Martinez's mind made up after call from Millwall boss

ANGEL Martinez had his mind set on joining Millwall after receiving a phone call from boss Ian Holloway.

The former Blackpool midfielder has revealed that Tangerines chairman Karl Oyston wanted him to sign a new contract.

But Martinez turned down the chance to stay at Bloomfield Road, as well as an offer from hometown team Girona, to link up with Holloway, who first brought him to England.

And the Spaniard insists he is fully fit and determined to help maintain Millwall's impressive start to the season.

"I was at Blackpool for three years and the connection I had with the fans was fantastic." Martinez said.

"The chairman sent me a message about keeping me there but I know that they are trying to save money and at the same time build a new team with a new manager.

"Everything was difficult as you can see by their start to the season – they are losing every match.

"Hopefully that changes and they start to get some points but it is a very difficult situation.

"I've had one eye on Blackpool because it's been my home but the situation is not the best so when Ollie called and offered me a contract, my mind was focused on joining Millwall."

Martinez trained with Spanish Segunda division side Girona after leaving Blackpool.

He said: "That's where I’m from and the club is in my city. They're a very good professional team.

"I know the manager and the players there; they tried to keep me but there was no chance of that happening! But thanks to them I’m fit and my mind is clear.

“When you are at home and you have no team, you can go for a run or to the gym but it's not the same as playing with a team.”

Millwall travel to Ipswich Town this weekend and Martinez, who is looking to earn a place in Holloway’s XI, has given fans an insight into what they can expect from him.

"I can be defensive or attacking," he explained.

"I like to drop deep, get the ball and get it forward.

"I like to arrive late in the box. I can play everywhere in midfield really but I like to keep possession.

"I love the ball. But I can play another type of football because I am aggressive and I like to fight, so my game is quite complete.

"You need to defend and attack in midfield, and I can do both. I'm ready to get into the team and fight for my place."

@benzo: @ Geoff The Lion. Looking forward to our games against KJ , pros, will be a great atmosphere and a top of the table clash. Cons, we will give them a lot more away fans than they give us....would be a good day out for us.

I like that he is confident and has belief in his abilities, would you not like to see a player that's just had a great game and is being interviewed after say something like " kin ell I was brilliant today, did you see the way I scored that goal, that tackle I made was first class, if the national team manager don't pick me for the next game he needs his eyes tested", that sort of thing I would love to hear but, they had better perform every week or they will get slaughtered, not the same old crap we have heard for years like,"well all the boys played well and it's a team game and the manager has a tough job and blah de bloody blah"...BOOOORRRRRIIINNNGGGG.
Big yourself up when you turn on and bust yer guts to better next time.
I will give the first dislike cos I know i'm gonna get em.............IF ANYONE ELSE DISLIKES MAY YOU TURN INTO A CHARLTON SUPPORTER FORTHWITH. Ha ha.
