Ex-Barnsley striker Marlon Harewood training with Millwall

© Actionplus
© Actionplus

MARLON Harewood is training with Millwall for the next three days – but there have been no concrete discussions about offering the striker a contract.

Harewood, who left Barnsley at the end of last season, is wanted by Bristol City and Ashton Gate remains his likeliest destination, unless the Lions put a deal on the table.

The 33-year-old's family live in London so moving to The Den is an attractive proposition.

But Steve Lomas has yet to indicate that he wants to sign Harewood on a free transfer, despite allowing him to train with Millwall's squad this week.

    Decent goalscorer though not prolific.

Would be a good addition to the squad.

Some people really need to seek help regarding their hatred of all things West Ham.

@SE16 Wall: I'm not a lover of our east London neighbours and frankly in my opinion if they ceased to exist the world would be a better place BUT in this case I think its more about the player not being able to hit a cows @rse with a banjo that's putting most of us off!

        Nottingham Forest: 51 goals in 124 (57)
        West Ham: 47 goals in 123 (19)
        Newcastle: 5 goals in 9 (6)
        Blackpool: 5 goals in 7 (9)

Stop repeating as fact something that is made up by people who talk and think rubbish. The man is, as I said, a proven goalscorer.

@SE16 Wall: I'm guessing you were one of the jokers backing Rob Hulse last season - this fool is 33 and I agree a proven goalscrer 7-10 years ago now he's the wrong side of 30 got 2 goals in 32 for Barnsley (in our league) so I rest my case -and FYI this stat IS NOT made up by anyone who may think or talk "rubbish" its fact and personally I think DNG would get more than 1 goal every 16 games!!

As it happens the records at Blackpool and Newcastle were under 4 years each but why let facts get in the way of a good moan, eh?

Barnsley, like ourselves, were struggling against relegation last season and, that suggests, tha tthe whole team struggled and under-performed. Andy Keogh scored 6 goals, for example, but I suppose now that you know that you'll be booing him from now?

As for Hulse the man was worth bringing in but it didn't work out so he left. What else is there to say? Unless, of course, you think the club knew in advance it wouldn't work out???

Harewood's history shows he is worth taking a punt on as well.

@TheBermondseyBomber: Well said, Harewood's wages would not be worth the punt.... I think a young goalscorer from either the conference of League 1 would be worth a punt as the fee would be minimal, wages wouldn't be much (especially compared to Harewood).

Last season we struggled to score goals as we had 2 guys who were more ball winners and didn't have a quick lad (until Afobe arrived... and then got injured), which was our downfall, we need a guy with pace and Harewood is not that!!

@SE16 Wall: Still not good enough for me my man. He may of had spells over his career that could be construed as proven but the last 3 - 4 season he just hasn't cut the mustard. He has been signing little 6 month contracts here there and everywhere and non of them have taken the option to extend.... League 1 is the best he can hope for. If i'm wrong and he comes in and out scores any of main strikers i will dance a jig down the Old Kent Rd naked with a empty packet of walkers between me bum cheeks.....

Are you Harewoods agent by any chance????

I was well aware of Keoghs stats for last season before you mentioned it (but thanks anyway) difference in the 2 players makes comparison rather pointless - Keogh is a good age, hungry, energetic and on his day he can finish Harewood is old, past it and fat!

Hulse wasnt worth bringing in.... not ever! his 1 goal a month for Charlton was enough to show us all that!!

@SE16 Wall: I agree absolutely if he is signed he would make a great target man, strong and knows where the goal is. Morrison would have pressure taken off him to find space. It isrubbish about being the wrong side of 30, it has not stopped Ryan Giggs who is 39! Harewoods valuable experience would help the side enormously. It is going to be a tough season and there are some formidable opponents we need all the strength we can get. SL must be allowed to build the side he wants. Sit back and enjoy.

I'd take Harewood as a back-up to Morison, Keogh and one of the other strikers we've been linked with (Waghorn/Davies/Church). But if we were to sign him INSTEAD OF of one those I mentioned it would be a big disappointment

Nooo he is well by his sell by date nearly 34 years old, not a prolific goal scorer either 127 in 468 games a goal nearly every fourth game, if thats what they are looking fo then why notr get Bomber back in training.
This would be dissapointing after the talk of Waghorn and others please who may be coming to the Den. SL tell us you are just helping an old mate keep fit so he can go to a div 1 or conference side.

Now that Jackson has gone to Germany I haven't seen one hungry, proven and decent striker linked with us. It's all second/third/last chance hopers and has beens. If we are serious about progressing we need to cherry pick a striker and pay the going rate. If, as has been rumoured, we ONLY have a million to spend on a striker, we need to go young and down the league or look for another Harry Kane/Chris Wood on a year loan with first option on permanent deal.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I find some of the ageism on here quite astonishing.
Harewood's spell training with us will quickly establish whether he's a 'fat', 'mediocre journeyman', who's only looking for a 'pension' and couldn't 'hit a cat's @rse with a banjo' (why would you want to hit a cow's @rse with a banjo?'
If SL decides Harewood's still got something to offer the best he'll get is a short-term contract on moderate wages, if not he'll be setting the sat nave for Bristol.
Those people who write him off just because of his age should take a long hard look at the squads of all the sides who were successful in the Championship and League One last season. The one thing they've all got in common is a good mix of youth and experience - Kevin Phillips scored a handful of goals for Palace last season including their play-off final winner and they had three or four over 30s in their side most weeks
We've bumped up the pay structure to sign some decent, experienced players and I fully expect SL to sign a young striker either permanently or on loan before the transfer window closes.
    Lonz, 33 and a half!!!

@Lonz: Difference between him and Phillips is goals. Phillips, even at the age he's at scores. 280 goals in 641 games is an amazing record whereas Harewood has scored 139 in 470. I don't care about age (I'm 37 by the way) but I don't want someone who's going to take up potential game time from a younger player who needs the minutes on the field to aid their development. We've been there and done it with has beens, that's sooo last season. If it were Phillips though, I'd take him in a flash. The Hulse, Tyson and Harewood types can jog on to League 1 or 2.

Sorry Lonz but this guy has had a real bad 3 or 4 seasons now (which is facts due to his stats for assists and goals scored), whereas Kevin Phillips can play a 20minute cameo and score you a goal.

It doesn't matter how old you are as long as you can score goals.... that's what a Striker is paid to do and that is what Phillips does and Harewood doesn't.

Age does come into it as we don't have a decent young striker who has something to prove.... Harewood has earnt his Millions so doesn't have anything to prove anymore!!

I'd certainly have Chris Wood back even though his Messiah status with some people on here is laughable! He did well for us and scored a stack of goals during his first few weeks with Leicester, but by the end of the season he wasn't even a regular in their side.
Personally I don't think there's a cat in hell's chance of him coming back. Harry Kane's a far more realistic possibility, but only if Spurs decide to sell him because they don't like their players having extended loan spells at the same club.
Scott McDonald's a finisher who might work well with Morison, but he'd be pricey and people who think there's a million quid in a drawer at the Den for Lomas to spend are hopelessly naive.
Wages and transfer fees all come out of the same pot and we've already significantly increased the wage bill. If we can unload a few maybe Lomas will be able to spend, but it doesn't seem as though anyone is beating down the door to sign any of our squad players.

The point is that 5 players have already gone and only 4 have come in. There's others going out ( I hope) and more to come in. The budget is unknown but Berylson is on record as saying he'll support Lomas with funds. Lomas has been prudent with the cash so far, one year deal for Martin, Leeds paying half of Morison's wages and the other 'ins' have been out of contract players. I don't think our new goalie is earning the combined wages of Maik Taylor and Mildenhall nor more than Martin is getting the same as Batt and Racon combined for example. Chaplow didn't come cheap but he's a solid investment. A new striker, midfielder required and the funds will be available for them.

@NICKOLA: There's only one player I really want to see go and that's DNG. I hope he ends up sulking after being kicked up in the air by a non-league centre half every week after 90 minutes. Everybody else deserves to have Lomas make his own mind up about them. I too believe that JB is ready to back the new manager but I think the real investment will be if and when we are around the top six in December/January, although I'm happy to be proved completely wrong by 3rd August. Not jumping through hoops yet but there's definitely an air of optimism around the club.

If Harewood's likiliest destination is Ashton Gate then why isn't he training with them then ?
I've got no problem with having a few players like Shorey, Croft etc participating in the training because as Lomas has said, it's a win win situation for all concerned, and no doubt they all add something to the training regimen and input some frash banter. The problem now, is that due to excellent sites- like this one in particular- is that very little gets under the radar. No doubt in the past such players have joined training or we've had 'trialists' that are never heard of again but if an ant creeps onto the scene we now hear about it. What is going to be interesting is whether these players, and Harewood especially, are in the squad tonight.

Let Harewood go to Ashton Gate and put in a bid for Steve Davies from Bristol City instead. He has a reasonable goal scoring record(13 goals last season for a relegated club) and is in his mid twenties. That would be a main strike force of Morison ,Keogh, Davies and Easter with Marquis and N'Guessan as last resort backups if any of them get injured. A much stronger set of strikers than we have had for years.

@Nikola where did you read we are only paying half of Morison's wages? I've heard from various places we are either paying all of it, 75% of it or above... now it's 50%, so it seems nobody knows and even if you do find, what is SL's budget.... again we don't know.

We can be sure Chaplow is on a rake but a very good signing..... Racon, Makandawire, Mildenhall, Batt, Maik Taylor and Chris Taylor's wages would possibly cover Chaplow's and Bywaters but that would be it.

Great signings so far, but they all come out of the budget even if they are on a free. We can give more in wages because we aren't paying a fee for these guys.

@Bradders: Chris Taylor was on surprisingly high wages as was Batt and Racon considering their ability - The biggest travesty is the £5k the club pay DNG a week.... I also heard via my job that we're only in for half of Moro's wage so approx £6k

I am enjoying what we have trust me.
A new striker and midfielder coming in this week. We'll see who's right soon enough.

@NICKOLA: Nobody is saying you are wrong about signing more players..... I'm sure we will but IMHO you do keep going on about the amount of players we have let go and the amount we have brought in whereas that has no real relevance because each players wages are different.

The guys we have let go are on pittance compared to Chaplow, Morison and Martin.

Where did you see we are only paying 50% of Morison's wages???

Isit really about who's right or wrong? It's all about opinions. I see it clearly means a lot to you though. I would also like a midfielder and striker, however I think we will only get one established player in either position, probably get a decent centre mid. I dont know if I'll ever see us spend decent cash on a player, but to be fair I'm very pleased with the way lomas has gone about it so far. You don't always have to spend a lot to be successful.

Would be a poor signing but IMHO he is a better player than DNG and Jermaine Easter with the added bonus of much more experience at a higher level.

Gotta stand up for Easter here, he did alright for us last year, the games I saw he showed real class and in a more attcaking formation I reckon he has goals in him. @Chipplefuddywick:

I agree with the majority. Marlon Harewood IS past it and his wages would prevent other (actual professional footballers) joining. But I am not concerned as I honestly believe as it says in the report that he lives in London and is purely training with a local team!!

@frank: Au contraire, big, ugly and works his nuts off for his team, just our type. However, in the twilight of his declining career, so not for me.

There is no way any compare ryan giggs or kevin phillips to marlon harewood two totally different league of player just because he has premier league experience doesnt mean he better than what we have already got i dont see any other clubs jumping to sign him other than league one, last year every man and his dog that was connected to millwall moaned when we signed over 30s (hulse tyson and easter) so why are we now resorting back to even considering this idea! If harewood even is allowed to play for us like more over 30s like pnastill and shorey are then there will be a lot of unhappy people and a lot of views vented towards him

I hope this is just a training thing , maybe just maybe he might add a little but would take a lot out in wages I would rather the money was invested in a Tom pope or equivalent, yes Chaplow is probably on about 10k but agree with Nickola that a fair chunk of wages off the wage bill still freeing up money there and transfer money untouched if as alledged 1.5 mill still available from wood and money from cup run then I reckon 2/2.5 million plus money from jackett compo

I reckon the ones that have gone have saved 25 grand a week off bill (including hendersons alledged 15k a week in that too ) maybe even more and tucking Leeds up for some of morisons wages was inspired

Jonathan Obika anybody? Was on loan for a short spell a few seasons back. Top scorer in Premier League U21's last year with 15 but 22yo now. Just signed a years extension with Spurs so they must rate him and he's playing in their pre-season friendly tonight. Could be a good loan signing with view to permanent. Been keeping tabs on Patrick Bamford at Chelsea as well but he's gone back to MK Dons on a season long loan. There must be some nuggets in that U21 league that would be better short term loan deals than the likes of Harewood.

@lion.ie: can think of midfielders and defenders but its a bit of a challenge finding a striker that a club wont want to keep hold of he is that decent

@lion.ie: Not for me. I would prefer to blood Fred Onyedinma this early as Palace tend to do. If he is as good as reports and PL teams interest suggests then I would rather expose this lad (even if its premature) before he becomes another Samba,Ashikodi,Wilkinson we never even see.

Absolutely no no no no no no no no no no and no.
Happy to let people get fit for a couple weeks as there's no harm in that what so ever but I'd rather give marquis the chance to see if he can finally cut it as I think given the chance his goal return will be no worse than MHs.
Not a fan and never have been.
