Croft, Shorey and Paintsil in Millwall squad for Crawley trip

STEVE Lomas has named Lee Croft, Nicky Shorey and John Paintsil in his squad for Millwall's first pre-season friendly of the summer against Crawley Town.

The trio of free agents are currently training with the Lions and whilst Lomas insists they are not on trial, they will all travel to Broadfield Stadium on Saturday.

Shane Lowry and Andy Keogh are notable absentees from the squad. Millwall are expected to field completely different sides in each half.

Speaking ahead of the game, Lomas told the club's official site: : "I'm looking forward to it. Obviously we've had a couple of weeks of breaking the boys in, but the games start now and that's another step towards match fitness.

"You want pre-season matches to be competitive, that's how you get up the level. All the teams we are going to play in pre-season are going to be decent."

Millwall squad: David Forde, Stephen Bywater, Alan Dunne, John Paintsil, Danny Shittu, Paul Robinson, Karleigh Osborne, Mark Beevers, Scott Malone, Nicky Shorey, James Henry, Liam Feeney, Jimmy Abdou, Jack Smith, Martyn Woolford, Lee Croft, Lee Martin, Josh Wright, John Marquis, Jermaine Easter, Steve Morison, Dany N’Guessan.

Wonder why Lowry and Keogh aren't in the squad? Hope the Lowry transfer rumours aren't true!!

Keogh is a week behind the others regarding match fitness. Don't know about Lowry.
I must say that looking at the squad as a whole, there is a lot of deadwood in there.

@NICKOLA: Apart from martin and henry id consider the whole midfield to be dead wood, complete lack of centre midfielders that are actually championship level, no doubt we'd be a great league one team, as exciting as the Lomas revolution has been and I for one can see us doing quite well this season, I cant help but look at our squad and think what a pile of SH*T, without keogh and morro the frontline might as well be pub team

@NICKOLA: Doesnt really install much confidence, but as alot of people have pointed out, its going to take two years minimum to get a competitive team together that will be SL's own team, just have to sit tight for another year and see what happens, SL wont be working miracles in his first season

22 players in that squad with 2 different teams to play in each half. So, they're all going to get 45 mins each. Hopefully, that will be the last 45 mins we'll ever see of some of them again.

Too right ! Bit early to be slagging off team selection, or have I missed something the last 45 years ?

@Kennyp, I hope he hasn't choose to bring Lowry because he knows he will probably be 1st choice for next season and wants to give the trialist

Heavens give these guys a break, the season has not even begun yet and some are moaning! It will take time for SL to bed in he has to see for himself and ignore all the armchair managers out there. I am very optimistic and lets not prejudge anything until the season is under way. Forget the past MFC now has a new manager and a fresh start. I am sure SL knows what he is doing.

I can't believe how shoddy our strike force is. Without Morison that squad couldn't bag a dozen goals between them.

@Sidcup_Lad: Absolutely agree Sidcup, Desperately need another goal getter. Only 3 weeks to kick off, need to get the players in required as they will not have long to gel/acquainted to the Walls ethos.

Why are people moning? I know its an awful squad but Its pre-season away to crawley fair enough if it was our starting squad against yeovil for the first game i'd be complaining too. Just give Lomas a bit more time to finalise some other transfers (chaplow, waghorn, etc.) to complete the squad

Croft and Shorey especially would be good signings. Please not Pantsil he's pants. Osborne will become a very decent centre half so don't knock him. By all accounts Chaplow is signing a two year deal (touch wood) and the Bailey thing is possibly still alive. Another striker is a distinct possibility and either Davies or Waghorn would do nicely. Don't think Lowry will be going anywhere. If all that lot comes together it will be (on paper) the best squad at this club for many years.

@Old_Les: Osbourne is good cover as long as SL NEVER uses him at full back.

@lion.ie: I may be wrong but I think that SL is pretty astute and with the re-inforced squad I think that the players will be played in their strongest positions unless injury/suspensions force a change. He seems to know what makes people tick.

Why is it an awful squad? This is the team as it is at present all these guys are on wages apart from the trialists etc. They have to earn their crust like anyone else. Obviously SL is goin g to have a good look at them all for the first time in a competitiive game (despite the opposition) first to get his team match fit and then to see where the weaknesses and strengths are. No doubt he might want to try a different formation. With a few more additions and definitely another forward I hope that they all come good, if they don't then changes have to happen. For now I am going to get behind the manager, team and club I love.

Lowry, Trotter and Keogh are missing. These 3 plus another midfielder (Chaplow?) and striker would totally change the look of the squad, as hopefully that would be an additional 5 Championship standard players. Shame Shorey is 32 as he would be decent cover for Lowry but at his age he would be looking for 1st team football.

@conor: You never know, most of the players we have been reported as interested in we have not got but the ones we have have been a bit off the radar so who knows with Chaplows influence perhaps there is a chance for Sharp. Here's hoping.

i live near the millwall training ground, at 2.15 pm today richard chaplow was having a medical with the physio, he shook everybodys hand, looks like he needs some fitness training before he`s match fit, great too see him tho, just a left back, a striker needed now.

Could the reason for Keogh and Lowry missing this game be that they are well known as quality to the manager and he is more interested in trialing their cover tomorrow?
