Briggs set for Blackpool after failing to agree Millwall deal

TRIALIST Matthew Briggs has turned down a contract offer from Ian Holloway.

Briggs has been training with the Lions for three weeks but his Den move is now in severe doubt.

The left back was released by Fulham at the end of last season but he convinced Holloway to table a deal that would have seen him stay in London.

However, talks with the 23-year-old have stalled – and Millwall are ready to walk away from the negotiating table altogether.

Briggs could now join crisis club Blackpool.

Holloway told the Southwark News: "I don't think that's happening now. We have offered Briggsy something but he wants a lot more than I'm going to pay him.

"I've got a certain amount of money left and if he's not going to accept what I'm offering then he's not the right one for me. His agent says we are quite a way off.

"I like Briggsy but it was always going to be tight this summer with the number of players we already have under contract.

"I could have worked well with him but if he doesn't want to come here then I'll move on, it's not a problem.”

Briggs trained with the Lions on Tuesday but did not show up yesterday.

"I think he'll move on – he needs to impress other people now," Holloway said. "There is no point training and coaching somebody who isn't going to be my player."

    good on you IH.....

Don't let the player dictate what he wants....

If you want him and he is worth paying X a week but no more then stick to it and walk away...the ball is then in his court.

We want players who want to play for us, he has to remember we are a championship side and not a premiership side so wages will be less...

If he thinks he's worth more then tell him to jog on... Blackpool can have him as they have no players so maybe he thinks he can squeeze them more than he can squeeze us...if he signs for them for 2 or 3 years I hope he will like playing div 1 football because that's where they are going..........

@Kiwimillwall: Sounds like he doesn't care where they are going as long as he gets paid what he wants. Probably a pointer to why he couldn't make it at Fulham after 15 years there.

@lion.ie: to be honest we're knee deep in defenders and not sure we can afford another one , rather get a decent forward in .

Says a lot about a young footballer, when a manager like IH wants to work with them and has been quite open about what he thinks of him, sad that it all boils down to money. You could have done well with the Lions young man now jog on.

Well there ya go, 23 years old, not played any football, gets an offer to do just that, and he puts money up as more important. Suspect we will hear very little of this kid from now on, he will float about, drift out the game and spend the rest of his life regretting making poor decisions and listening to the scum that call themselves agents. He should have grabbed this opportunity with both hands, played really well and got his bigger money deal later, either with us or another club. MUG

I'm sure his agent makes most of his decisions for him & that's obviously gonna be based on money. However if he wants his player to succeed long term Blackpools not exactly the right place for any player at the mo? Holloway could have potentially worked wonders for him, then again he slipped away under Fulhams premier league coaching staff?
Lets move on & find a lower league gem that can be polished before being tainted by bright lights & big money!

He will regret going to Blackpool but I rather a younger more ambitious player. Plenty out there but they have to be right... at least Danny is still with us and despite his weaknesses his heart is at the den and he can still put in a shift if needs be ....where have all the Barry Kitchener's gone?

I got slagged of on here when I said Briggs was not worth the money.
Squad player potential, but has a massive attitude problem, that wants premiership money and a hefty signing on fee.
Same reason his moves to Watford, Huddersfield and up in Scotland fell through.

Might be a good player one day if he ever gives a monkeys.
