Surgery to prevent Millwall chairman from flying to games

CHAIRMAN John Berylson is to undergo knee replacement surgery this year.

Berylson will not be able to fly for up to seven weeks after the operation, which is scheduled for September, and so will miss several of Millwall's home games.

But the American owner has urged fans not to worry about his absence from the stands.

"The fans shouldn't be concerned," Berylson said. "I don't have to worry about delegating either with Ian Holloway, Andy Ambler and the rest of the board running things.

"We'll be talking all the time and I'm still relatively lucid when I'm not on drugs – and when I am on drugs, I won't be making any decisions!"

Berylson will also miss Millwall's season-opener against Leeds United in August because he is overseas.

He added: "My record on the first day of the season is terrible – they've all been losses!

"I'm sort of glad I'm not going. There's an outside chance I'll see a game in late August before the knee operation. I'm also having hand surgery."

Chief executive Ambler added: "John won't be able to travel for a while. However, we'll make sure he gets footage of every game, both home and away.

"He'll be on the phone two or three times a day, as he always is. It's a big operation but nothing changes in terms of the running of the club.

"We wouldn't want the fans thinking John has lost interest in Millwall because he isn't at the games."

The greatest unsung hero for the Lions in the last 7 years.

He's always there when needed and has a quiet spirit of courage and resilience. He is the foundation on which everything else is built.

    Heal swiftly and well.

@kitch: I wouldn't say he's unsung - I think nearly all of us know how lucky we are to have JB, but having said that why don't we LITERALLY sing his name at the Leeds game. I think he'd really appreciate it. Even if it's just BE- RYL-SON BE- RYL-SON like we did with Morison. Hopefully someone else can come up with something more imaginative, although not "JB, JB, How's your knee?"!
I can't be at Leeds game myself - on holiday - but will get to the Fulham game the week after.
And I agree that he's the foundation on which everything else is built - I've been saying for years that the most important person at a football club, apart from the fans, has got to be the Chair.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. My 75 year old mum's just had both knees replaced in the last 18 months. Good as new now. Only out of action for 6 weeks at a time. No sweat johnny boy.
