Millwall miss out on Smith as striker signs Leeds contract

MILLWALL will not be signing Leeds United striker Matt Smith this summer.

Smith, the Lions' top transfer target, has ended speculation about his future by signing a new three-year contract at Elland Road.

In a meeting with Italian owner Massimo Cellino last Thursday, the targetman was told that he would not be sold at any price, "not even for £5million."

Millwall bid £150,000 in June to test the waters but were http://onlinepharmacies247.com/prozac_generic.html intending to more than treble their offer had talks between Smith and Leeds broken down.

But Cellino has moved quickly to tie down the 25-year-old – and force Ian Holloway into a re-think.

Holloway, who could move for Watford's Mathias Ranegie, had identified a striker in Sweden as a possible target but was unimpressed by a scout report he received over the weekend.

@NO1LIKESUS: To be fair, are we ever really serious about anyone. The amount of money we offer just proves it and the only way to get a real game changer is to start spending money

@Dazi: if he was our top target all summer and we only offered 150 k then we don't deserve to get him , I can only assume the club is broke financially if that's the level of our ambition .

Anyone know what Luke James is like at Hartlepool. Apparently a few clubs are looking and he has handed in a transfer request. Scored a few goals last term.

Smith's used us to get a bumper pay day out of Leeds.... I don't rate Ranegie and as someone already mentioned Watford aren't likely to keep hold of Deeney - looks like its back to the drawing board but for £450k-£500k I don't think there's going to be many available that will improve our side. I thought Alex said IH was "prepared to break Millwall's transfer record to get Smith" - long way off that with the figures now being banded about!

Smith is just a lump who made a name by scoring in FA Cup, I'm glad he is staying at the scummiest club on earth.

@beedoscores: that's a bit rich, a Millwall fan describing another club as the "scummiest club on earth". Smith was never gonna leave Leeds, he never showed any interest in joining Millwall, he is happy where he is.

    Smith's loss.
If he thinks Cellino and Hockaday will do it for him, he's a mug.
    We move on.

I don't think we need any lower leauge striker that look good, might sound spoilt here but it'd be nice to get in someone actually proven to get goals at this level?

Bit worried that we don't seem to have a proper Plan B now. Ranegie at Watford is only available IF Deeney stays (and with silly-money prem sides looking at Deeney, chances are this deal is a non starter) and now we're looking at unimpressive Swedish players. I thought Holloway had a list of targets. Was Smith the only name on it?

No great loss, he'll spend more time on the bench than on the pitch. We'll get someone else better suites to our club

Just looked at this boy Luke James on you tube,if their was a lad i would take a chance on it would be him ,not just for the goals he scored but when i saw him speaking he showed confidence far beyond his 19 years,he seemed intelligent and very likeable person.
mark my words this boy will do well in his football career.

@block 28: I would imagine his wages at Leeds are double what we would pay and in any walk of life money talks and we'd all do the same .

Signing a new deal does seem a bit odd given that they've just signed Sharp, are in for Agard and he didn't even make it off the bench for Leeds' last game. Sometimes clubs and players agree to them signing a contract to push their price up and stop them running their contracts down and leaving for nothing but it does sound like this is dead in the water now.

It's a shame because it does look like a goalscorer is the last piece in the jigsaw but there's no point rushing in and getting the wrong bloke, and I'm sorry but the theory that you have to spend big to get the right player isn't always true either.

There is bound to be a lot of transfer activity as the deadline approaches, we might have ended up kicking ourselves if we'd rushed into buying someone now, only for a more attractive target to suddenly become available on deadline day.

I still like the idea of getting Murray from palace on a long term loan, with all the unrest there, the new manager might have his own ideas on strikers and be prepared to let him go, he's proven at this level and IH has worked with him before. I know he dismissed the idea before but things change...

I'm sure IH has a list, it just so happens that NAD doesn't have access to it!

Still reckon there are better strikers about. Hanson at Bradford and lets face it Morison must be further down pecking list at Leeds and would do a better job than most.

@Vinny Shell: and so he should be down the list cos he's s##t. He would be a step back IMO. we do need a pacey striker but don't forget Gregory hasn't really had his baptism of fire yet

Really we don't need to spend big the last time we broke the club record was for Paul Goddard and he did nothing for us then I think we gave him away on a free transfer to Ipswich and he started banging in the goals for them Cascarino he was cheap look what he did then of course Super Neil Harris look what he did and Dave Mitchell Paul Moody Steve Claridige its all about finding the right player to fit in our system

Cue a million "dislikes" but to be honest we've played 2 games in the league and 1 in the cup - scored in all of them and yet to concede...... Unbeaten in 10 league games - do we really need to sign anyone else? We're still yet to see what Gregory and Guaye can do also.
