Hectic start to season is "ridiculous", blasts Millwall boss

MILLWALL'S hectic start to the new campaign is the result of "awful planning", manager Ian Holloway has said.

After a three-month break, the Lions will play six matches in the first 21 days of the season.

"The first month of the season is Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday – it's just ridiculous," Holloway said. "It's too much.

"It's awful planning – we have to play four times in ten days."

However, Holloway admits he is looking forward to the competitive matches getting underway on August 9, when Millwall host Leeds United at The Den.

"I suppose we all want the games to get going again because these friendlies are all pointless," he said. "There were some crazy results last weekend.

"Pre-season doesn't count for anything and it's weird playing games that don't mean anything.

"I've seen teams win all of their friendlies and then lose the first four games of the season. It's all about fitness, understanding your roles and getting going again.

"I wouldn't read too much into pre-season – it's more important that the team understands how we're going to do things, how we’re going to behave and how we are with each other.

"The rest of it just takes care of itself."

Despite the opening day of the season being just over a week away, Holloway insists he has not settled on his strongest starting XI

He added: "You're having a laugh! I'm not thinking about Leeds, I'm thinking about how fit they all are.

"What I made the players do was very, very tough on Tuesday. Sometimes training is physical, sometimes it’s psychological, but this was psychological.

"I trained them hard and then made them play a full game, but the way they went about their work was excellent.

"I can't really fault them since they've been back – they've all worked well together and we've got some things going as a group of people.

"They're understanding me, I'm understanding them and hopefully we'll fall into a routine like we did at the end of last season.

"We've been back a long time now but suddenly the Leeds game will have come and gone and before you know it, it will be Fulham away.

"I'll either have problems or I won't, we'll have started well or we won’t have – but right now nothing's happening and that takes some getting used to."

@WestKentLion: Completely agree with you, play the youngsters and a few that need to get match fit, is anyone really bothered about the capital one cup?

@Charliefearnofoe: agree no one cares about the league cup because the bigs clubs have an advantage due to two legs in the semi final! Fa cup is the only one people care about now! If we get knocked out by wycombe so be it.

We've got a big squad to cover all these games unlike last year when nobody was fit. I hope your playing mind games when you say you don't know your starting line up

Might not be a popular thought but FFS, it's a minimum 2 days rest between each game. I wish I got 2 days rest each time I did 90 minutes work at the office.

@Bayern_Lion: agree playing 2 games in one week !! not the worst job in the world , however this is the same for everyone in our league so were not alone & 2nd game is wycombe so agree bring on some youngsters , give Fred a run out , saves lending him out on loan for a month ..

I'm going to the Wycombe game, so I care if we get knocked out! They stayed in the league on GD - we should beat them with whoever we put out. COYL

Sounds like excuses already and we haven't even started. We will have the same as other clubs. At least our first week is all in London. Ee could have drawn boro away in the cup which would have lost a day for travelling. Let the youngsters loose on Wycombe. Tell them to play without fear, to express themselves and enjoy it. That confidence will only help the club in the long run. COYL!

@mfc1rob: if Fulham can give us all these tickets. Then there's no excuses from all the other clubs.
