Report: Millwall 3-1 Blackpool

GOALS from Liam Trotter, Nicky Bailey and Steve Morison handed Steve Lomas his first league win in charge over league-leaders Blackpool.

Millwall fell behind when Tom Ince drilled home from 20 yards but Trotter cancelled that goal out with a well-taken penalty on the stroke of half time.

Bailey edged the Lions in front when he volleyed in from a corner and Morison made sure of the win with a thumping finish three minutes later.

Lomas made six changes from the 5-1 defeat to Derby County, with Alan Dunne, Paul Robinson, Trotter, Jimmy Abdou, Scott Malone all starting.

Andy Keogh, Danny Shittu and Shaun Derry were dropped from the squad altogether, while Morison returned to the bench after a hernia injury.

Visiting 'keeper Matt Gilks was forced to make the first save of the evening when he parried Waghorn's long-range piledriver behind for a corner.

Waghorn had an even better chance to break the deadlock in the 14th minute when he pounced on Mark Beevers' knock down in the area, only to stab the ball straight at Gilks.

Blackpool took the lead against the run of play 90 seconds later when Beevers' poor header fell to Ince on the edge of the area and he drove the ball home through a crowd of players.

Millwall thought they had come up with an instant equaliser when, on their next attack, Martyn Woolford's header smacked the inside of the post and deflected clear via a touch off Gilks, who was rooted to the spot.

Despite falling behind, the Lions remained the better side despite but were reminded of the Tangerines' threat on the break when an incisive counter attack ended with Ince curling wide.

But Lomas' side hauled themselves level on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot. Isaiah Osbourne was penalised for handball in the midst of a goalmouth scramble and Trotter sent Gilks the wrong way from 12 yards.

In the 49th minute, Beevers found himself unmarked in the area but headed well over from Woolford's corner.

Millwall carved out another opportunity from another Woolford corner shortly afterwards, but Trotter mistimed his effort and the ball went harmlessly wide.

But the Lions finally made the most of one of Woolford's set pieces in the 72nd minute when Bailey arrived late to steer home a first-time volley.

Celebrations had barely died down when Morison held off his marker and slammed an unstoppable drive into the top corner to make it 3-1 just moments later.

Substitute Richard Chaplow could have added a fourth goal in the dying stages when he got on the end of Malone's low cross, but his shot was blocked.

Hands up, who saw us getting that result?

Puts us up to 19th, just shows how quickly things can change at this very early stage of the season.

By all accounts a far better performance and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Robbo and Abdou back in starting 11, not past it IMO.

@MFC Lion: My hands are up! Bottom v top, midweek footy, made for a shock result. Unfortunately I put us in a treble with Huddersfield and Bolton. What I couldn't see was the apparently magnificent performance, particularly after going a goal down. Dumbfounded doesn't cover it.

Lets see what happens against Charlton on Saturday before we pass any more verdicts on SL.
I listened on R5LSX and it made a nice change to hear the opposition commentator sound miserable.

Must be honest that I'd given up all hope on Lomas, but he'll soon get us fully behind him if he gets the team regularly playing like this.

It's amazing how the table, the fixture list and everything Millwall can look so different after one good performance. It looked bleak to me at 19:40pm and now after just one match it has a totally different complexion.

The worry up to this game for me was the lack of shots, corners, chances created. Let's hope the whole club see things in a different light, relax and start expressing themselves?

    Outstanding effort.
Woolford has been slated on here and written off as 'deadwood' but he's shown Real Wall attitude, forced his way into the side and was arguably man of the match tonight just ahead of Jimmy, Robbo and Trotts who all put in fantastic shifts.
    Onwards and upwards.

PS: Last season we only took six points from our first seven League games - two in and five defeats - before going on that Chris Wood inspired 13-match unbeaten run.
This season we've taken five points from seven games and Waghorn looks like he could form a decent partnership with MacDonald and/or Morisson.
Maybe things aren't quite as bad as they seemed before tonight!

Just brilliant, I could not believe it when I see the result on my phone. Had a drink just to make sure i was not dreaming it. But first all our friends on here who suggested the team line up were more or less right and look what it achieved Well done. I was not at the game but the passion from the team must have been exhilarating. It was a not a lucky win either by all accounts we took BP to the cleaners. One thing for certain is how much confidence it will give the players.

Hope the moaners keep quiet for a bit now and get behind the team and SL. But let's not get carried away early days still. Well done you LIONS!!

At last Robbo and jimmy back we had a spine in the side and we tried to play football on the floor but hit it long down the flanks for Morrison to run onto that's what he wants not a long ball whe he has to win it in the air and then get it under control. Great energy tonight from every player SL should be very pleased with that result but must remember what I said earlier today you need Millwall players in your side you can't just throw them to one side, they started it tonight for us and the rest of the team stepped up with them. Robbo and Jimmy must be first names on the team sheet from now on. They are Millwall through and through. Great night great game great performance, More of the same on Saturday then bring on Leeds.

    Just home now
Absolute s*** first half of football all to predictable even with six changes but that said their goal was against run of play but the defending was woeful yet again.
The penalty came at exactly the right time
And rattled the f*** out of b.pool.
What a smashing second half great side foot volley from bailey and a typical stevie Morison special - over the right shoulder one bounce and right foot smash over the keeper into the top corner.
F*** em all utd s*** c**** and Liverpool.
Perfect response and a great warm up for Saturday lunch time.
Well done wall and shoot me if you want
    Well done SL.

@thecolumbusblock: harsh maybe but honest ? Absolutely.
Too predictable IMO. Second half completely different. The defending for their goal was shocking I counted four players around the penalty spot marking one player with no one on the edge marking ince. But that said it was a million times better than Saturday.
Expect a thriller on Saturday bailey and Morison are gonna run em ragged.

@lukesmithmfc: first game for me tonight as I have been away and working but....

First half I would say we were nervous as opposed to s****. We completely bossed the whole half but didn't take our chances.

Defense were very poor for their goal, totally against the run of play. However, I thought and said at half time that we always looked the more likelier.

Some great individual performances especially up front and the midfielders.

Wasn't impressed with trotter though. Didn't looms my different from last season in my eyes - although credit for keeping his cool for the penalty. Especially as he was being wound up big time.

Especially impressed with bailey and abdou. They absolutely bossed midfield and all the front boys put in a great shift.

Worried about woolford in a helping/defensive role and thought he left malone exposed sometimes.

Overall a great result and very well deserved.

Nobody in the side played badly and lots of them played really well, but no one has mentioned Bailey. He knew he was awful on Saturday - see his comments the other day - and he really rolled up his sleeves tonight. You could FEEL the effort he was making right from the off and he looked more like the player he seemed to be when he came.
One other thing that was noticeable was that when their goal went in, against the run of play, the heads didn't immediately drop and they kept on going. We needed a bit of luck, especially when we had that great effort by Woolford that hit the post, and we got it when we got the penalty (haven't actually seen it on telly yet but clearly the Blackpool players didn't think much of the decision!), and Trotter did fantastically well to put it away under ENORMOUS pressure after such a long delay. If he had missed then I think heads WOULD have gone down.
Only negative note - Morison having a go at the ball boy - twice!

@waterloolion: bailey was superb but that's his game and is epected of him.
Morison having a moan at ball was a shame but he was trying to run down the clock which is something he probably picked up at Norwich who get their ball boys to do that if they're winning. Wouldn't worry too much about that. As for the pen it looked to me like the ref gave offside hence all the moaning and confusion and as you said well done trotts for keeping composed.
      Can't wait for Saturday

      @waterloolion:

Morro wasn't having a go at the ball boy. He was telling him to slow down and not to give Blackpool the ball back too quickly 🙂

Oh yes, and the biggest difference of all - Robbo holding it together at the back and not getting out-jumped for crosses all the time like Shittu has been all season.

    WELL DONE Millwall!
I sincerely hope Mr Lomarse will start with the same 11 against the mugs and have Marshall, Connolly, Lowry, Chaplow, Henry, Martin and Morrison on the bench.

As for The Shitts, Derry, Keogh, Feeney, Smith, Easter, Marquis, its time to watch and learn and be ready to come in and play your part.

    COYL!

First lesson to any budding footballer out there, you can have skill, ability but if you don't want it, you won't get it.

Step forward Sir James Abdou, an example that giving 100% will always triumph over 70% of a more technical player.

    Harry Cripps a la Francois?

The first 15 minutes we were all over them and they scored against the run of play and the crowd did not get on the players backs because everyone could see the boys were trying and it is also thanks to the people who posted on here!
We also hit the post which was unlucky.
True to form we had a s*** Ref and a s*** Lino on the West side.
Trotters goal just before half time sent us in optimistic.
Second half we went up a gear Nick Bailey's goal was quality, Morro was on fire when he came on and what a goal he scored.
There was a spine in Millwall tonight Robbo, Dunnie, Jimmie and Morro when he came on.
There was also a blend of old and new.
But as Dunnie said that was old school.
And we all want more of the same week in week out!
For those critics this is a work in progress.
The players do care passionately about this club and I had the one off privilege to see that in the players lounge after the game.
Onwards and upwards and lets hope the worm has turned.
The glass is half full not half empty lets hope we become consistent.

Just got back after a long trip home. What a game, thought we bossed the whole game to be fair, their only real chance of the first half brought about their goal but to be honest Fordey or Beevers should have dealt with it before it got to Ince (only negative of the game). All the players involved looked hungry and actually played with Pride tonight. Finally they played for the shirt. Pressed and forced Blackpool in to making some mistakes at the back which was nice to see. Robbo, Bailey, Malone, Morrison Etc all looked different class tonight but the outstanding player of the night for me was definately Jimmy, really put in a shift and showed up a supposed 15m midfielder in the name of Tom Ince. Looking forward to Saturdays game and hoping for another 3 points. COYL!!!!

Well that's the best 4 hours sleep i've had before work for a long time, The lads played with pride and passion, really pleased the crowd stuck by the team especially after going 1 down against the run of play. A massive boost for the lads going into Saturday's game and it was well overdue. Robbo was solid and Jimmy rebuilt and running with the ball, Morro looked sharp and hungry and fully justified having his op. A hats off to Woolford as he worked his nuts off again along with all the lads. Bailey congratulations on your first Millwall goal and a really good shift, hope you score against your old Anorak buddies on Saturday. COYL.

Now the dust has settled from last night, we have now sold nearly all our away allocation for saturday the players and staff must be buzzing. I've never enjoyed being at work so much surrounded by so many WHU fans, having the satisfaction of knowing that nothing they can say can detract from a great performance last night which left everyone feeling positive. SL hasn't got carried away with it which is nice to see, we now move on to the next game. Lets not think about play-offs and cup runs, lets just rise above all the crap we hve had to endure and focus on charlton, then Leeds....remember slowly slowly catchy monkey....... one game at a time but please keep backing our boys, last night was amazing not one bit of bother from any fans because only the real fans turned up last night, lets hope more come back but lets leave the idiots at home. SL you now know what managing Millwall is all about and your new signings have learn't from Robbo, Jimmy, Dunnie and Trotts what being a Millwall player is all about, take it on the chin and keep moving forwards, we will back you if you play like last night. Well done everyone.

I was at the home game against Derby , it was a terrible performance and I had already got my tickets beforehand for this game against Blackpool and was dreading it, but it was back to the gutsy working hard Millwall performance and at last not afraid to shoot on target at goal and we got our reward , when done you Lion's , I had a better 60 mile journey back home than saturday.
