Millwall boss has tried to sign Briggs three times before

IAN Holloway has been a long-term admirer of free agent Matthew Briggs, who has been training with Millwall since Tuesday.

Since being released by Fulham at the start of the summer, the 23-year-old has held talks with Huddersfield Town before linking up with the Lions for a trial stint.

But this is not the first time Briggs has piqued the interest of boss Holloway, who has revealed he tried to sign the left back during his time in charge of Blackpool.

"Briggs is a real surprise to me," Holloway said. "I can't believe he's a free agent – I've tried to sign him about three times in the past.

"When I was at Blackpool, Fulham wouldn't loan him out and now it turns out he's a free agent, which is completely unbelievable.

"When Mick Harford said to me that Briggs was available I thought he was joking. I said 'get him in' and to my disbelief he was there on Tuesday morning. It's weird.

"But this is what happens when you're patient in the transfer market."

With Scott Malone currently the only experienced left back on the club's books, Holloway admits there would be room in his squad for a player like Briggs, who can also play centrally.

"I've got Dylan Casey who I took to Portugal with us but he's a little bit young," the Lions boss said.

"He's got a great attitude but I'm not sure whether he'll be able to push for the first team right now being only 18. It might be a bit early for Dylan but I do like him.

"When someone of Briggs' quality comes up it's no-brainer to have a look at him.

"If I end up with an ex-Fulham kid, whose got England pedigree, and Magaye Gueye, whose got French pedigree, and they're 23 and 24, then I don't think that's bad business."

Would be great to have competition in all areas . Keep them on there toes. Get him in Holloway, and sort forward line out. Hoping for a better season.

He only came in on Tuesday, and contracts I am sure take some time to sort out, so give the guys a break. I am sure they are talking and IH wants to sign him, but if we are offering £5k and he wants £10k then its going to take time.

@Jim28: Nobody else wanted Fuller except Blackpool and he'd had enough there. You don't know what Brigg's agent is saying, who else he is being mentioned to, what other clubs are making contact. Not as easy as you think.

I'm such a big Malone fan so I guess this kid will do as back up since our players are so injury prone.

After the last close season I have given up caring who IH likes, liked, trialled, saw once, etc. Last season there was so much hype with L*m*s, McDonald, Morison etc and we lost to Yeovil. Roll on 9th August and the first 3 points on the board against dirty leeds. COYL MIIIIII

Just offer him a decent contract quick time cause he will end up playing against us and having a blinder. We need quality youth.
