Millwall target McDonald has "shaken hands" on Boro exit

© Actionplus

MIDDLESBROUGH boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed that Millwall target Scott McDonald is on the verge of leaving the Riverside Stadium.

NewsAtDen reported last week that McDonald was being eyed by the Lions as their bid for Bristol City's Steve Davies stalled, and it now seems that the Australian has reached a verbal agreement with Boro to cancel his contract.

McDonald was left out of the Middlesbrough squad that drew with Hartlepool in a friendly on Saturday and Mowbray admitted afterwards that the 29-year-old's exit is imminent.

He told BBC Tees: "There's nothing conclusive as far as I know standing here at ten past five – but things have been going on. Scott did  come in and shake some hands the other day but we shouldn't really talk about it until the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted.

"The paperwork hasn't been signed but there's a fair chance Scott will move on. We can then move on with our own recruitment and maybe this helps us in terms of our targets a bit.

"Our supporters won't know the internal workings of the football club and sometimes there has to be an out to create some ins. That doesn't always mean selling for millions to spend millions, sometimes it's about salaries."

You must know this geezer he is dynamite got a 1 in 3 scoring record at Boro and Celtic. Would be a top signing and a real show of intent by JB.

I think he would be my preferred choice of the rumoured targets that have been reported. Jackson was my top pick originally, I was up for Church but then went off that one.

I would take McDonald over Davies, Waghorn etc. From what I have seen he is pacy, runs the channels, plays off the shoulder of the last man and can finish, his goals to game ratio is great in Scotland and not terrible at Boro considering he was often sub.

He would be the ideal strike partner for Morison. With Keogh and Easter on the bench we would have forwards to match any other Championship team. Add the new look midfield to last season's defence and we could have a very successful season.

If this is another free transfer here's a deal for you sl marquis and woolford for wells plus 500k, my point being gets rid of dead wood in woolford and I feel wells would be a better prospect than marquis and you never now he may get 10 this season coming of the bench

I would of prefer waghorn only because i like idea of youthful striker from playing alongside the experienced strikers (i.e Moro and Keogh) it's a good combo to have but hey I'm not complaining,,I'd be delighted with McDonald haha I'm happy the xlub showing some real ambition!

I don't look too closely at scoring records for a player having been at Celtic or Rangers. Let's be honest , Marquis and Hulse would get plenty for those teams. However , I really see Mcdonald bringing good , Championship ability to this club should he come

Obviously, were we sign McDonald, and along with Bailey, Morison etc, I think our odds would tumble dramatically from our current 80/1 to win league or 22/1 to get promoted. It could be worth a punt at those odds & hope that McDonald signs cos, for me, he's the missing piece of our jigsaw that sees us having one of the strongest defences in the division, a now solid looking & hard working midfield with that touch of flair & class that an in-form Trotter provides with 3 very good strikers in Moro, Keogh & McDonald plus good back-up in all positions. The future's bright, the future's got orange hair! COYL!!

Beginning to wonder if Jacket jacked, or was helped out of the door. The board must have had these financial plans in place for a while ! Either way it's looking like progression for M.F.C.

@frank: Jackett left and the Board probably realised that they won't get his like again and that the only way the could attract the right Manager was by promising to back them financially.

Let's not forget the players Millwall already have, I am very confident that SL can bring the best out of them. Even N'Guessan is playing well and Easter showing great promise. Trotter will be back to add the creativity in midfield. SL seems to be building a very strong confident squad, it' s not about individuals but a resilient team that can come through a long tough season and building for the future on limited resources. Full marks so far.

You know optimism has overtaken sense when so many start considering N'Guessan as a useful option. Same sort of thinking as naming a best side with Abdou on the left wing.

Think he's only using n'guessan for now in case he dont get who he wants but will show him the door should he gets players he wants , probably gonna upset a few but could be abdou's lot always puts a shift in but technically poor will run his b******* all day but then so will a Labrador

No Room for sentiment if we wanna progress

Hills had us as 9/2 to finish top half on Friday if anyone's interested

@Peckhamlad: I hope he leaves and rots in the reserves of some lower league or non league team. Well paid professional footballers that think it's ok to put a sulk on in front of thousands of hardworking paying supporters deserve nothing better. He hasn't even been big enough to make a public apology.

I would prefer a young hungry striker like waghorn or davis as we need to find a gem that may earn the club a large transfer fee in the future but after so long without a 15-20 goal a season striker i'm just happy we are trying to get one to join us that is'nt rob hulse or harewood , Mcdonald has a good strike rate i'd be happy to have him ,would love billy sharp more ( can i be greedy and have both please santa ?) lol .

For so long now people have been saying on here that the club needs to invest and to show its intent. Until then they will not grace the den with their presence.

So now the club have acted more in this close season than any that I can remember, will those people confirm whether they will be attending or will it just be the same 9-10k every week?

Somehow I doubt they will bother and will come up with another excuse for staying away - oh and before u all have a go - work commitments excepted.

So now jb has put his money where his mouth is - WILL YOU?

Sure will. If we get on a roll I hope to see the gates around the 14-15k mark.
Not related, but I see that our coach of 30 days - Mick Harford, is being linked to Newcastle. A political move no doubt instigated by Kinnear to bring him in as his right hand man and that will make Pardew's position very difficult.

Makes you glad your not a Toon fan, doesn't it! We all enjoy a moan on here from time to time but thank god we support a proper club run by decent people rather the a basket-case club like Newcastle who seem like they're on a mission to alieniate as many supporters as they can.
Kinnear's appointment will end in tears and if Harford wants to be part of the seriously Barmy Army good luck to him. Mind you, they'll probably offer him an eight-year deal on £100,000 a week and then sack him after three months, so in a way I wouldn't blame him for taking it!!!!!!!

            Went down quite well really.

RE mick hartford ,bye ,hope it's worth the hassle up in loon land. I don't know if mick is any good as assistant manager or not but think he is the no nonsence sort or man we as wall fans want at the club .

Harford might well be the no nonsense sort of man we as wall fans want at the club but we also expect loyalty as well not someone who decides his future is elsewhere after just 30 days. What sort of commitment is that when he jumps ship at the first opportunity? If he goes then we are better off without him and I am sure SL will soon bring in a replacement or appoint from within the club.

Hopefully if Lomas is serious about Mc.Donald, the player may be looking at getting games under his belt in a World Cup season. The prospect of first team football with a bit lower wages, rather than being a ""bit part" player in another team may give us an edge. Get in the Aussie team and have a good World Cup and he would make even more on his next contract
