Exclusive: Williams to have Millwall medical ahead of move

©

MILLWALL have won the race for MK Dons midfielder Shaun Williams.

NewsAtDen understands the Lions have fought off competition from Championship rivals Brighton to land the 27-year-old, who is set to have a medical on Monday.

Williams was given permission to hold talks with boss Ian Holloway on Thursday night after a structured deal worth up to £250,000 was agreed between the two clubs.

Head of recruitment Mick Harford, who knows Williams from his time as the Dons' assistant manager, also spoke at length with the Irishman to persuade him to come to The Den.

Brighton also tabled an offer, which was accepted, but it is thought that Williams' mind was made up after speaking to Holloway.

Personal terms were swiftly agreed on Friday and Millwall now expect Williams to complete the move early next week.

Like Holloway said he could sell a fridge to an Eskimo, Williams looks like a good player happy with that!

      @Jim28:

      MK Dons fan here.

Williams is a class act. He will do very well for you, I'm sure.

He joined us as a midfielder but for the last two seasons has played mostly at centre back. He's not the biggest or strongest but makes up for that because he's a such a good reader of the game. He tackles well but his biggest strength is his footballing ability. We like to play out from the back and it nearly always goes through him.

He takes all our attacking free kicks and penalties.

I'm pretty sure other Championship teams have been interested in the past but he's stayed because Karl Robinson convinced him we could get promotion. That's unlikely again this year so it's right he moves up a level.

      You're getting a quality footballer

Really happy with the signing. He was their player of the year and fans player of the year last season and has scored 16 goals in 97 matches. Be nice of he can chip in with a few goals. Very highly rated by MK Dons fans and as he's only played a couple of season in England, hopefully get a good few years service from him. Nice to actually take a chance on someone from a lower league who is hungry to improve and do better for themselves, and not a has been at the twilight or their career! Looks like this is the start of Hollways rebuilding, can't wait to see what else happens in the next few weeks! COYL

@tonytowneronthewing: You might be right but I think Williams has been brought in to link the midfield with the attack.. That would mean having someone with a bit of steel and holding capabilities in midfield and for me that's Bailey.
A lot of players out of contract at the end of this season, not many are going to be kept IMO.

This could prove to be a very good signing, hopefully the deal will be wrapped up as quick as possible. Good to have a quality midfielder with an eye for goal as well as someone who can play in defence if required. Welcome aboard Shaun.

Happy with this. Not a lot of money for a player with potential who is approaching his peak and still has a lot to prove i.e if he does well for us then could mean international caps especially with forde already with us... Plus he should provide some much needed goals from midfield and push the other midfielders on. Bad luck Brighton, ohhhh well sure Josh Wright is available???

2 things about him I really like.
1 , he's left footed , that always provides balance, especially in the middle of the pitch.
2 , he can score goals from direct free kicks. When was the last time we had a player that could do that ? Much needed , valuable addition to the squad.

On 16 March 2011, Williams signed for MK Dons. Despite making his name as an attacking midfielder, he has played primarily as a centre half for MK Dons, due to injuries and a small squad. At the end of the 2012/13 campaign, Williams was crowned the MK Dons Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year

Hi block 28. I don't know how far you have to travel to The Den, but for me its nearly 80 miles each way and I do shift work. My family with my children represent 4th generation MILLWALL fans. The only time I s*** off our players is when they don't give us value. This has been apparant this season till last Saturday. The majority of posts in the last three weeks have been positive and supportive of Holloway and the board of directors. This is the begining of a new era at The Den. Please don't spoil it by being negative. My family chose to move from south london in the late 50's we have continued to support when as a lad personally I had to defend my support in the playgroud against the teams sucessful (and on TV all the time) like leeds. I didn't choose to live in Kent but am happy, I had no choice what football team I supported it was only The Wall. I'm sorry I can't get to every home game, but tell you what my Dad who died in 1993 would have been very proud of the performance against Ipswich. My Mums 96, do you know what she said to me when I told her we were going to the Ipswich game? THINK OF YOU DAD!! enough said

@hernebaylion just to clear it up I was not talking about fans that live 80 miles away, I was talking about the thousands that live on millwalls doorstep, has for defending my support in a playground I went to school in poxy Charlton and loved giving it to the annaraks everyday.surely the performance against Ipswich deserves better support than 12000. these days I live near redhill so I no how hard it is.

Christ, I miss the Saturday games. Makes me laugh reading the Charlton manager saying he wants to emmulate Millwall's run last year in the FA Cup this year. Poor sod doesn't know he's two games away from being sacked!!!
    Here's my team vs. Wednesday-
    Forde
    Fredericks Shittu Lowry Malone
    Martin Bailey Trotter Williams
    McDonald Morison

@NICKOLA: D.J Campbell will definitely play, we have not been scoring goals and hopefully DJ will make the difference.

Just watched a youtube clip "going to millwall" . Fantastic insight into the rich history of the area , the end of the old den and beginnings of the new den and everything in between. Hope that the kids coming through always take an interest in the past and respect and value the people gone before them, good ,bad or ugly it's still a magnificent history and culture. Change is inevitable but respect for the past should never be lost. God, what a club this is.!!!
