Exclusive: Spanish midfielder jets in to seal Millwall move

IAN Holloway is swooping for ex-Blackpool midfielder Angel Martinez – but can sign him after the transfer deadline passes.

NewsAtDen understands the Lions are ready to offer Martinez a one-year contract with the option of a 12-month extension.

The 28-year-old worked under Holloway at Bloomfield Road, with the Millwall boss saying in 2012 that Martinez was "almost the first name on [my] teamsheet."

The Spanish star has been training with former club Girona this summer since turning down a new deal at Blackpool.

And he is flying into the country to tie up a move to The Den, with formalities more likely to be completed on Tuesday than before 11pm tonight.

Martinez is a free agent so can be signed outside of the window.

Holloway, who was also linked with the ex-Espanyol trainee in the January transfer window, is signing Martinez because he can pick a killer pass in the final third.

@bazzer: He won't go - he has it too easy here picking up good money for him and his agent dad for nothing. Hopefully, we can get rid of this wage thief in January to some Division1/2 side where his limited ability will be better suited.

Nicely done. I posted a while back that I would be very surprised if Olly didn't go in for Angel Martinez because he loves that fella. Excellent creative midfielder. Could potentially challenge for the spot that McDonald plays in behind the main striker... Now all we need to hear is that Wright has been taken off our hands and we have finally signed Scannell. Would make for a very good bit of business on the deadline day all in all!

Yet another midfield player, he may be good but how many bloody midfielders do we need. We have one of the weakest strike forces in the division and we are still signing midfielders. They will be falling over each other. We need someone who 1) Gets in the penalty area. 2)Knows where the goal is. 3)Is able to put the round thing between the posts. 4)Is able to do this more than 7 times a season. 5) Can actually win a header against opposing defenders.

@Sealion: He is quality and we need to get rid of some of that midfield, wage-thieving pile of s**t we are carrying. Sure, I would love to sign another forward with all the attributes you mention but their starting prices are £8 Million +. Get real ffs. Our service to the forwards has to improve (even Diego Costa would struggle to get goals with the kind of service our midfield has been providing) and this is a step in the right direction, as will be the addition of the QPR winger if it comes off. Gueye and Gregory cost us nothing and I have every faith in Ollie making them into a goal scoring force to be reckoned with - I just wish he would take a chance now and start them together from the off. If it doesn't work, he can bring on the statue that is Fuller and journeyman Easter - both of whom are capable of scoring if they receive some service which, to date, has been mostly poor.

I'm not saying our midfield couldn't possibly be improved - that would be like saying I wouldn't want Toure, Fabregas, or Iniesta to join us - but actually we are very strong there, with IH already having difficult choices to make with Bailey (surely "first name on the teamsheet"), Williams (ditto), Upson, Powell, McDonald, Chaplow, Jimmy. So that's seven plus Martinez and that's not counting Josh Wright. I sometimes think IH would prefer to play a 2-8 formation ! The squad has to be trimmed otherwise how do you keep all these players happy and where is the money to pay the wages of the goal-scorer we all know we need.
Regarding Scannell, as I said in a post yesterday, I don't know how good he is but I do feel that we need a player who provides threat, either through pace or trickery or both, and at the moment I don't think that Martin or Woolford do that enough, so at least I can see where IH is coming from on this one.

Maybe Ollie considers our strikeforce to be adequate but we are not creating enough chances?

Since this has been the best start for a while, maybe we should be a pit more positive

@Reg Burrs Coat Peg: Nail firmly struck on the head. I am sure Ollie would love £8 Million to spend on a striker but he knows that would be money wasted if we can't give him any real service.

@southstandview: EVERYONE knows more about football than me but I am not Millwall's Manager. I have been every game, save Sheff Weds, and have seen little or no real creativity in the league games and the squad is saturated with defensive midfielders. I am sure that Ollie would not be looking to replace some of them with the likes of Martinez if he felt that the current crop were all capable of creativity. But, hey, you may be right and know better than him.

@brockleysfinest: Yeah, I hadn't forgotten them; just classing them as our more attacking wide players. But unfortunately they're not creating very much for our lone forwards. As for Fred, lots of potential and has tricks and pace, but I thought last year people got a touch carried away when he came on and was the only sign of light in a side that had completely lost its way. He's one to be nurtured and then perhaps we'll have a really dangerous player on our hands.

@DELBOY64: I hope Upson doesn't go out on loan. He's a good player and has goals in him I reckon. Is a good complement to Williams and Bailey. Even if he's not first choice at the moment that could all change very quickly with injuries, suspensions and loss of form. Fred I would like to see go out on loan and get first team football - I think that could do him and us a lot of good.

F**k me, some people seem to be expecting us to go out and sign Ibrahimovic or Van Persie or Aguero or Cavani or something!? We're a relatively small club, with a small budget and everyone hates us. We're not going to be able to attract or afford a top striker! We don't have £10m to spend on Jordan Rhodes or £11m to spend on McCormack, so these sorts of players will have to do. Olly's not stupid, he see's the same problems we see and will try to address them the best he can. If he believes this guy can find a killer pass in the final third to set up big chances, then i say we sign him and get the strikers we already have scoring! Be positive! After all, we're in the bloody play off's

I know Fuller had a bit of a mare Saturday his head just wasn't in the game, it happens but he has played relatively well every other game and the new fella looked very strong and awkward which is always good so lets stop the bitching, encourage em, support em and stick together lads. Bit early to say we are in the playoffs ffs. Some people are getting carried away with our league position, we played leeds who were shocking at the time, Fulham who were awful, sheff wed who are ok but nothing great and just managed a draw, beaten at home by Rotherham and hung on for a 2-1 win over a team in free fall and bottom of the league. If we don't sign a goal scorer we will end up below mid table if we are lucky. People keep saying we are a small club no money bla bla bla well I thought are chairman was minted if he is go and spend some doe ffs.

@LETEMCOME:We need to be careful for when the FIFA fair play thing kicks in. We aint generating enough via small gates, academy player sales ext to warrant spending loads hence all the free signings and in my opinion JB, AA and IH have worked wonders compared to the last few seasons. COYL

@LETEMCOME: You're right of course that it's too early to say where we're going to end up, but you can only beat what's in front of you, as the cliché goes, and it's probably true to say that last year we wouldn't have got 10 points against the teams we've played so far.
And yes, we'd all like a goal-scorer - it's just not so easy to find one on our budget (or even on Arsenal's budget it would seem!)
      1. We ARE a small club with no money and we get low gates
      2. John Berylson has already put in millions
      3. He's rich but he's no Abramovitch
      4. You're not allowed to spend spend spend because of the fair play rules.
Keeping the club solvent has got to be the number one priority, with a slow but steady growth towards the promised land of the Premier one day.
