Millwall boss: Martin chomping at the bit after Leeds assist

STEVE Lomas has hinted Lee Martin may feature more regularly for Millwall after he "showed his quality" in his substitute appearance against Leeds United.

But Lomas believes the fact that the winger is being restricted to a place on the Lions bench is testament to the strength of the squad at his disposal.

"At the minute we've got a few boys chomping at the bit to get in the team, which is good for the club," he said. "Lee has been a little bit unfortunate to be left out of the team so far.

"He showed his quality with a great pass to Martyn Woolford for the first goal and he's been working hard in training. We haven't been able to get him starting but he's not far off."

Martin will be hoping to involved when Millwall travel to Birmingham tonight.

The Lions have now won three on the bounce and Lomas feels the key to his side's recent success has been their ability to stay in games for longer, having conceded early goals on a regular basis at the start of the season.

He said: "You've got to pay teams respect – in the Championship, teams aren't going to stand off you and let you pop the ball about. In this division, games are very much a battle for 75 minutes and then the game stretches and you get a little bit more space.

"The first half is all about winning individual battles, first headers and second balls, and when the game opens up hopefully we will be the ones with the bit of quality to create chances, and that's what we did against Leeds.

"But Saturday is gone now and Birmingham will be a tough game. They lost on Saturday but St Andrew's is never an easy place to go to."

With Morison available again, the squad for tonight is looking strong and I fancy a win. Oh, and there is Lowry available, best leave him at home me thinks.

@beedoscores: Lowry needs to out a few games and think about WHY he keeps getting booked and sent off, before getting his place back.

If he's hoping to get Martin in the starting line-up then it indicates 442 away from home. Personally, I think we'll do well to get a point tonight. A win at home and a draw away gets you into the top six any season. We're a bit off averaging 2 points a game presently but a few more good results will see us up there.
As for Lowry, he'll be on the bench tonight. He's not going to drop Malone that's for sure.

@NICKOLA: Martin prefers playing down the middle in a more attacking role though so could play in either the 442 or 433 formation

Agreed but Woolford, McDonald, Waghorn and Morison are going to be difficult for him to oust. That was a cracking pass to Woolford on Saturday for the first goal but I do see him as a wide man. Not complaining though. To have him, Chaplow etc. on the bench is very impressive.

@NICKOLA: You never know what Lomas is going to do i swear i read he is the only manager without a player playing a solid 90 for everygame so far

Please SL don't mess about with the squad too much, I have to watch this match sat with my work mates in the blues end - it would be nice to have 3 points to wind them up with!

Hi Lads, you should take a glance at the Barclays Football League Division 1 league table for the 1st October 1988/89 season, 25 years ago this week. After six matches you'll find the scum sitting rock bottom of the table posting stats of played 6, won 1, drawn 1, lost 4. Nothing too unusual there, you might think, but what makes it all the better & more significant is the fact that sitting pretty at the top of the table having played 6, won 4, drawn 2, lost 0 is... MILLWALL! Yes, 25 years ago this week was one of the greatest weeks in Millwall's history! - lets celebrate that tonight with another win COYL!!!

Only seen the Leeds game on iplayer and the goals pleased me. I dont have fears for tonight about scoring, but the defence to me leaves a bit concerned, lucky not to conceed against leeds.
The forward play has improved this year with the new introductions. The new boys are or seem to be fitting in well

Based on saturdays game Martin played great out on the right. Maybe he was flattered by a weak performance from the Leeds left back, but he was much better than Henry's final brief appearances this season, with great link up play for the goal. The team is finding consistency again with Trotter and Abdou in the middle, and now SL seems to have worked out Bailey and Derry can't play together it would be a mistake to mess things around. Stick Moro and Waghorn in up top. Job done!

@tomahawk: You are right but his first 3 touchs were very Sunday morning league, but after that he settled down and turned in an acceptable preformace. Before he was injuried he did look very useful so lets hope he can keep fit and keep up the level of play to push for a starting place.

Which is what both the fans and SL would want as if he has the choice of more than his first 11 then as all managers say that is a problem they like, COYL!!! keep this run going and do the brummies tonight.

I have always liked Lee Martin and was really impressed that we managed to sign him up.
He is better than Henry and Feeney and could be a top player for us.
    Good Luck Lee!
