Richardson becomes latest free agent to train with Millwall

RELEASED Southampton right-back Frazer Richardson is training with Millwall as he bids to find a club ahead of the new season, NewsAtDen understands.

The 30-year-old is the latest free agent to link up with the Lions, who have already taken in the likes of Lee Croft, Lee Cook, Nicky Shorey, John Paintsil and Marlon Harewood at various stages this summer.

None of those five have been offered contracts by boss Steve Lomas and there is currently nothing to suggest that Richardson's arrangement with the Lions is anything other than for fitness purposes – but he will be hoping to earn a permanent stay in South London.

Richardson, who has previously played for Leeds United and Charlton, made five Premier League appearances for the Saints last season before being let go.

Meanwhile, ex-Middlesbrough midfielder Nicky Bailey, who has been in talks with Millwall about a move to The Den, is expected to begin training with the squad tomorrow.

@NICKOLA: Whose next on trial, Jay Simpson, Aaron McLean, Jay Bothroyd.... at this rate we could have a whole second 11 who could compete in the Championship

That'd be another good signing i'd like to see in the new line up.

@bleachy81: Liking the look of our back 4 if Richardson signs, Baily and Chaplow are good signings, hope Davis comes too. Like what Lomas is doing so far bringing in experience instead of young squad players, makes competition for places stronger.

Ok another very good solid player, but if players are going to build relationships with our new permanent players then more trialists are not the way forward.... I agree having a couple but are we likely to have the budget to sign for instance Bailey, Shorey and Richardson as well as a Striker??

Then the likes of Lowry and Dunne will have strong competition, but I can't see Lowry wanting to play second fiddle whereas Dunney will be happy to play for the team.

@TheBermondseyBomber: Lowry is good, but he isn't really a Left-Back unless we are playing a defensive formation.

By the sounds of it SL wants to play attacking football with the ball on the ground, Lowry doesn't really get forward and deliver a good ball, he also likes to hoof it up front like a Centre Back rather than playing himself out.

@Bradders: Don't think we're going to be playing any kind of tika-taka barcelona type football just yet so for me I'd prefer a more defensive full back on one side.... especially as (even with our new lads) we're not big hitters in the league - agreed Lowry isnt a natural lefty but Shittu, Robbo and Beevers are likely to have the CB places on lock down between them..... be interesting to see what SL doesn with Lowry though

@TheBermondseyBomber: Your right we're not Barcelona, but all round Shorey is a better defender, can pass the ball, can knock it long if needs to, can head it and deliver a ball when asked to go forward and has plied his trade as a left back.

Then it gives Jake Goodman a chance as he can play left back and Centre back like Lowry and SL has said he wants to use the youngsters.

Speaking as a Southampton fan you've got a great signing in Chaplow already (but you probably already knew that). When we went up from the Championship Richardson was outstanding for us, great going forward, think he had over 10 assists from right back - if he can get back to match fitness you'll have a great player.

I understand that SL has not made his mind up yet about any of the trialists, perhaps he is waiting to see them play on Sat if they are still in the frame. I would rather would spend some money on a decent forward.

Not sure how to call this one. What is best , a footballing right/left back like Adam Smith ? Or , a tackling man marker like Shane Lowry ? I suppose the answer lies with the style of play SL wants to employ.......time will tell

Got a mate who is a season ticket holder at Brighton,he doesn't rate Dicker very highly, says he loses the ball quite a bit and is a bit slow! Should fit in with Trotter then!8)

@lion01: Season ticket holder at Brighton eh? Most likely means he's only been going to their games for 2 years and before that he was a Chelsea supporter wearing his replica shirt down the on on Sundays. Never have I seen such an explosion of replica shirts and "lifelong fans" as Brighton's and I should know because I live amongst the t******. For most of them (their hardcore excepted and much the same as ours) any player with a name like Dicker would be a cult hero as he'd reflect their lifestyle. Funny how all these fools "don't rate" a player the moment he looks like moving on.

I think the players brought in already will improve the squad, I hope there is more to just giving these players a run out as I think signing 1 or 2 would stand us in a good position for a top 8 finish. Think we had a good defence last year but started to struggle when the goals dried up (woods leaving) so def hoping for Moro and co to come good

We may well end up with a proper championship squad next season if stevie lo can tie a couple of these trialists down on contracts. I'd take shorey, croft, and Richardson providing alls ok, add them to bailey, chaplow, Martin and Morison all at no transfer cost then things will be looking very rosy indeed. Don't know about you guys but I'm very happy with the new regime and how they wish to do their business. Most certainly have my full backing and fully deserved so far.
Liking your work stevie lo. Keep it up.
Now we can buy a decent striker rather than borrow a has been or inexperienced kid.

There is going to be some very stiff competition next season with the likes of QPR, Wigan, Birmingham Reading, Bolton etc. So a strong squad is vital. I like to see another good striker bought, not on loan. Perhaps from abroad?

what amazes me is that whenever we are wanting to sign a player we go and tell the world abt it before we have signed them kj was king at that. sky text running a report with sl stating his unsure about all the triallists and blames them for brentford loss. shorey a must richardson a must but dnt let other clubs know what we doing till its done, thats why wood is at leicester.

If we get anymore bodies in, we may blow the budget having to extend the training ground.

What it does show is the amount of bloated squads out there, none of these players would be bad additions but beware of falling onto the Jackett trap of having two players of just about OK quality rather than a shoe in and a kid.

Too many trialists coming in don't help team morale in my book. We very rarely keep any of them as they're low on quality (thats why no-one wants them, Brentford game!?) so the club targeting who they really want is the way to go. Good sides need to gel before the season kicks off, how can that be done with 8-9 trialists swilling around. Look at Jack Smith's comments, he said as much. Wongo makes a good point, don't want too much dead wood, quality rather than quantity Steve.

Another striker is a must (Davies, Waghorn, McDonald or Church) plus Bailey in midfield. If there is still money left in the kitty after that then Shorey and Richardson might be worth signing as full back cover. I would be happy to start the season with that squad and SL might be able to make further additions if he can offload any of the deadwood before their contracts expire.

Decent right back and dare i say it...better both defensively and offensive than Dunney(Sorry Dunney). But if we are going to move on there is little room for sentiment. Our one club men need to step it up this year and show SL that they can compete at this level and take us forward or they will be moved on if they are not happy to be squad players. Hasn't Dunne just signed a new contract?

I think Pantsil has had he's chance and he will be off hence the reason for Richardson joining us on trial, same for Cook & Harewood. Shorey & Croft will be given longer and will probably feature again this weekend.

Going tomorrow so looking forward to seeing for myself how the team is doing and witnessing SL in the dugout..COYL!!!!
