Millwall boss closing in on deal for youngster El Bekri

MILLWALL are poised to snap up pint-sized French starlet Sofiane El Bekri.

El Bekri, an 18-year-old midfielder who has recently been released by RC Lens, played a trial game for the Lions' development squad in pre-season.

And manager Ian Holloway revealed on Monday morning that the youngster would be signing a deal at The Den.

El Bekri, who is of Algerian descent, was linked with moves to Newcastle and Tottenham by the French media in 2012.

"They let him go because he's too small, but he's absolutely brilliant to be fair with his passing of the ball," Holloway said.

"He came to us through my mate Gary Penrice. He'll be for the U21s but I really like him – he reminds me of Leon Britton."

Welcome to Millwall...It's good that we are picking up potential future talent and that the club finally has a youth policy. Maybe we can pick up some local youngsters that know what Millwall is about.

@vonhardshaft: Good post don't know what all the dislikes are all about its clearly some sort of side venture Holloway is good at developing youth as for the to small unless he's a 4 ft hobbit cant see how that affects his passing game just look at Xavi and Iniesta.

Someone's being heavy-handed with the dislikes today aren't they? Good to have him and this being "too small" is a familiar story (Maradona, Zola, Scholes, Messi, Wise....the list goes on).

@SE14: Agreed to an extent. A decent striker is a priority but because of the way we now play a pint-sized midfield genius who can unlock even the most stubborn of Championship defences could be a real asset. Hhmmm...jury's out on this one.

@NO1LIKESUS: my worry would be the physicality of this league. He does look about 12 and one dodgy challenge from a 15 stone 6ft 6" defender will knock the lad out! Either that or he runs into Shittu during training.

How can anyone s*** this news off. No one on this site has ever heard of him, he did well in a trial for the youth team, and Holloway sees promise, what more does anyone want?

Lots of dislikists on this forum today as stated previously.
    As this post should prove.
Maybe people could post an opposing opinion to why you dislike something as it's a forum and we can all exchange opinions in a grown up way.
I could understand if what was posted was controversial.

@wall2wall: I think Aldo needs to put a filter on this site that only registered fans can "like" or "dislike" comments.... at the moment anyone can "dislike" a comment!

For instance when we was linked to Matt Smith, there was a load of Leeds fans who "disliked" comments because they want him to stay etc

Didn't realise you could do anything other than read NAD unless you were registered.
        That may explain things then.
        Cheers.

@Bradders: Thanks Bradders! This does explain a lot. Half the pleasure of this site is reading the good articles, the other half is reading the opinions of the club we share an interest in - even if sometimes we don't agree. The dislike thing, I had thought, went some way to get a cross-section of opinions among our own fans....not always then.

Will be on low wages, a good ball player, will be put in the development squad to play against older players.... He is worth a punt, could be another Valbuena type player.

I think we still need another striker/winger, to be fair Scannell and Smith would be very good!

Need to try and get some of players out on loan to league clubs who are going to play them week in, week out like Aiden Obrien, Marquis, Siafa, Powell, but keep Fred or sell the players who are on the fringes who will struggle to get a game when Chaplow, Upson come back.

Not even signed yet and we're comparing him to Zola and Maradona ! Any new signings are a good thing in my eyes. Try them and if no good move them on, worst thing that happens is it creates competition for position

@lionarted: I think people are comparing him to Maradona & Zola because of his height nothing to do with his skills as I don't think anyone can honestly say they have seen him play, I for 1 haven't even heard of him before!

@Bradders: he must have something about him, otherwise Holloway wouldn't be showing an interest. Midfield isn't really where we need more bodies but if he's decent and has an eye for a pass then why not give the lad a chance?

If Millwall don't sign him some other club will and we may regret it, so well done to him and hopefully a player for the future. Am sure Ollie has a striker in his sights give him time.

Ollie is taking us from a side that relied on players like Hendo, Dichio, Peeters and Maierhofer over the years to actually playing decent football. You've got to give it to him, if there was one club you thought couldn't change the culture of it would be us, but he's incorporating our past and using it to build a good future. As a fan I'm loving every second, I'm hanging on every of newsatden's word
