Chaplow's Southampton deal cancelled by mutual consent

SOUTHAMPTON have cancelled Richard Chaplow's contract by mutual consent – clearing the way for the midfielder to sign for Millwall on a free transfer.

Chaplow tweeted earlier on Thursday that he was still "very much" a Saints player after talks over a severance package hit a snag, but the 28-year-old is now officially a free agent.

The Lions are expected to sign Chaplow on a two-year contract within the next 24 hours.

Southampton confirmed in a statement: "With first-team opportunities looking slim ahead of the 2013-14 season, Chaplow has been permitted to end his three-year association with Southampton."

Chaplow, who scored nine goals in 67 appearances for the south-coast club, tweeted: "End of a chapter, start of a new one! Loved every min and I'm privileged to have been part of it all, what a journey it was."

"Fans have been amazing can't even sum up in a tweet how much I'll miss the whole club."

@Barnlion: I have to agree with you, it's all very up in the air and I don't believe a word that anyone says unless he has actually signed a contract otherwise it's all hearsay (and I don't mean that rubbish group from pop idols).

@James Porter: I don't think it was a problem about being under contract, the Manager already said Chaplow was FREE to leave, but it was down to severance pay which Chaplow either accepts or rots in the Reserves for a year....

    Well done mr Aldridge
For those finding it hard to understand
Please (not taking the p*** out of you's) read the articles properly. It's all sorted he's had his medical and had his agent sort the severance issues out he probably got told by his agent saints are playing hard ball cause he chose to get the medical out the way before they agreed anything with him. He's ours be happy
    Now for the next one.

@lukesmithmfc: Thanks for clarifying what we already knew Luke, well done. If you are on Twitter you might have seen Richard Chaplow coming out to say he is still a Southampton player as they could not agree the severance package.... if this couldn't be agreed upon he would have ended up staying at Southampton whether he agreed terms, passed a medical or climbed Everest....

So it's quite easy to understand, thanks Luke

When settling a severance package I would imagine he would need to be showing commitment to his employer or they might have had justification for paying him less. I am no expert but I guess that is the case.

Sorry but I am still confused in my old age. Where does it state that he is now officially a Millwall player? Wilkpedia is usually on the ball but they are stating that he is a free agent.

The earlier statement on this site was that following successful talks he had verbally agreed a 2 year contract and was due to have a medical today. Yet the Millwall Official Site states that talks are ongoing which would indicate that nothing had yet been agreed. Surely this means that other clubs still have a chance of stepping in with a better offer? I have visions of us being gazumped at the last minute like we have been with players in the past.

Speaks volumes about our new coaching team that these players want to train with us, whatever the reason behind it, whether they sign for us or not. The fact that Chaplow wants to sign for us - I know it's early days but SL, NH, MH and JB seem to be going the right way about winning over the doubters. I was a big supporter of KJ and will always be grateful for what he did for Millwall but so far SL has definitely given us supporters plenty of reasons to get excited about the season ahead!

Quotes from Chaplow's agent tonight saying other clubs were interested in him but that he enjoyed his time at Millwall and was touched by messages of support from the club and supporters when his baby died.

According to the Daily Mirror Millwall are "closing on Marlon Harewood and Richard Chaplow".
We know about Chaplow but is it true about Harewood? He is a strong and big striker also wanted by Bristol City.

News At Den, After yesterday today seems boring is there no news on Chaplow, Waghorn coming in or any news on players we could say goodby too. Maybe they are getting ready for the Crawley Town game tomorrow.
After all the activity yesteday I would have thought there would be conformation of someone signing for us looks like we will have to wait to see if we are going to have a decent next season.

And yea, I say unto you all, Lomas has been sent to the Den to bring happiness to all.
And yea, a time will come when DNG, Woolford and Osborne will be cast out.
A new dawn will see you blessed with new players.
        Go in peace.

Let Bristol City have Marlon Harewood and we'll sign Steve Davies from them instead, We'll even give them back Woolford in part exchange and throw in N'Guessan for nothing as part of the deal!!!

@denslions: Harewood has the Premiership experience and over 60 goals scored in the top flight. If you had a choice between N'Guessan and Harewood I think there is no contest (but you never know what miracles SL can perform!) Anyway this is becoming boring as like everyone else am becoming frustrated at lack of any positive news, except just bought my Robbo testimonial ticket.
