Millwall defender dreaming of final-day promotion at Wolves

SCOTT Malone has to wait until the final day of the season to return to Wolves.

Malone began his career at Molineux but was sold to Bournemouth in 2012 having failed to make a single first-team appearance for the club.

So the defender admits he is relishing the Lions' two clashes with the Midlands side in the coming campaign – especially the away game on May 2.

And the 23-year-old already has a picture in his mind of how he'd like that day to pan out.

Malone said: "Who knows what that game could mean in the context of the season, but hopefully we'll be fighting for promotion.

"That's the dream for me this year – to get promoted at Molineux.

"I was there for eight or nine years and I went out on loan quite a few times.

"My defensive side of the game had a lot to do with me leaving because they were in the Premier League and I don't think I was ready for that.

"But I'm really looking forward to playing against Wolves – I haven't had faced them in a competitive game since I left there."

While Malone is dreaming big ahead of the new season, the left back says Millwall's primary ambition is to avoid another battle against the drop.

"In my two seasons at the club we've been fighting at the bottom of the table, so it would nice not to be struggling against relegation – that's the first aim," he said.

"If you're in the play-off mix with ten to go, and you look at our unbeaten run last year, then you can finish in the top six.

"We want to be in a position to make a challenge for the play-offs come the last few months of the season."

Competition for places is fiercer than ever before this summer, with manager Ian Holloway integrating the club's academy stars with the first-team squad.

"Nobody's position is guaranteed," Malone said.

"Fred Onyedinma and Sid Nelson have both started pre-season games and played really well so they're coming into the equation now.

"Ollie's building for the future so if we're not doing the business in the first team then we know we can be replaced. The manager won't have qualms about dropping anyone."

Crazy talk! At the end of the day finishing mid table will be an achievement, as the squad has been improved with Gregory, Webster, Edwardes and Fuller, but with respect to these players they are not gonna get other teams too worried, a few more additions are required to fulfil Scotty Malones dream!!!!

Gregory has to prove himself up 3 levels.
Webster has come from a relegated defence.
    Fuller ......who knows??

This is not a promotion chasing squad.
We need to clam down. One stage at a time, just stay away from the relegation zone first!!

It's good to see the players looking towards the start of the season. Let's see where we are & how we are playing at the end of August By then we should no wot needs to be done in terms of whether we need to improve the squad. Roll on august.

Has anybody read the whole piece? He dreams of promotion but is more interested in avoiding a relegation battle. If we are in with a chance of playoffs who knows. I don't think anyone's getting too excited though, but why not have a bit of ambition. Agree we still need a striker, and hope for some news very soon.

This is ollies first full season in charge some of the players are still getting to know how Ollie works and how each other works so it might be a slow start but if we can get August out of the way and still be unbeaten then i for one still believe we will have a great season,Come December lets see where we are in the league and what players are performing well and which are losing the plot.
Its nice to hear that the players are up for it but they should be like that every season,If they can put all that enthusiasm into energy then we will have a really great season

Dont think anybody at this stage believes we have any hope of promotion but its great to hear the players talking like that.

as said above if we can just keep out of trouble all season and show some millwall grit i will be a very happy bunny

I think it shows the mentality Ollie is instilling in the team.

I'd love to see us finish in the top half of the table and cause a few upsets. BTW - based on the last 8 games last season we were 6th in the table.
