Exclusive: Millwall aim to lure Matt Smith away from Leeds

MILLWALL want to sign Leeds United striker Matt Smith before the start of the new season.

The Lions's opening bid for the 25-year-old has been rejected but they will try to push through a deal before the big kick-off in August.

Smith has been the name at the top of Ian Holloway's wishlist since the club's end-of-season meeting at the start of May.

He scored 13 goals last term – including a looping header over David Forde at Elland Road – and also chalked up six assists.

But with less than 12 months remaining on his contract, Smith may now be sold and his price tag is likely to be within Millwall's budget.

However, a summer of chaos at Leeds has hampered negotiations.

Since Massimo Cellino's completed his protracted takeover of the Yorkshire side, the Italian has sacked manager Brian McDermott and dismantled the club's boardroom structure.

As a result, engaging Leeds in meaningful discussions about Smith has proved extremely difficult.

At the start of the summer there was nobody in place at Elland Road – be it a chief executive or a director of football – who the Lions could approach.

They hoped Cellino would attend the Football League AGM in June so that face-to-face talks could be held, but the former Cagliari chairman failed to show up to the summit in Portugal.

A bid was finally submitted four weeks ago via an advisor of Cellino's, Graham Bean, but it was turned down and Millwall were informed that Smith is not for sale.

However, Holloway remains unperturbed and is still monitoring the situation closely.

Leeds, who are currently on a pre-season tour of Italy, have raked in £11million from the sale of Scotland international Ross McCormack to Fulham this week.

Cellino is expected to re-invest the proceeds in his forward line and Smith could be forced down the pecking order by new recruits.

But the Lions will have to be patient in their pursuit of the frontman because, if he does become available, that is not likely to happen until next month.

Holloway has lined up more experienced alternatives in case the Smith move flounders.

Talks were held with Bobby Zamora on Tuesday but senior sources at The Den believe a deal for the QPR man is unlikely due to his wage demands.

Has the look of a Paul Moody about him, imo, and that's one player we've dearly missed over the years. The sort of foil that Gregory could play off while scoring goals himself. Weeds will want to cash in as he'll be a free agent next summer. Go get him, Ollie. COYL

We need a target man when teams play deep at the Den, I see Smith as the perfect fit. The fact that he scores as well is an added bonus. We need to chase this one down hard. Come on Ollie work your magic.

Prospect of Zamora doesn't excite me, although his record in the Chamionship is good. He just seems a bit of a journeyman these days and can't see him sweating blood for the cause.

    Cannot see this happening.
After losing McCormack to London Club Fulham.
Are they wiling to let Smith go to another London Club ?
And both rivals in the Championship.
Doubtful unless IH works his magic.

Would love to see this come off, but i think this is a tad too ambitious. Cant see Leeds letting him go unless he puts in a transfer request.

Letting 2 forwards go to championship rivals, playing your old team in your first game, give the new gaffer some insight, cant see it happening.
but then again we are talking about LUFC here. Who knows what the f##k is happening up there

@Jim28: Over 20k attendances on average in the Championship. That's a big club by any definition. Maybe an under-acheiving club for their income but still a big club

Not sure about this lump. Got his move on the back of a goal in FA Cup for Oldham, and he's been in and out of Leeds team since he moved there. And they were struggling, so how good was he? Not for me, but if IH thinks he's the answer then so be it.

@beedoscores: Well, we thought Woolford was cobblers and look what a bit of decent coaching has done for him. IH believes he can improve any player and his record stands up to that. Leeds have been in chaos for a couple of years and Smith scored 13 for them despite that., so I think he could be a good signing.

Millwall always make a song & dance about doing anything if we had a bid turned down & told he's not for sale. How can we say we couldn't negotiate. Hot air as usaul.

We've been missing this type of player since Darius Henderson upped sticks and went to Forest. If Matt Smith could provide us with the same service that Hendo did then I reckon he could be a decent signing. Can't think of too many decent big men out there right now? Excluding the HOFF of course 🙂
