the likes of Fuller, Dunny, McDonald etc accept a mid league position ready for a push next year with now experienced young home grown talent. BUT it also up to us fans to give the team a chance and we can see from the reaction on this site what a poor run can do to the mood around the club. If we keep cheering, and as long as the team keep trying I am sure mid table is a realistic position.

@lennie the lion: I would agree with that, consoladateour league position and bring on the young ones gradually and maybe one or two could become decent first team players, 1 it could return a profit either if sold or we as a club do well 2, I am sure we would all like to see home growen talent palying for the Wall.

@lennie the lion: I said similar a week or so ago Lennie. If the youngsters play well keep.them in and give them a break when/if their form dips. Up to the senior pro's to win their place back.

@DiggerWall: Well said, he might even compliment Fuller as they've played together before. You don't know unless you try and we aint going to go anywhere quick without experience. If he don't play he aint good enough and we don't lose out. Just look at Edwards he put most of our team to shame and he wasn't as well known as Etherington. Worth a go on trial at least. Stop being so doom and gloomy at least a problem is trying to be fixed and not getting ignored. NOLU WDC

The last thing we need is another pensioner looking to nick a few bob before he is put out to pasture. If I remember correctly, we tried to sign him some time ago he didn't want to come then , so whats changed. We need young hungry players, who are trying to impress their parent clubs.

This is ridiculous. Another 30 plus player who isn't going to last more than one game or will be unfit to the nth degree upon arrival. Bit like Angel. It's all well and good bringing players in that we need in certain positions and that have neen on Ollie's radar but the money is surely better spent on the forward line ie. Pope. If his agent has contacted Millwallthen with all due respect to us all, he'sprobably done the rounds and has seen the likes of Pennant and Eagles being given the opportunity of getting a a first team birth. free fitness training and then walk away.
    WE NEED A STRIKER.
    2 UP FRONT.

From what I've seen of him playing for us Fred is a quality player so why not use him ? save some money and buy a striker
