Exclusive: Ugandan winger Mutumba jets in for Millwall trial

MILLWALL have handed a trial to Ugandan international Martin Mutumba.

The skilful winger is a free agent after leaving Turkish Super Lig outfit Caykur Rizespor at the end of last season and he will now be given a chance to win a deal at The Den.

Mutumba is due to link up with the Lions at their training ground on Monday morning and could feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aldershot this week.

The 29-year-old, who was raised in Sweden, spent less than six months in Turkey after a January move failed to work out.

Prior to joining Rizespor, Mutumba enjoyed a successful spell with AIK Stockholm, where he made 83 appearances in three seasons.

Speaking last summer, the attacked admitted he would relish a move to England.

"It has always been a dream of mine since I was young to play in England," Mutumba said.

"I have grown up watching English football in Sweden and I feel now the time is right to go and try and play in England.

"I almost joined Crystal Palace in 2008 but the move did not happen.

"If I moved to England it would be big news in Uganda because English football is the most popular over there."

Mutumba, who played for Sweden at U17 level but has since made six appearance for the Ugandan national side, is also a freestyle rapper.

With the club looking at exciting, overseas and players with pace (as well as promoting youth), we should be seeing quite a few more through the turnstiles this year!!

I really hope we sign Briggs & Gueye, 1 more striker and another international player like that Ugandan fella with a box of tricks!

Ollie looks like he knows what us fans want!! Buzzing for the new season!

Seen him play for AIK a few times since they are my local team here in Sweden, and I am very excited about this. Good player, who definately can create something out of nothing.

Fun story about him. Prior to the final league deciding cruncher between AIK (1st) and Gothenbourg (2nd) at Gothenbourg, Martin was so sure that AIK would win that he tatooed "AIK GULD 2LAX9" (AIK GOLD 2009) across his chest. After a s*** first half and down 1-0, they turned it around, mainly thanks to Martin and won the gold. Quite a character.

Looks decent but I don't think he would get time for most of those tricks in the championship.

Some of the best crossing I've ever seen. And on a free. And on a not-too-expensive wage (presumably, as it's Sweden). What are we waiting for?

Looks good in all the Youtube videos - and the opening comment of the highlights of AIK vs Man Utd - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDZnx4rCj4I - is "He's gone past Raphael with ease".

Oh FFS. Looking like interest is waning at Chipplefuddywick towers. What is this obsession with foreign players.

Bags of pace, two footed, good crosser, confident, experience and aggressive, so looks the business.
And I'd take the word of Kenny Pavey as a VERY positive sign.

But there are some serious red flags attached to his personal life (battery and assault as a youth) and his agents history.
There is quite a bit of risk here.
Wait and see on this one, could come down to his attitude and personality fitting Ollie's requirements.

I'd probably take the gamble, I want players with attitude and self confidence on the winger.

@Garrick: Hopefully he's put his bad days behind him... he is 29 and it sounds like this is a big opportunity for him - so he could be more sensible..
What's the story with his agent? Known to f**k about with transfers - or personal life??

This lad looks good! Liking the way he runs at the defense - and with his pace and skill he could be the missing ingredient we've been looking for in providing that killer ball or creating enough space for our strikers to make solid chances. Like the way he's talking about being excited to be in English football as well - that little novelty factor mixed with having something to prove can't be a bad thing....
Let's just hope he's fit and raring to go! COYL.

He does look good. Not seen wing wizardry like that since Phil Barber (????). Agree that he won't get the space and time in the championship but well worth a look - only worrying thing is why at 29, no one else has taken a punt.

Might have the same attitude of some other African players who wouldn't play in the World Cup until they got their £9k bonus. Hope not as videos look good.

Like the look of him from the videos strong , confidant and fast and im sure the manager could handle him even if he is a bit wayward as Carlos said IH is barking mad but there is definitely a line you don't want to cross . Lets hope he is mugging off Leeds defenders in a Blue shirt come 9th august .
