Blackburn striker DJ Campbell a loan target for Millwall

MILLWALL are holding talks with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers over a loan deal for striker DJ Campbell.

Campbell, 32, was left out of Rovers' clash with Nottingham Forest yesterday, having played an hour against Manchester City in the FA Cup in midweek.

He did not travel with the Lions squad to Portugal on Sunday but NewsAtDen understands negotiations between the two clubs have progressed significantly over the weekend.

Campbell's reported £26,000-a-week wages could prove a stumbling block, however.

Holloway worked with Campbell when they were at Blackpool together, and also wanted to sign him last season when he was in charge of south London rivals Crystal Palace.

The pacey forward is currently on bail until April after being arrested last month as part of a spot-fixing investigation.

Writing in his column for The Sunday Mirror in December, Holloway said: "My first reaction, when DJ was arrested, was that the allegations couldn’t be true.

"It was also my second, third and fourth reaction as well."

If we sign him then it will be a massive assurance of intent by JB. The appointment of IH and even The backing of the westspam feller shows that that he is putting his money where his mouth is.

He killed us when he was on loan at Ipswich last season, if he can get 7 or 8 goals by the end of the season he could look cheap

@TheBermondseyBomber: He's probably still a decent goalscorer at this level, but £26k per week? That means his basic wage for just one year is over £1.35m - incredible, no wonder half the clubs in this country are in so much debt.

We're a second-division side fighting relegation - this is the type of madness that's killing our game. What message would it send out to the other players - they'll all want to be on at least £20k per week too. No thanks. I'd rather take the risk with the squad we've got.

Not for me....coming to the end of his career, £26k a week and nothing to prove. There must be better, hungrier players out there on those sort of wages (or even a % of) hungrier to impress... Wood or Kane spring to mind

@Tel: Probably not available nor willing to come for 3 months. Both Millwall and prospective players need to be assured of championship football next season. Once that happens we'll see some permanent transfers in.

We need a striker, and you have to look hard to find anyone near his class and experience at this time.
If IH lets someone go then perhaps his wages can be found.

As a loan player, you don;t have to pay all his wages. You can strike a deal with his club to pay part of it, which, as I understand it, is what we're doing with Morison.

Decent player and well proven at this level. Started his pro carer in his mid 20s and should have plenty of life left in those legs. In fairness his pace offers an option that we currently don't have , as in my opinion Morison and MacDonald naturally play a similar role and therefore don't compliment each other. I trust Holloway , he got the most out of Kevin Phillips who has a good 8years on DJ so no reason why he can't do a good job for us...

How about Leroy Lita from Swansea would be a better choice and his wages wouldn't be as high.
Or how about Marlon King joining with DJ Campbell they would have a good record, but it wouldn't be a goalscoring one but a criminal !!!!!

Think Morison & Macdonald would do better if they got more service or if the final ball was better, for me that is where we needed to improve against Ipswich yesterday. Otherwise I couldn't fault the effort and commitment, it was a breath of fresh air and as Holloway said, this should be bare minimum of what we expect and playing with that desire and hunger will stand them/us in good stead!

@Mill_Stocky: To put my point across another way, who is going to provide DJ with the service he'll require to score goals like those on the video attached to this article? While he has played as a right sided winger for Wolves etc, for me we need someone to provide decent service into the box! I don't think Keogh is the answer? Not sure Feeney is either, but perhaps Ollie sees something, but if he does then why was he on the bench and Keogh wasn't?

@jim1222: Maybe, but why look at DJ then? All I'm saying is that strikers need service and since Henry left our strikers haven't seen too much service - for the Championship Morison and Mac should be able to deliver the goods, if they received sufficient service!??

@Mill_Stocky: I think Feeney and Keogh will be the first two to go. Marquis out on loan. The likes of Dunne, Smith etc could hang in there or be given free transfers. Either way, some are going and some are coming in. Can only be good.

Lads, don,t let's worry about cost. We have a brilliant chairman who knows all about that side of things, so if he says it's o k. Then it's o k. Question is d j Campbell, very quick, yes. Eye for a goal, yes. So if Ollie wants him, and we trust Ollie's judgement then this must surely be a good move for us. No point talking about Kane / wood etc , they or their clubs may not want that deal.

Who says anyone wanted to come here? Players want to play for a manager like Holloway which will certainly help attracting players, as for clubs letting them come, it's simply a money game. The only reason Blackburn would offload that piece of s*** is because he is getting paid to much to sit on the bench and lose some money in game betting.

Who ever we attract it has to be better than him, surely?

We have to judge IH's judgement on this one, he knows what he wants, if anyone can motivate then it seems he can so am sure if Campbell signs he will be scoring and making goals. We need a heavyweight up front.

He deserves a proper chance IMO as the rest of the squad have been given that opportunity.

Don't want DJ, get someone whose 22 not 32 with something to prove if we are to get another striker.

Not sure DJ Campbell's is what we need. With a high wage and a court trial coming up, I'm not convinced a relegation battle will be on top of his priorities. I personally think we need to go the way of the Fredericks signing and bring in another hungry energetic youngster with a point to prove. What about Jesse Lingard? Easily a smaller wage than what Campbells on, and possibly could link up the midfeld well with the forward line.

Listen i wasnt being disrepectful to your support, cheers for the comments. For one reason or another the rovers fans never took to the guy, probably because of the way he was signed by Appleton ,who was his mate at Blackpool, and also was injured most of the time. And his contract never in a million years was justified by his effort when he did get a game. Anyway hope he does the biz for your lads, except when we play you. All the best. By the way do you not fancy Leon Best as well? Another one with his head up his a***.
