Report: Millwall 1-5 Derby County

DERBY County turned up the pressure on Millwall manager Steve Lomas with a 5-1 victory at The Den.

The Rams were the better side from start to finish and, after goals from Jake Buxton and Craig Bryson, their cause was helped when Shane Lowry was sent off for a high eta-i.org/ambien.html challenge.

Bryson duly added a third goal with a stunning long-range drive into the top corner, before debutant Martyn Waghorn pulled one back for the Lions 15 minutes from time.

But Bryson soon completed his hat-trick to make it 4-1 and substitute Mason Bennett sealed the rout late on with another clinical finish.

Not there today but sounded another poor performance. I'm not one for knee jerk changes but can we afford to keep lomas on as manager? One good thing to come out of this is we can give Malone a chance at LB, looked good in the games I saw him play in.

    That's it then.
Good squad but obviously out of his depth.
Lomas and Harford will have to go and I expect Harris to be put in temporary charge and see how it goes. It can't get any worse.

We all wanted Lomas to succeed, but we can't afford to carry on like this. The fans have lost faith in him and it looks like the players have too. We'll be lucky to get 8,000 there on Tuesday night. The board have got to swallow their pride and admit they made a big mistake in appointing such an unproven manager.

I would try to get a refund on your ticket, I was close to walking out at half time but gave them a chance to claw a draw back.

Ended up walking out after the third goal. Can't see anything improving, luckily my sons has football training on Tuesday so I won't be at the Den to watch Blackpool beat us.

Can't wait for Lomas' comments post match. What positives you gona find from that? Any close to that win you keep talking about?

Problem is a win every 7 games is as good as none. We will get relegated and by a long way. Lomas will be gone after the Charlton game. His only hope is to win the next two, which wont happen, so who's next in the hot seat then?

We do have quality players I have no doubt, just need a quality manager to utilise them.

Well done Waggers, your well on the way to being our top scorer!

Full of optimism not so long ago. Watched some good players coming on board but I know when the game's up. 2 points from a possible 18, a minus 9 goal difference and bottom of the league. League leaders next.
    The players are not responding.
Sorry Lomas but you have to fall on your sword now. If you don't then Berylson and Ambler will have to do it for you.

@NICKOLA: Personally I'd like to see Ambler and the FOTB go as well - too many mistakes over the past few years.

I'm seriously starting to wonder about JB as well. Loves to tell us what he's doing for the club, but all we've seen for the past few years is has-been after has-been come in on frees & loans. Maybe if he was in the stand each game he'd see what we have to watch each week too.

I'd like to get the knives out as well believe me but I think you have to look at it differently.
Berylson gives the money to the manager via teh CEO. Jackett didn't get Wood but brought in s****. Lomas spread the money around and got in a lot of good players rather than blow it on one or two.
I do agree that if Berylson wasn't as physically remote as he usually is, he'd have a different perspective on things. I don't think he was there today so probably relies on Ambler and the board for feedback. If he had been there, he would have witnessed some hostility from the very low attendence.
I can't see us beating Blackpool and I think the board will be of the same opinion. Like all of us, Berylson doesn't like admitting to mistakes, and firing a manager after 6 games won't be what he wants to do but I can't see any other choice.

It the manager who sets the team up and if he get it wrong we get punished, i would like to thank the board for the mess they have got us into or is it good thinking on JB side to put us in to administration so he company can buy it back for redevelopment, then it would be goodbye millwall.

Can the conspiracy theorists please stop now? A Board of Directors of a football club have made a bad appointment, shock horror, it happens. When the new, more competent manager comes in we are in better shape on the playing side than we have been for years, although I think any bets on top whatever finishes or promotion for this season can now be binned.

Ok now even I (who has backed lomas and the team 100% so far) feel Lomas needs to go thoroughly outplayed on our own patch and given a proper shoeing! JB says full the den - I have to agree with most now and say why should we?! We've got a tactically clueless man in charge of what is, on paper, a vastly improved squad from last year... Something's not right and it must be SL

Today was the day he officially lost control of the situation. He's had funds Jackett could only have dreamt of and it's still every bit as pathetic as the last days of Jackett, when we usually had a solid defence at least. All he's done is replaced an honest, limited League 1 team with a jaded team of Championship has-beens.

It's so easy for teams however average they are. Have a man sitting on McDonald, keep your defensive shape and you're laughing. I know I was calling for Feeney or Martin to get a chance on RW but to replace Henry, who does want the ball, with Keogh was eccentric. The Keogh of his first season had an ESP relationship with Kane and was one of the calmest one-on-one finishers I've ever seen, the Keogh of today offers nothing at all as a footballer. When Chaplow, Woolford etc go into hiding it's open season.

The blue lion is gone and I have no idea what to do about the home form now. Three good performances away where the team bore no relation to the utter disgrace we saw today, it must be psychological. Are the players scared of us? We're angry because we want them to grow a pair and show some spirit, the more they withdraw into themselves the angrier the crowd will get. I was willing to give Lomas a chance but who could watch that and still think he can handle this job?

    Last 9 seasons
8 Teams have had 2 points or less after 6 games
4 were relegated, including ourselves in 05/06
Highest final finishing position was 15th!
Average final finishing position was 20th
Highest final points total was 58
Average final points total is 48.5
5 of the 8 clubs sacked their manager during the season. 2 in September, 3 in December
3 of the 5 who sacked their manager still went down.
We are already in big big trouble, so don't believe the 'plenty of games to go' bllx.
I still think, that with this squad we will survive, it just depends on how stubborn the Board is over retaining Lomas and who and when they appoint next.

Bit of an overreaction on here though! F***** hell, talk of administration when we are financially secure & there is not even a hint that berylson wants to pull the plug. Talk of Relegation, when we haven't even got to christmas yet & 1 win would take us out of the relegation zone. Someone saying we're going to "mirror wolves demise", well unless we spend a few years in the premiership, get relegated, then get relegated again with a good squad, I fail to see the logic behind that post. Lomas has to go, and this has got to be the worst start in our history, BUT things can and hopefully will change for the better, but only when we get someone who is capable to manage this team. Calm down, i honestly believe we will still be in the championship this time next season.

@82wall: Well said 82. But I think there is one thing that we are all agreed on now. I said Lomas should be given nine games from the start, but I didn't dream that we would start so badly. He has nothing to lose on Tuesday against the leaders so might get one more shot at clinging on. If KJ was still in charge I'd be backing us to win as he always had the ability to pull that kind of result out of the bag after a shocker like today.

@82wall: I agree with you Lion. With the squad we have got now I still think we will be ok, whether that is with SL in charge is another question. The board are not to blame, JB has more than backed the team. If Lomas proves to be a bad appointment, as someone said previously, it happens. Mind you, with the behaviour of the berks in the Dockers he might decide he's had enough. We were shocking today from the time we conceded the first goal!

Started bright with quick give and go football, then the defense let us down. For some reason looked nervous from the off and shittu was playing like a man who had just got out of bed for opening 20mins. We were non existent for the first goal, and Forde added to the mayhem with some calamity goal keeping (was near the penalty spot when second cross come in). Forde was poor in general, horrible distribution and got no where near any of their goals. Connelly was equally shocking, looked tired after 15mins and added to the tension with sloppy back passes and school boy first touches...
Midfield then became vacant. Derry had a shocker, with short hospital passes and slack marking... His poor clearance allowed second goal. Bailey was off the pace equally and from 1st minute was arguing with team mates and ref, resulting in weak booking half way through first half!!! Chaplow looked out of position and and woolford has no hope of beating a full back...
On a plus I though MacDonald had a great game, first touch and hold up was classed but due to midfields failings was forced to drop deep and do most of this good work near the half way line. Plus lovely lay off for Waghorns goal.. Keogh ran his socks of, work rate won possession back on occasion but had no one to pass to all to often...
Lowery deserved to go, regardless if he won the ball he still left his foot in and caught Hughes with his studs directly infront of ref... Waggorn scoredand Trotter looked positive when on but game was already lost?!!

In fairness Derby were much the better team even before sending off, had calm compitent players an their shape before picking off our weaknesses. Will Hughes is mustard!!

IMO Lomas has two games to save his job, anything less than 6 points (or 4 with great performances) and he should go so we can stop the rot before its too late...

just got back i think theirs no place for lomas now , a good squad of players but no leader on the park , lowry was shocking , midfield looks so disjointed its a crime , sideways passing all day , dont see the bailey that played for anoraks , no goal in him , mcdonald was diff class , trotter looked better in ten mins than the rest have looked all the game , dont see any choice for the board , hartford and that so called fitness coach must follow , its a poor poor showing.

I can understand everyone's reaction to a 5-1 drubbing but I'm not sure the panic button needs hitting yet. We have got a better squad than a lot of teams in this division and I think all that's needed is to find the right combination and stick with it. Most of our goals against are from set pieces. Get Robbo back in to marshall the defence and we stop the rot at the back. Don't forget we have the best goalie in the division. We will score goals with the quality strikers we have now got. We just have to get the defence sorted. I think SL has been so busy getting our attack sorted, he's neglected the defence. Sort out the back four with Robbo in and we're on the way. Losing 5-1 is embarrassing but stick the plug back in and the new boys will start scoring. Anyone agree or am I still asleep?

@Profiler4: I was saying the same thing but the best goalie in the division is looking shaky and last years defence are looking all the over place. Decent midfielders are looking average and strikers that should be scoring are not and don't look like scoring. There is a difference between requiring fine tuning or a major overhaul at the moment we need the latter.

I share elements of your optimism and struggle to see who we woukd replace lomas with let alone who would be willing... Today the defense looked like ice skaters and majority of the players in blue looked like they wanted to go home after the first goal.. Our home record is shocking, our team appears to perform better away from and I can't help thinking that the atmosphere us "supporters" create (ie lightening fast negativity) doesn't help, and is something that has to be looked at regardless who the manager is... I will be going to the blackpool game and still think with some of the players we have things can improve but one things for sure it needs to be quick!!!

As a ginger myself I find the the ginger c*** comments hilarious. I guess your birds tried and prefered it to the flacid performances they normally get at home. Ginger is the future my friends, just ask her I doors. 😉

Nah, their wives/birds just like an angry ginger man slipping it to'em, nothing to do with prejudice, just inferiority and the crushing realism that we succeed where they fail when they get their once in a year chance on the borthday night....poor bleeders. I almost feel sorry for the obsolete f******.

Just got back home after are 280 mile round trip, thought I was going to witness the Lions first win. What a shock! My heart sank when I saw the team selection. No Waghorn no Trotter. We started well for first 10-15 min but
Forde looked shaky and was indiorectly responsible for their first goal-instead of catching the ball he punched it out to an opponent who lobbed it back in for them to score. Our midfield was all over the place at times and were giving needless balls away. Mcdonald worked hard but had no link up with Keogh who was worse than useless. The sending off was criminal and was the nail in the coffin.
I felt sorry for our defence who were constantly under pressure as the forwards could not hold the ball up. Shittu despite a couple of wayward passes was Millwall's most solid defender.
Bringing on Waghorn and Trotter gave the team some shape and for a time looked more menacing . Trotter put through a superb ball for Waghorn to score a sweet goal.
However SL's tactics were comic cuts. Why not play Feeney down one of the flanks? Why play Chaplow out of position? I hate to admit it but I think Mr Lomas has lost the plot and should take the high road back to Scotland.

That was truly DISGUSTING! I have seen some toot over the last 35 years but that was beyond belief!

Lomarse is out of his depth as is Harford and the fitness coach would be better employed as billy bunter!

We have the best squad in many a year but NO ONE to manage, coach or put a bit of fitness and discipline into the players and that has got to change and quickly.

The way forward for us is to appoint someone who has seen it and done it and that man is Tony Pulis. The Football would be boring but he would instil in our boys the need to STAND UP and SHOW SOME PRIDE when they wear a Millwall shirt. With Neil Harris as his assistant I cannot see it failing.

    Over to you J.B...

      @darrenjamesdj:
Like the Pulis suggestion mate. Pulis would probably bring Dave Kemp with him, leaving Harris where he is to carry on experiencing the management arena. I know managers need a chance, but that normally goes hand in hand with showing signs that things are improving. Sometimes slowly sometimes quicklly. With this lot it appears not at all.

I got home from work etc at 5pm and saw the result on 'Final Score' and couldn't believe my eyes at first.
Once upon a time, many years ago, visiting teams and their supporters used to feel intimidated when coming to The Den. I doubt if the teams do now.
I then heard talk of 'crowd trouble' on R5L, which even they admitted was about 40 people (out of 9,523), plus one bloke running onto the pitch. I always think that if we were some club up north then such 'events' wouldn't get a mention.
I heard SL's post-match interview and he sounded very depressed; I wonder if he wished he had stayed at St Johnstone, who are doing OK in the SPL. Has anyone else ever noticed that apart from the big Glasgow and Edinburgh clubs, match attendance in Scotland is on a level with leagues one and two in England? Being near the top of the table up there is not the same as in England.
A book and film for SL's stay at Millwall, like Brian Clough and 'The Damned United' may be coming our way soon. How about 'Thrown to the Lions'?
Some people seem to hope that Neil Harris will replace SL. Respected former players as managers are no guarantee of success. But lets hope for the best if that happens. If we win against Blackpool and (more importantly) Charlton, then SL may have a future at the club. I wish him and the team well.

So , we get rid of Lomas. Will the new bloke have a magic wand ? We have better players than last season. The players have to take full responsibility at the moment. It's so easy to jump all over Lomas , I just really don't know what's best. Does he deserve time to turn this round ? Or , sack him and spend more money on a new managerial appointment. ? I'm at a loss to be honest.

I'm now calm enough to post a comment about Saturdays game.
1st goal- Shittu jumped like he was in cement with the attacker who scored.
2nd and 3rd goals- Long range efforts, both went in.
4th goal-No closing down and too much ball watching.
5th goal- Team had given up which was bad to see.
Derby had six efforts on target and scored five, that don't happen often. However once they got the first the game was done and dusted. Sorry but if we lose to Blackpool then the board must consider replacing SL or relegation becomes a certainty not a maybe.
Sad times for my beloved club.
