Southampton boss set to play strong team against Millwall

RONALD Koeman has no intention of fielding a weakened team against Millwall this evening, with Southampton set to take the Capital One Cup seriously.

The Saints have played only two competitive fixtures – both in the Premier League – since the start of the new season, and Koeman says his first-choice XI is still in need of match minutes.

£12million-striker Shane Long is one of five new signings who is still in the process of settling in at St Mary's.

Speaking to Southampton's official site, Koeman said: "The objective for tonight is to win and to progress in the League Cup.

"We are at the beginning of the season, and we've changed a lot as a team so we need time, we need sessions and we need matches to put everybody together and to make the team better.

"We've prepared ourselves seriously and in a good way. We'd like to win every match and, for that reason, we will take this very seriously.

"We've stated the season okay, and now we need to win.

"We have some players who are not 100%, and tomorrow is not a match to take a big risk with some players who might not be in a good physical state to play, but I won’t change a lot."

@lionsmad: He was one of the Dutch Greats! of the 80/90's, a very good player if memory serves me right. Wasn't he in the Van basten/Gullet side?

@durlic: Bloody hell durlic, we don't need anymore reasons not to bother going!! 😉
Looks like it could be a harder game than first thought! But f**k it, I still think it'll be a good game just because our lads will be up for it and looking to impress... If we play positive and hit em hard - you never know... the terrible conditions might work in our favor too - it's like f**king mons'oon season out there! Could go either way...? COYL!!
p.s. don't watch it at home..... COME DOWN TO THE DEN!!!

My team for tonight would be 4-2-3-1,

    Forde
    Hoyte Webster Shittu Briggs
    Powell Wright
    Onyedinma O'Brien Chaplow
    Gregory

I've only put Wright in there as I cant see Ollie risking Williams or Abdou

I for one would have loved to see alfie pavey and/ or o'brien make an appearance tonight. Pavey should have been brought up to the senior squad permanently! Hes a diamond in the rough. Watch this space !

To be fair, that was an England team with Carlton Palmer in CM, a round Edam would've scored against him.
