Stephen Bywater swaps Lions for Gillingham in loan move

STEPHEN Bywater has joined Gillingham on loan until January.

Millwall's back-up goalkeeper has not featured for the Lions since the 3-1 Championship defeat to Burnley in February.

The 33-year-old is set to make his debut for the League One side against Yeovil tomorrow.

Boss Ian Holloway is not expected to seek a replacement for Bywater and will instead promote Denzel Gerar to the first-team bench in the short term.

      @wongo:
Denzil Gerrar is only 19, and is still several seasons away from being ready for first team football.
He is barely 6ft, and is very slightly built for any professional footballer, let alone a 'keeper.
Has a small wingspan and small hands too.

Looks ok at youth team level, and shows decent reactions, but cannot handle crosses under pressure at senior level. Gets lost in a crowd.
Shows promise of being able to play a sweeper/keeper role though, good pace and willing to rush out of the net. Good composure too, looks confident.
Long Kicking is an issue, barely accurate to the halfway line.
Promising youth player, but his small frame/wingspan might mean he never makes the step up though.

@Garrick: Although he is still young (Gerrar) Ollie knows what he is doing and good riddance wage thief Bywater. There is one way for Denzel to get better and that is training with the 1st team he'll come good. Have a bit of faith lads.

Perhaps Gills can be encouraged to keep him.

Seems like bywater is still there due to his contract, hopefully after this loan we can agree to cancel his contract by mutual consent and move on. COYL

@darrenhales: grow up mate , he left west ham 8 years ago and played nearly 3 times as many games for derby , I don't care who our players have turned out for in the past .

I believe he was trained by another Millwall keeper Pat Cuff Joking aside he has to have been one of the worst keepers I have Ever seen . It has amazed me why we have not brought in another quality keeper in the summer transfers I would have thought that would have been a priorty given that D Ford took his time . THERE was Lee camp and the Jamie Jones and Luke Steel to name a few that are very capable keepers

As Bywater was not in the team photo, this should not come as a great surprise, his performances have been less than what we would expect anyway but I think Gerrar deserves his chance.

Glad to see Bywater gone - even on a temporary basis. Denzel is not ready yet. Wouldn't be surprised to see another keeper coming in in the near future. As Bywater's is only a loan the club can't come out and say they are replacing him. If we mug them or anyone else in to taking him, I'm sure a new back up will be coming in.

Just wanted to make a quick point. Though Steven Bywater didn't make the impact he most probably would liked to have, i'm rather disappointed in peoples response to him moving on. Yes he's ex West ham, but if you look back in to the history books Harry 'Arry' Cripps was ex West ham, and now we have a bar named after him, also Gary Alexander spent 2 years at West ham previous to us and to name another, last but by far not least our very own number 1 Fordey! who also spent 2 years at West ham previous. Do i take it these blokes are all vermin scum!! I know if i was a footballer i'd want as much money as i could get, cus the abuse just isn't worth anything less.
    Good luck Steve

@Lions88:Personally, I couldn't care less who he played for previously; I just didn't think he was good enough at this level. He always looked like he could chuck one in the net every game.

As previous post says we have had our fair share of ex west spam players over the years but I just thought when he occasionally played for us he was not good enough , there must be a better number two goalkeeper out there
