Chaplow relieved to make injury return despite Saints loss

RICHARD Chaplow hopes his injury woes are behind him after making his first Millwall appearance since March.

Chaplow missed the final month of last season because of an Achilles injury and then tweaked his hamstring on the eve of the new campaign.

But he put in an impressive performance after being handed a start against former club Southampton in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

And Chaplow said afterwards: "It felt good just to be out there. It's been a while.

"I have trained frequently since the back end of last season and all the way through pre-season, so it was frustrating to pick up that little niggle before the Leeds game.

"But that's football and that's the way it's gone for me of late.

"It's great to be back out on the pitch and great to play against Southampton where I had so many great memories

"I just enjoy being out on the pitch. That’s where I want to be, that's what I love doing and what I've been working towards for so long after that Achilles injury."

Despite the 2-0 defeat, Chaplow felt there were positives to take from the Lions' display.

And the midfielder was full of praise for 20-year-old Jack Powell, who made his first start for Millwall against the Saints.

"Hopefully we can push on this season," Chaplow added.

"It's been a good start – it was a little bit disappointing at the weekend but we didn't do ourselves any harm on Tuesday with a changed XI and a new system.

"At the end we finished with four young lads on the pitch, which is good to see and great for the future of the club.

"Jack was very composed, which is very much how he is. He's a very laid back character and he'll be one to watch for the future."

@wappinglion: what is it about chaplow to be labelled with being called a wage thief..when we have had other players out for long periods..sadler was out a lot longer then this bloke. And was never branded a thief.nor was hackett.& most recent.Batt.In anyone would think he fakes the injuries..Lets hope that is behind him now so he can help the club go forward.

It's quite a frightening thought, If we got Williams, Upson and Chaplow all fit and well and playing as a centre 3 trio, I don't think any team in the Championship will be able to stop them from controlling the midfield.
