Millwall boss fumes at "poor" display at Huddersfield

IAN Holloway fumed at Millwall's worst display of the season so far after a 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Lions boss claimed his side were "unrecognisable" from recent matches and promised to make changes to his starting XI for Birmingham's visit to The Den in midweek.

Two goals from Nahki Wells – the second of which came from the penalty spot after Nicky Bailey's trip on Harry Bunn – condemned the visitors to a deserved loss.

Holloway refused to attribute the result to the referee's match-changing decision and chose instead to criticise Millwall's wayward passing.

"It was a penalty because the referee gave it," he said.

"I was disappointed with our overall game. That's as poor as I've seen us – we didn't look like the same players.

"We've got to get back on the bus and win on Tuesday because the more I say about that game the more annoyed I'm going to get because that didn't look like my team.

"I switched Ed Upson and Scott McDonald, I moved Abdou and I moved Williams. I think I moved one player too many around and we didn't have any ebb and flow.

"We lacked a little bit of legs here because one or two people have been out for a while.

"That was as poor as we've been – it's very, very disappointing.

"I had a passing team out there who couldn't pass it. I want to forget that game because it was awful.

"We needed three or four of our players to get a grip of the game and do something that gets everybody going but not one of my players had a half-decent game.

"We had a good start to the season but now we've ruined it."

Millwall were right in the game at the halfway stage after Ed Upson's first goal for the club had cancelled out Wells' opener.

But Holloway said the Lions fell away in the second half.

"We've been passing it crisply and neatly and there were opportunities to open them up," he said. "We knew where the space would be and didn't exploit it.

"Chris Powell threw us a bit of a curveball by playing 3-5-2. We hadn't prepared to play against them like that. We thought they would be 4-3-3.

"But even with two up front, I felt we were comfortable.

"It's really difficult for me to talk about this because that didn't look like my team.

"The players have been playing so well for the last however many months but they couldn't pass it and they made the wrong decisions.

"The crowd was very flat as well – it really was a quiet atmosphere and it's not usually like that here. I don't think anybody mustered anything until they scored.

"It was a long ball forward, which we should be able to deal with, it's dropped to Wells and he's smashed it in – a fantastic strike out of nothing.

"We've then gone and scored the best goal we've scored all season – it was a great move and a great finish – and I was then waiting for that to ignite us but it didn't.

"I couldn't wait to get in at half time to say what I said but we got worse after that.

"The whole game was pretty dire – as poor a game as I've seen. We didn't move the ball quickly enough or play our patterns. Williams and Bailey were trying to do the same job.

"We're crying out for someone who can run with the ball like Lee Martin does – I haven't really got anybody else like that yet."

Asked whether he would make changes to his line up on Tuesday night, Holloway added:

"Do you think anybody is safe in there? Our level of performance dropped way below what we've been producing recently."

@lions404: If Gregory does not get his chance on Tuesday he probably never will. After weeks of seeing missed opportunities and nothing creative in the last third, we just need someone who knows where the back of the net is! GIVE GREGORY A CHANCE - let's hope he still believes in himself after being sat on the sidelines watching others miss the goal!

Ive got a great idea, lets take a team that did so well against forest, change it all around and put players in different positions just to really confuse them. The leave a young hungry striker on the bench!!! Priceless. In the words of danny shittu, 'its what we doooo'

@Geoff the lion: you hit that nail on the head!!! Nothing like a settled side to instill some confidence and with due respect, unless it's a real bad injury, man up and play through some pain.

@Geoff the lion: I was actually going to post virtually the same message. What is this obsession with never keeping a settled team. Get your best 11 and play them. If there are injuries then you have to change but don't change just to keep players happy. How the f**k are they supposed to understand a new formation or combination every time they kick off. Rant over! (much like our season).

I'd have thought Ollie would know his best team by now, but it's as all-over the place as last year.

The end of last season/start in August was great - we seemed to build up some real momentum. But since that Fulham win we don't seem too far off what we had under Lomas.

    2 things about today:-
    1) Nicky Bailey is now fit and walks straight into the team (and gives away a pen). Now I know I'm going to get a 100 dislikes for this (no one likes me I don't really give a t***) but he hasn't really done it in my eyes and owes us a dozen or so performances. I think this season he either gets with it or gets out!!
    2) I have only got one thing to say to Ollie and that is:-
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
    GET A FCUKING STRIKER IN!
Oh I've said that six times not just once, silly me.................

If we're really honest about it we haven't got any real decent players at this level. It's about the best it is going to get for us, we just haven't got the resources to sign players that will make a real difference. As for a goalscorer they don't come cheap, so we're just going to get on with it with what we have. Hopefully Gregory will get his chance against Birmingham and a run in the side and prove to be another Harris.

Just got back, and I hate to say it but that was a performance straight out of the Lomas days. Clueless, toothless, spineless.

A couple of things summed it up:

Fuller - out of 9 balls there to be headed, he won none, beaten every time and yet we persisted with him for 70 mins.

We had a free kick just inside their half in the 2nd half and played it back into our own half and ended up having to defend a Huddersfield attack from it after losing possession.

The players looked disinterested at times, confused often and we were easily beaten by a pretty poor Huddersfield team.

The problem is, even with a 30 goal a season striker in that team we'd struggle because we're not creating anything in the final third.

On one of the few times we decided to simply go wide and whip the ball in rather than try to pass our way through the middle and a crowd of Huddersfield defenders, we scored.

Another worrying sign is the lack of discipline and amount of silly fouls we've started giving away.

Hope that was a bad day at the office but some very worrying signs out there today.

I said it last week, wrong players, wrong positions, same old IH saying he got it wrong. If he is fuming then pick the players who are on the bench and are clearly better, we can all see it so why cant he. Of course I hope we turn it around but with him in charge I don't see it.

    This time last year
    11 points
    9 goals for
    14 against

    Current form
    11 points
    9 goals for
    10 against

We were calling for Lomas' s head this time last year. For all the circus goings on, don't look like much has changed. I like Ollie, but my Blackpool, Palace and Plymouth mates warned me about him and his antics. No plan B, too many players on the books causing financial concerns and the worrying trait of subbing 3 on a time in desperation, causing upset on the pitch and confusion in tactics.
We currently have one of the biggest squads in the Championship and by my reckoning have used the most players this season. There is no real first 11.
Watched today's game and was gutted by how quickly we have reverted to playing in a defeated way. We have some quality players, who either get played out of place or mystifyingly don't get played at all. Meanwhile we have some absoloute oxygen thiefs who get game time and prove (yet again), that they should do one and get the hell away from my beloved wall.
Hoyte, please just go. Bailey, I know you're just back, but I never rated you and you're lumbering about style of play. Not quick enough and gets frustrated too quickly, hence giving away a needless penalty. Fuller....full of. Ranegie...go away.
Please Ollie, stop playing this crazy formation and get two strikers up front. Gregory and Gueye.
If this rot continues, you might find yourself in the same place as your predecessor. You will find that our patience wears thin quickly, when we think someone's taking the p**s.
    Rant over.

what did the Blackpool guy tell you-that he got them promoted and nearly kept them up

look where Blackpool are now - yes we can all see our weaknesses and limitations and IH does unusual things - it is too early for all this doom and gloom - why can't people keep things in perspective

Just cause we play well in very small patches during the odd game people say we are playing well, more rubbish. Its not doom and gloom its seeing the bleeding obvious and being p.issed off that nothing is being done about it.

mate, I am keeping things in perspective. As I pointed out, we are no different than we were last year, other than we play more passing. Still too many players on the books who don't get game time, or spend most of the season injured. No plan B. Different players in different positions almost every game. No different than this time last year. As I already said, we were pretty much all after Lomas's blood around now. Ollie doesn't get a free pass just because he's a bit of a character.
As for listening to my mates, they all have better knowledge of Ollie and his ways, havinghad himfor longer than us. They all say that yes, he is funny and yes, he is passionate, but they also said that he is not the master tactician he would have everyone believe. That he plays the same system week in, week out, with no real change, other than when he throws subs on like confetti in desperation and then the formation goes to rat sh*t, as no one really knows their position. They also said that when the funny man routine gets boring and repetetive, that whats left is a man possibly out of his depth and making up for it with a shed load of bravado.
I like Ollie and I hope he proves me wrong and makes the den his home and a fortress again. But that won't happen if he continues the way he has started this season. And no, its never too early for doom and gloom!

Spot on. People are too forgetful, the same people saying how s*** we are, were all saying how good we are and how we are going to make the play offs etc. Some people however realise what Millwall is all about and we have had this every season apart from a few ever since I've been going (25 years or so). We win some we lose some, we beat the good teams, lose to the s***. We lose to teams who haven't won in 10 games, we win away at the so called big sides in our league. Some weeks we look like we are a really good team, the next week we look dog s***. We will be mid/lower end of the table this season. Get used to it if your not already. It'll make your Saturday nights a lot less stressful.

@timchimes: Sounds like a bad day at the office today - haven't been able to make the last couple of games as been away on work - but MOST of what I can see from the analysis of the last few games has been positive and we were the better team and created more chances against arguably the 2 best teams in the division in Reading and Forest.

One thing I would like to add to this conversation is the fact that we've lost 2 of our best players in Martin and Edwards during this tough group of fixtures (not that there are any particularly easy fixtures in this league...) Martin brought pace and creativity to the frontline - and was apparently the best long distance runner in the squad... While Edwards, also brought pace, composure, skill and experience to the back line...
As we haven't got a PROLIFIC goalscorer at this time - we've been relying on our build up play and getting goals from EVERY part of the field... You take 2 influential players like these OUT of ANY squad - and bring IN players that have just come back from injury or are inexperienced - there is going to be a difference in form... Not the 'be all and end all' for sure - but just saying..
We MUST be patient - this is a blip in form - but for good reasons. FFS let's not start trying to get IH out just yet...

As for bailey wot an idiot first you give away a stupid penalty then nearly got yourself sent off for gobbing off. That is the worst we've played & now you've got a worse record than the thing. "Chris Powell gave us a bit of a curveball by playing 2 upfront" ... ffs! Why did bailey walk back into the team? Why don't you play Gregory up front with a strike partner like O'brien?
It's going to be a struggle this season without playing a prolific goal scorer - we have signed one and he needs to play.

Why have Waster and Ranegie been given game time?

Can't go Tuesday but saw both Birmingham games last season which were woeful.

Why do Millwall always put an end to oppo's winless runs? Birmingham, Blackpool last season. Huddersfield today?

    fumes at poor display...........!!!!!!!

What the f**K does he think we do.....??? and he is the one making the decisions....

I was pleased last year when he was appointed, thought he would get us playing better. Seems he is trying to get us to play like the prem clubs on a league 2 budget.....isn't going to work.

Im a strong believer of playing with what you have and getting them to work together. If you keep playing a different starting 11, in different positions each week then of course we are going to look like sh1t on the pitch. I bet as the boys turn up the only one who know hes playing in the same position as the last game is Forde.........WHAT a JOKE..........

    Things to take forward.....
    1. Play 2 up front, We don't have the players to get away with 1 up front.
    2. make one of those 2 Gregory.....he knows where the goal is....he might not score 30 goals this season but I bet he scores some.
    3. play players in the same position 2 weeks in a row, it WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
    4. and this is a LONG SHOT............GO GET A decent striker, There are plenty sitting on the bence or not even getting picked in the Premiership so lets go get ourselves one for a few months of until the end of the season.....Hate to say it but Chris Woods would still be the pick for me....hes not playing at Leicester and must be getting frustrated keeping the bench warm.

Come IH, somebody must tell you we all think the same as fans. I just hope your head isn't to far up your own a*** to accept that some times the fans are actually right....

In over 100 yrs we have been in the top flight for two seasons.
People praise JB for keeping the club afloat, perhaps justifiably, but untill there is a real revolution at the club and someone pumps in some real money, we are probably punching above our weight even being in the championship....(is the record signing still Paul Goddard....footballing giants like Rotherham offer players better terms).
I appreciate there are those on here who try to build expectations and 'big up' the the players especially the young-uns....truth is not one of our team would make it into the teams of those that will seriously challenge for promotion. I saw every game the first year we were in the top flight and only missed a couple the next season I dont expect to see it again any time soon.....however in the last ten years I have been to Cardiff, Hungary, and Wembley three times ..... alot more than most clubs have acchieved, and their fans still turn up.
We had a couple of good results at the start of the season, but I remain realistic .....4Th from bottom is a safer expectation this season than 4th from top.

Need some more BOOZE JIM28, BLOCK28, STORMIN' & SUE, and the other 350 SUPER MILLWALL FANS THAT WERE PRESENT TODAY.

    Five things we learnt;
    1. If Hoyte is the answer its a bleeding silly question
    2. Holloway doesn't like Gregory
    But
    3. He likes him fit so he can humiliate him
    4. This system is not effective in the Championship
    5. Our forwards only scare our supporters not the opposition

I wasn't at today's game but fully the criticism. However, seems to me we are at best a mid table team, much like Ipswich last season. After a season of clearing out unwanted players on contracts, Big Mick has got that team playing well. Ollie needs time to achieve the same.

Hang on it ain't IH's fault today, didn't you see Chris Powell threw us a curve ball by setting his team up 3-5-2 when Ollie had prepared us to play against a 4-4-3 . I hope he learns from this and gives Lee Clarke a call to ask him what formation he's gonna play when Brum come down on Tuesday otherwise he may gift them the 3 f@*ck@*g points as we'll by selecting the wrong formation again. 90 f@*ck*ng minutes to throw a few f**cking curve balls of our own back at a team in the relegation zone and he did! Powell could not have planned to see Hoyte come on, nor for IH to leave Gregory sat there on the bench wondering what the f*ck has to happen to get a game so how come those baffling boomerang shaped feckin curveballs didn't make them play quite as sh*te as we did. We will stay up, that's the goal every year so f*ck it - onto the next one and hopefully we'll get a win Tuesday. He did keep us up last year which was a miracle so I for one am prepared to stay behind him even though comments such as the curveball leave me wondering wtf. COYL!!!!

After this mess they called a football match.first of the players have to explain WHY SO BAD.2nd the manager should not blame the players in the gutter press..NOT very professional cos it only breeds comtempt from the players to the manager.3rd. The mental has to shoulder the blame.NOT once has he done so.i suppose monday he might say he got it wrong......back to the game same o..1st goal at ipswich was a hoof to the 2 strikers.same at reading a long pass over the top &cox done us twice.saturday the same again..& has for bailey i could of smack the bloke.1 should not have been playing.2 stupid pen 3 trying to get himself sent off.moron....as for gregory had doubts that he would play( to soon after injury). But no excuses not to play him tuesday.

IH surely you can see, that Dunne and beevers ain't a good partnership, the long ball game is beating us every time play Webster and beevers together or Webster and young Sid nelson, stick with forde in goal play Malone and Briggs at full back, upson,Williams, woolford and Fred in midfield and play 2 up front Gregory being one of them and maybe gueye the other one, you can play 4-2-1-3 to start with see how it goes then switch it to a 4-4-2 with gueye and Gregory up front, hopefully we do sign eagles as he can play and he can beat people with the ball, Martinez is another one who can play.

@jolly roger: yes jolly - that's how it is - Dunne did okay against forest coz asombalonga ain't that tall -as soon as we play against 6 foot plus strikers they push him up on dunne and get the knockdowns and that leaves beevers to deal with the pace of the other striker which he aint equipped for - Edwards is out so there is no point trying to convert abdou to full back IMO- it is a short term solution that won't work - if briggs is an ex England u21 with potential then throw him in and give him a run - he might be a bit of a liability but we needed to build up his confidence - a long term solution - if he isn't good enough why have him in the squad - too many players playing out of their strongest positions

I wish Holloway would just go back to basics for now. Play players in the positions they know. I agree with alot of people we are not good enough for one at front, especially at home. If you look at the top teams they all play 2 up front with pace and power. No one plays spectacular football in this league. All brute force. Gueye and gregory are 2 completely different players but two who have pace and power. I dont expect wonder results every week, no one does. Just seems we have no idea how to attack? We need a player who we always want to get the ball to (gueye or gregory). I still think fuller is useful, but for the bench not starting ahead of our fitter younger exspensive signing. My team for bham would be

    forde.
    Hoyte (unfortunately) dunne, beevers, malone.
    Fred, upson, williams,
    mcdonald,
    Gueye & Gregory.

Bham are average we should put a 100% attacking team out and pile pressure on from the start.

Prepared for the same old predictable though.
