Millwall boss delighted with "creative" wheeling and dealing

STEVE Lomas says using the funds freed up by Dany N'Guessan's exit to extend Shaun Derry's loan and sign Martyn Waghorn is "the deal of the century."

N'Guessan, who had just under a year remaining on his contract at The Den, joined Swindon Town on a free transfer at the start of the month.

And the Lions have since redistributed the Frenchman's wages on keeping hold of Derry until January and adding Waghorn to their ranks on a 93-day loan.

"I feel that to get Shaun Derry and Martyn Waghorn in for Dany N'Guessan's contract is the deal of the century, to be honest," Lomas said.

"That is proper wheeling and dealing for two high calibre players. The chairman and Andy Ambler told me to be creative, and between the three of us we have been.

"We all worked very hard to get these deals done for more or less the equivalent of Dany's contract, which is nothing short of miraculous.  At one stage it looked like we'd have only one fit striker for Saturday, so the board, the chairman and Andy are to be commended."

Millwall have also completed the signing of free agent Paul Connolly on a four-month deal.

Lomas said: "We've got a player who has made over 300 appearances in the Championship, so he's very experienced. The drawback is that Paul has been without a club for a while but I believe, by bringing him in, we're taking Millwall forward."

Meanwhile, chief executive Ambler has revealed that the Lions may have to keep paying the wages of fringe players they want to send out on loan to other clubs.

John Marquis has been the subject of an approach from Leyton Orient – but the O's can only afford £500-per-week of the striker's salary.

Ambler said: "We may have to let some of our players go out for four weeks for next to nothing so that they can keep fit and play games. There comes a point when we have to let them out rather than keep playing them in our U21s side."

So if he's on £4k we still have to pay £3,500 they pay £500

        I'd rather pay £3,500 than £4,000.
Let him and the others go out on loan, they're on our books anyway so any savings, no matter how small, must be a step in the right direction.

@dpendet: So how much is Dunny on KJ has left some really good contracts that equate to the fooball equivalent of wepons of mass destruction for our club, this contract mess is going to take some sorting, why would they leave when they have got really good contracts here.

If JM is on about 4K what are some of the more senior guys on who jus make up the numbers week in week out, I know we only have 2 points but if this carries on we could be in big trouble,. where is the cheif ex on this as he must have gien KJ the rubber stamp for these inflated contracts. AA start giving some explanation on div 1 &2 players that are at the club who are on good championship wages.

If these wages are examples of Jacketts skills in the transfer market Wolves will need every penny of the parachute cash!

    Could we loan Ambler out?

@jim1222: didn't you mean "fridge" players,as they seem to freeze at the sight of goal !.
Most of the players brought in have been round the block a few times so they are bound to have a few aches and pains from old injuries, proper conditioning and training should sort them out ?
A win will also help !.
      C'mon u lions.

Hhhmmmmm.....loan that includes 28 day recall option....sceptical to say the least. ..if he starts scoring...he'll be off before you can say 'League 1!'...would of preferred 'Option to buy'

@millwallphil: yeah you can bet that Nigel Pearson will enjoy recalling Waggie if he starts scoring. Hopefully the club have negotiated some restrictions to that clause and maybe even a buy-out clause in January if we decide we want him permanently.

@glyngo: There is no chance of us getting him permanently! Either he'll do well and get a new deal at Leicester of he'll move on a free next summer but we wont be getting him! we're broke!

See that Jackett is trying to offload his highly rated defender-Roger Johnson. Don't know anything about him at all, but maybe we can swap him for some of the players Jackett left behind at Millwall that he thought so highly of.

Not sure about 'deal of the century' but it was certainly a smart bit of business. Two decent thoroughly professional players for the price of one stroppy moaner!!!
Let's be honest, at the end of last season if someone had predicted we'd start 2013-2014 with experieced, Championship-class players like Morisson, MacDonald, Martin, Bailey, Chaplow, Waghorn, Connolly, Derry and Bywater in our ranks we'd have been ecstatic.
Once they're all fit we'll be fine.

Got some very good players there Lonz and I'd give Lomas an A+ for his incoming players.
Not such a high mark for his outgoings but he's trying to offload players that presumably don't want to go. Even if we have to pay 90% of their wages to see them put on loan that's got to be the way to go.

Well Dany (I never had any gripes about him) did something good for the club when he waved his contract which he did not have to do. But he wanted to play football not sit on the sidelines just as Waghorn wants to. So it turns out good for both players and the club. Tomorrows game against Derby will be a real test for everyone especially the players who will be nervous at home. I just wish some supporters would stop slagging off our players at home. A few only admittedly but it does not do anything for their confidence or morale.
I will be getting behind the team tomorrow am 100% everyone here will. I predict a 2-0 or 2-1 win.

@Peckhamlad: I agree Peckham - everyone seems to say that we have the best fans in the world (especially on this site) because we get behiind our time and support them through thick and thin..... not really the case these days - I see and hear more negative comments and chants on the websites and at games than I do positive nowadays!! Hopefully a good performance and a nice 3 points tomorrow will shut all these moaners up for a couple of days at least! COYL!!

Wheeling and dealing is all we as a club can do, as a climb up the division is what we need, and new faces May do the trick.
As were broke we've gotta clear space for someone new to come in.
Got to hand it to SL and the Board they're trying very hard to overcome a sticky situation here.
Lets Hope that we sream roller Derby tomorra

It may be 'creative' but it is also short term, Waghorn will go mid December, Derry and Connolly in January. meanwhile the so called 'Deadwood' remain, some will be here for awhile thanks to KJ & AA.
according to one source the contracts are up for Forde, Lowry, Trotter, Henry, Keogh, Feeney, Martin, Easter, Dunne, Marquis, Smith and Osborne on 30-6-2014, a few of these are always mentioned as ones to get shot of but others like Wright, Abdou, Beevers, Malone, Woolford are all on contracts till 30-6-2015 which makes them very difficult to shift out.
