Millwall manager undecided on Fred Onyedinma loan move

IAN Holloway has not made a decision on Fred Onyedinma's short-term future.

The Millwall boss is considering whether to send Onyedinma to a League One club for a one-month loan stint or keep the exciting youngster in his first-team squad.

Onyedinma is one of several rising stars who could be farmed out to gain experience.

"I might loan a lot of them out, which I've said all along," Holloway said.

"They need experience and they won't get that playing for the U21s. I want to play my U18s in the U21s to test them.

"Some of our boys will be playing for another team, getting some experience and developing that way.

"I haven't made my mind up about who will go out on loan because I don't know which clubs would be interested.

"They'll only go out for a month because I can have them back and see where they are.

"I'm sure there will be clubs keen on Fred but what he's thinking is important as well.

"I am still working with him and I might change my mind – we will give him some game time against Real Mallorca on Friday and he might do well."

Yes I understand young players going out on loan and getting vital experience at lower league clubs but what bugs me is last season on the few occasions I watched Fred play for us he was one of our better players ( not hard at times we were awful )
So does this mean he realistically he has little chance of playing for the first team on a regular basis now ? Ex premiership managers such as Fergie and even Moyes ( when at Everton ) believed in giving young players that same experience at their own clubs and I tend to agree if they are good enough play them age shouldn't be a reason not to

Why give his talents to someone else, from what I've seen of Fred he is worthy of getting in our first team.
Don't want to hear about him getting experience and game time, as he can do that with MFC!!!

He might do well if we are not in a relegation battle, We were pretty desperate when he got his chance last season and maybe expected to much from him. I have watched him a few times for the youth team and he is a good prospect. But i believe a run of games lower down the leagues will serve him and us well in the future.

Fred is a very talented player but he needs to improve his tactical skills. Few months in a League One team that can guarantee he will play every week will do wonders for his tactical awareness.

I agree with everyone one regarding him staying, surely Ollie needs to manage him I.E. pick his games when he will start and have in mind how long he will need to prove himself a real first teamer, this is of course if we are not in near the same position as we were for most of last season.

Come on Ollie your supposed to be good at the old mind games and managing players earn your corn turn him into a very good championship player.

Loan him out for a month

He gets a run of games and if he makes mistake it doesn't cost us and if fans get on his back who cares not out crowd and he comes back to us

Or start him in out team and let spme of the idiots call him a useless cxxx cause he misplaced a pass

Build his confidence at a lower league then bring him back to the fold with 5/6 consecutive games under his belt

        @Jim28:

I get that jim but he needs to have a bit of confidence throwing him straight in he might sink chances are he will do really well

But can't hurt to let him make his mistakes for a month only at another club can it

You know as well as I do there will be a handful of idiots that will get on his back straight away which could wreck his development

Everyone has there opinion and that's mine

But it should only be for a month where he will get game time

The problem with loaning him out is one he could get injured & two how would fit into holloways style of play when he's been playing a different way for 2 or 3 months. & lastly he should be in the first team anyway.

Totally agree with Block 28, Fred could go on loan & after a couple of weeks be injured for half a season, its obvious from the feedback that Fred was one of our better players last season , so whats the problem , keep him at SE16 & let him develope here

I think Fred going out for a month or so is good for him. He can adjust physically to competitive football and make possible mistakes at someone else's expense , not ours.
I think it can do no harm at all.

Rather see Fred play for us than loaned out now, he might bring that extra dimension, still have faith in the manager he seems to know what he is doing. Just worried we have not got another striker yet.

If he gets loaned out his confidence won't grow! He needs to know that he has a chance in the Millwall 1st team from day one and to fight for his place amongst the squad! So what he goes to MK Dons and they win 5 in a row doesn't mean he will come to the Den and perform against Reading or Cardiff, he needs to get in our first team through his performances in training, he's one of the better players for us he's young and has no fear. Keep him and play him even as a sub

@millwall-1988: If he's up to standard or thereabouts, I agree with you there mate - we want our youth to feel at home playing at the den - dealing with the championship pace, Ollie's playing style and the fans. We don't want them to get out of the swing of things and become nervous of playing on the big stage...
However, maybe a 1 month loan is just another way of easing him in - because even though it's a drop in level - it could still be good practice for him - playing against fully grown men in competitive games - rather than getting the most of his competitive action in the U-21's...?

There's a lot to consider on this subject - for a start, we have to remember that we the fans see only a fraction of the game time than what IH & co see - it could be that Fred gets his adrenaline up for whenever he plays for the 1st team, then doesn't perform so well in training...? We might say 'well if that's the case, maybe he should be in the 1st team all the time' - but Ollie will see this as inconsistency.
The other issue is that it's always a balancing act, bringing youth players in - You want them to be good enough to keep up with the big boys and deal with the stick... Then the downside to loaning them out is they could be taking steps back in getting used to playing at a lower level - on dodgy pitches etc, which kind of defeats the object. It's all about easing them into it IMO.
What IS encouraging, is Ollie saying that he would only be looking to loan him for a very short time - to me, that says that he's almost there....
Whatever happens, I wish him the best of luck - very exciting player to watch and could be a star player for us in the not so distant future.... COYL.

Calm down guys..let's look at the facts, Fred is young and will improve , but what he did last year was that more our desperation or was he that good..he played against Charlton but was in and out of that game, if it had been Henry we would have been calling him a lazy B*****d and to get involved more! I believe him going out on loan for 1 month which is the transfer window, if anything dire happens Olly will have to deal with it..I personally think its a good idea, considering we have Gueye, Woolford, Martin etc before him..IOIT

A month is a month but he should only go if guaranteed game time. He may as well warm our bench rather than somebody elses. However, this is another contradiction from Holloway re giving youth a chance. If Fred is top of that list then the rest have little hope of breaking into the firsr team squad. That's more worrying.

@seanmfc: "How nice would that be" I agree with. Unfortunately I can't see it happening unless we sign another striker before the start of the season. If last season's statistics are anything to go by Easter, Fuller, Marquis and McDonald will be lucky to get double figures between them. Gregory is a completely unknown quantity at this level but might take to the Championship straight away or he could take half the season to adjust.

@seanmfc: was being all positive yesterday thought id take a trip to the bookies to land a tenner on wall gatecrashing the top 6...... Now considering we were 1/50 in some places to go DOWN at the start of july the best odds i got for a top 6 finish were 10/1!!!!! ..... Thought them odds were gonna be something like 100/1!!!! So do the bookies (and ollie and the boys) know something we dont!!! Dont get me wrong i still backed it though , who knows ay?

    This is really irresponsible journalism.
Misrepresenting the facts just for page hits is what I'd expect from the gutter press.

Took a comment from Ollie about wanting Fred Onyedinma to be in the first team squad this season, and giving him every chance to win himself a place, and made it into a negative.

    What Ollie actually said:
    - Young fringe squad players (u21s) will be going out on loan for first team football, not wasting time in the development squad.
    - The next generation of youngsters (u18s) will be pushed hard, playing above their age group.
    - Fred Onyedinma is still working with the first team, and the priority is for him to be a part of the first team squad this season.
    - IF AND ONLY IF FRED DOESN'T MAKE THE FIRST TEAM SQUAD will he also be going out on short term loans for experience.

This is an absolute non story, but reported in a very, very negative light that has lead to Millwall supporters questioning Ollie's ability or intention to integrate the youth team players, as is shown by the negative comments here and on social media elsewhere.

Again it is irresponsible journalism, misleading to the real fans and achieves nothing but sowing discord in the fans.

@Garrick: Whilst it's true Aldo requires page hits to bring in advertisers, I don't think this is irresponsible journalism. Bit more like not much going on so here's a filler.
What NAD does achieve with some regularity, are scoops.

@NICKOLA: I think we all just want to see a nice long list from Ollie stating who he wants to bring in to fill that last striker spot! Unfortunately I don't think that's going to happen..... unless Aldo tries interrogating him Jack Bauer style!
From what I could make of the SLPs interview with Ollie - is it seems like he's going to play the gong game and see who becomes available on loan from the champ'ship or prem in the next couple of weeks - but even that was pretty vague. He commented on Bamford - saying that he was looking at him - but followed up by saying something like 'a bigger club might've already got to him' - SLP managed to make that the main story on the back page!
Bit disappointed about the stories today - but I think Aldo's got his work cut out for him at this stage.... smoke and mirrors..... Even this story could be just one of Ollie's mind games between him and the squad - keeping everyone on their toes - no ones place in the team is guaranteed.....?
Looking forward to Friday though - back at the den!!!!!! MIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLL!!!
p.s. - maybe we'll find out more then......

@Luke ColdBlow10: Personally, I know that our forward line as is, is not good enough. I'm just a Millwall supporter but I'm really sure that Ollie knows that too. I'm also very sure that this striker that we're all waiting for is imminent. Certainly before next Saturday. Whether he's a premiership loanee or a major marquee signing remains to be seen but he is coming. I'm 100% positive about that.

@Garrick: You seem to be ignoring these direct quotes? "I'm sure there will be clubs keen on Fred but what he's thinking is important as well.
"I am still working with him and I might change my mind - we will give him some game time against Real Mallorca on Friday and he might do well." Especially the 'I might change my mind' piece which distinctly implies that Holloway has already decided to send him out on loan. In any case, I don't see a Government enquiry being set up and Aldo getting bumped off by the MI5 in a 'Fredgate' scandal due to this story.....

Fred is ready for full games yet but involvement in the development squad and coming on as an impact player for the first team is a good idea. Build up his time on the pitch as he get stronger.

Just bring in this extra striker ...PLEASE......

Who do we think we are getting....???

Is there actually a short list of strikers going out on loan from Premiership clubs

and do we really want a player from another championship club because if he's not good enough for their 1st team why would we want them in ours

or are we in the position of beggars cant be choosers before the season even starts.....?????
